My primary issue with this design is the fork and knife, both of which just look like they were pasted onto the Snorlax; that is, there is no apparent thumb or anything to reasonably show that is is holding the utensils.

I think the Oompa Loompa one does, but I'm a pretty big LOTR geek and I don't know of any natural connection between Sam & tanning, so he doesn't seem like a natural choice for showing the consequences of over-tanning.

It is likely too rough to tell right now, but it's an oompa loompa passed out on syrup and candy. It somehow feels wrong...

The other idea I had was Frodo Baggins after a spray tan...it turns his hair green as well. Not sure how to show that one. Any thought or feedback is MUCH appreciated.

I think that making Gollum the tan one would make more sense...but then no hair, so not really going to look like an oompa loompa.

Comments? Might this run afoul of the woot censors on alcohol designs? The design is called "Appletini overindulgence"

The appletini title might hasten its rejection. I like the design and the thin sponge.

Maybe have the glass tipped over and the title Five O'clock Accident or a bottle instead is the martini glass.

I wish the Woot overlords would chime in on this.

Anyone else seeing the vote count for 8th and 9th place on the derby page? Shows them in the fog, but with the number instead of the question mark.

Edit: 7th, 8th and 9th.

And oy, terrapin overload.

As am I.

As for the turtles, I wish I could say I was surprised.

That being said, I already see at least 4 Mario entries. Just bringing us one step further to a video game ban on a more regular basis. That being said, I wouldn't mind seeing a few Metroid entries (as I already see one).

We (Barbara and I switch off on derby duties although many probably don't realize it) typically get annoyed on Mon. or Tues. when we start getting the files together for print and find most of the entries in the fog don't have accompanying print-files.

One of us was recently so peeved by this that they were very close to rejecting all of those fogged entries last Monday, but the other was all "Wait, wait, don't be hasty. While you're 100% right, surely we can talk to them about it and make them see the light." So those lucky artists got a reprieve. For now. How long before the "nuclear option" is back on the table is anyone's guess.

It's also an issue when, like today, we need to see if a design is actually printable but we don't have a print-file to go with it. That only hurts the artist, as by the time they get the file to us and we have to reject it, it may be too far into the derby to get a printable re-sub in. Sucks for the them.

-cries- I think I'm probably one of the ones to blame for the nuclear threat. I chalk it up to my own lack of confidence in my designs. I always think they wont do well, so I usually dont ready the print file quick enough. Last derby was, errr, especially bad about that. It was quite an adventure once I realized what I'd done... So sorry! m(-_-)m

I hate not being good at designing stuff. My drawings and designs look crappy, but I have a couple ideas if anyone cares to elaborate... seems like almost everybody is doing food, so I've got a couple different things based on my own experience in over indulging.

1) Dog playing with WAAAAY too many squeaky toys. (If it's a Scottie, I would love you forever)

2) Person/Character buried under piles of bags from different stores. (My Black Friday experience!)

3) Person/Character wrapped like a mummy in receipts and some credit cards tossed around the floor.

Please message me if you decide to use any of these!

speaking for those of us who mostly struggle to get over 100 votes, i'd like to whack you with a cattle prod.

as for sending the print ready in - although i don't enter the derby that much any more, in the past i used to upload the print ready with the comp and detail pics. when that button stopped working on the entry form, i stopped sending it in. if it was really a priority, they woulda made the "submit print-ready" button work. or so i figgered.

Yawn.

Time to ban pop culture again.

For the love of god. Type "mario shirt" into Google and see what you get. The answer is "THERE ARE ALREADY THOUSANDS OF MARIO SHIRTS; BUY ONE OF THEM INSTEAD."

SkekTek

No kidding. I waste time working on a design that I think is really different, and it's being forgotten in a sea of Mario.

I don't think there should be a pop culture ban, though, since that's hard to define. Better to use the "no gaming" ban, since that would take out all the Nintendo, Pokemon, and Arcade junk.

And on the topic of print-ready files, I haven't sent in one since they took it off the page to submit. If I ever get >100 votes or get an HM, then I'll send one in via email. If not, I'm not gonna bother. Why clog woot's emails up with files and templates that will never be used?

Agreed. The thing I've noticed is that without at least a couple regulations, it ends up being pop-culture overload ... like this time. Once again, I unvoted several of them.

Yes, but I don't seem to see Pratchett characters anywhere (He is still alive and don't know what that reaction would be, either). I would totally buy a shirt with Vimes casually feeding charcoal to his wife's little pets

This is the thing about pop cult. Many in the community get tired of seeing it, but that's because we're used to seeing these typs of designs all the time. People still really like them and want to buy them.

In derbies where pop cult is allowed, I'd encourage artists to give it a shot. Personally, I dislike most of the typical pop themes. The way I think about it is, what kind of Mario shirt would *I* actually like to wear? Then I'll try and draw that version. It's kind of a good way to have fun, and still compete without feeling as dirty ^^;. Turn it upon it's head I say!

Just my two silly cents.
