Shirt.Woot

I decided to steer clear of the women's shirts after reading about others' experiences and after a friend found a WM, which should have fit her, to be far too big.

I have been most comfortable in MM in the past, so I ordered a MM of "It's Alive!", the first shirt printed on Anvil that caught my interest.

I put it on out of the package, and I have mixed feelings. The fabric is noticeably different from the AA blanks - it had a stiffness to it that they never did, and it seemed to want to stick to itself slightly as I loosened it up to try it on. However, compared to t-shirts in general, I would say it is a decent, rather soft shirt.

The sizing seems a bit smaller than the old MM - this shirt fits a bit snug in the hips. I'd say it fits the way the old MMs did after they were washed and tumble dried. If I wash this and dry it flat, I think it will be okay; if it loses any size, then it will be an issue. I'm bothered by that, as the dimensions are supposed to be the same as on the old shirts, other than length. (I have no problem with the length; this shirt is plenty long.) So as long as I can keep it from shrinking, I think it will work okay.

The real issue I have is that it has a strange smell. I recall that someone else posted about their shirt having an odd chemical smell. I've always worn Woot shirts out of the bag, but I had to take this off after trying it on briefly. It will need a wash before I feel like it's clean and safe to wear; I've never had any such issue with anything from Woot.

So I'm not sure what to think. I don't want to give up on Woot; I've been trying to stay as positive and open-minded as I can. I've read a lot of posts, and I'll admit, I've been growing more jaded the more I read. I'm glad to find that apparently I can wear the new MM (or maybe the ML, once I shrink it in the wash). However, I'm also a little turned off the sizing issues and a lot turned off by this weird chemical thing.

So I think the next thing I'll do is see how this shirt weathers the washing machine and some wear before I come to a final opinion about the Anvil shirts.

I appreciate everyone's posting and feedback and advice on what to watch out for. I hope my post helps with the dialogue.

I find this to be my biggest gripe with the new Anvil blanks - the stiffness of the fabric. I could put up with the tent-like fit of the shirts if they were just softer. I kind of feel like I'm wearing a cardboard box when I put them on.

I'm pretty much in the same boat. The fit was alright I guess - although I've only washed mine once so far - but to me the material just feels so cheap. If I wanted cheap scratchy shirts, I'd get free ones from work!

This may be more of an overall Woot thing than an Anvil thing. (Perhaps the naughty Woot monkeys have been setting of stink bombs in the warehouses?) I received an AA shirt last week and also noted it had an unusual/unpleasant odour; it went straight from the package to the laundry pile.

I have always washed my shirts before wearing them for the first time, it just seems like the sensible thing to do. You guys who wear them right away need more patience perhaps.. :P

I'm afraid I have no input on anvil shirt quality after several washes, I seem to have lost the green sample shirt Woot sent me.

Maybe my subconscious made it vanish to spare my feelings..

I am a HUGE T-Shirt buyer, I have 6 sites I check daily (and I buy minimum 1-3 a week), but WOOT was my first shirt site and the one I am (OR WAS) most committed to. I have told hundreds of people about WOOT, and especially shirt.woot, but no more.

I am an even bigger fan of FELLOW AMERICANS, and WOOT has just betrayed American workers and put more Americans out of jobs. I don’t care if they treat their Honduran workers well, I want to support AMERICAN workers, let Hondurans worry about Hondurans. This is a slap in the face to every WOOT customer, and to American workers. I can assure you I will be telling everyone I turned onto WOOT about their betrayal. By the way, I have bought 135 different woot shirts, sometimes 2 and 3 of each, so I am a good customer. I am now removing Shirt.WOOT from my daily T-Shirt sites to check, and I will not be checking woot.com either, where I have also purchased many items. Woot betrays my country, I dump woot….simply story, sad end. Feel free to let me know if you reverse you decision to betray American workers and maybe I will stop back again, until then I still have PLENTY of shirt sites to visit.

Right, my Anvil review to date. Have bought 3 so far and yes, the cut is a little more square (boxier makes it sound cardboard and I am not noticing a fabric difference). The more square cut and broader shoulders actually made me purchase a size down on the last one (from Mens 2XL to XL), and pre cold wash and hang dry, the shoulders seem to suit. Still too early for the long wearing test, although I've got Firefrogh's Not Like The Others on and after a couple of trips out into the universe and through the wash, it's still fine and funny.

There is now a facebook support group, grief counslers on hand M-F from the hours of 8:30-8:31, to help you cope with losing AA blanks. Please search facebook for woot. Remember time heals all pain!

Well I got my first Anvil shirts just the other day (the kitty shirts!) and for the sake of, oh let's say experimentation, I had gotten one as ML and another as WL (as I had previously worn WXL and knew to go down a size).

My overall assessment is while they aren't bad shirts, they aren't as nice as the AA shirts. While I most likely won't stop buying Anvil shirts, I'll be more discretionary with what designs I get - especially with the price increase.

And here are some additional comments on the shirts, which I tried on without washing.

Fabric: The fabric of both shirts, as noted by others, is stiffer and I would say slightly coarser than the AA shirts. I much prefer the fabric of the AA shirts, but the Anvil shirts aren't bad. I probably wouldn't have noticed if I wasn't comparing directly to the AA shirts.

Seams: It may just be me, but the seam stitching around the top is very noticeable. It's the style of Anvil shirts, I'm sure, just something interesting.

ML Fit: It seemed a little smaller and tighter than the AA shirts. If it doesn't shrink much in the wash (which apparently it won't?) it will still fit fine, but I could see myself going up to a MXL to get a baggier fit.

WL Fit: Well, I must be one of the few women who doesn't really mind the women's shirt fit. But that's probably because I like wearing men's shirts, and not having the fabric hug my body. Because the women's shirt will likely never hug my stomach the way AA shirts do. I hear tell that's the style nowadays, so I completely understand why it's upsetting to a lot of the people who are looking for that style they used to wear. However, there are still a few things with the fit that are a bit odd. The shoulders are a little wide for me, so the seam on the shoulder puff up , especially when I lift my arms some. It looks like I have puffy shoulders, which is to say, hilarious. The sleeves are longer than the AA ones, which I don't mind too much. And the bottom 'hip' part chills out away from my body, as others have mentioned. However it's only an inch or so away on each side, so it doesn't look that bad. I'll see if washing affects the shape of this shirt much, such as fixing the shoulder issue. If not, I may try a WM shirt and see how that one fits.

The change in shirt blanks was completely unexpected for me and no, I never saw an adequate warning about this, nor did I know about the change before I regrettably bought two of the latest shirts in the size I had been accustomed to in AA. Not cool Woot, not cool.

There IS a change in quality and it IS obvious and DOES make a huge difference in sizing and fit. I'm dumbfounded that more people aren't hollering louder about this. From what I can gather, the difference appears to be more of an issue in the women's sizes. For me personally, the instant I opened the bag I knew something was off, even sight unseen. The moment my fingers touched the lower quality material, my brain went "Huh? This doesn't feel like a Woot!" and then it all went downhill from there. Unfolding the shirt and holding it up was all I needed to know that it wasn't going to fit. I thought at first that it was a mistake and had been sent the wrong size, but when I checked the tag I realized that it looked altogether different... that's when I realized this was NOT an American Apparel shirt. And I felt betrayed, silly but true. Not only is the shirt way too big but the cut is unflattering. It hangs like a box and there is at least two inches of extra fabric on either side of my waist and the sleeves gap and stick out because my arms don't even come close to filling the space.

I'm stuck with what would've been two of the best shirts EVER, only now, because they hang on me like a fabric box, they will likely serve at best as a house cleaning smock or nightshirt.

I'm now reluctant to buy another Woot again, partly because I feel cheated and want to pout about it for a while and partly because the quality just isn't there. The designs and prices still can't be beat, no question there, but what value do they have if you don't like how the shirts feel and/or look on your body? Nada. Not for me.

You have no idea how many people I've led to the Woot fold over the years... I was a most ardent cheerleader in my uniform of a Woot tee, jeans and Chucks. Sigh... maybe it's a sign that it's time for me to expand my casual wardrobe beyond your brilliant and witty narrative writing limits.

It's sad that your first post had to be this one. Actually this thread is 25+ pages long, everyone hollered for and against this change, then it is what it is. Now it's time to move on. Woot will say it's your fault for not checking the "superior rule of size chart", but i feel for you. There is a separate thread that talks about women's size, here

Well, I'm not a big forum reader, so I missed this thread about the shirt supplier change.

I was happy, as I opened up my mailbox, to see yet another bag from woot.shirt. It was the Darth Meow that I'd been waiting for, so as always, I pulled off the shirt I had on (Tardis vs. delorian) and put the new one on. What's this? Shirts too big and feels different?! I check the tag to make sure the size is right and BOOM, made in Nicaragua! What Tiny Flowers?!? I loved the made in the USA shirts.

After reading several posts and seeing what happened with the supplier change, I guess it's so long woot.shirt

If you guys come to your senses make sure to send me an email so I can come back and buy more shirts, otherwise I'm gone.

I know its a crazy request, but how about cutting out the snark for those who are unaware of the changeover.

I am thankful that there still are a few AA blanks out there, so I haven't had to fully cut shirt woot off my list. I keep hoping that the new forum arrivals discussing how much they dislike the shirts might help sway, as the forum "regulars" seem to be ignored.

Anyhoo... another blank color will be vanishing here soon with today's sellout.

There was only a brief mention in this thread.

Ordered a shirt for my boyfriend the other day and finally opened the package today. Only thing I can comment on (since he hasn't tried it on yet) is that there is a rather unpleasant, chemical smell to it prior to washing.

Welp, I am glad I got my replacement After All This Time in a size that sort of, kind of maybe fits. It is still boxy and awful.
Anyway, that is the last dime you guys will ever be getting from me. With so many competitors out there you'd think you would actually listen to your customers. You guys are a joke.

I received my first Anvil shirt a few days ago and posted my initial thoughts upon taking it out of the package.

I've now washed it, drip-dried it, and worn it for a day. I've read that some people had problems with the neckbands twisting or the fabric stretching during wear.

I have actually been really pleased with how the shirt was worn so far. I had low expectations due to what I've read, but washing in cold water and avoiding the dryer, it didn't lose any size.

I wore it over a long sleeved tee, since it's a little brisk out today, so I can't really comment on softness much, but I haven't noticed any issues with shape.

I don't, however, wear tees for a form-fitting look, so shape isn't anywhere near as much a factor here. MM was my favorite in AA, and this one is a pretty similar fit - slim, but not a ladies' cut by any means.

One other comment - as some people have noted, the sleeves are indeed noticeably longer. I also notice that they are much slimmer. I am tall, so I find that this style of sleeve works for me.

My final analysis: if you were wearing MM before, you need to be aware that this shirt starts out smaller than the old ones did. It's like starting out closer to the size that the AA MM's were once they were put through the dryer. Also, the sleeves are longer and slimmer/tighter than the old ones ever were.

If all of that sounds like something that could potentially work for your body type (and you are OK with giving the Anvil shirts a try, of course), I would recommend giving it a whirl, with the caveat that you need to make sure that you don't ever put these shirts in the dryer.

I don't know why I still check this site anymore. I was so upset when I saw The Tyger the other day because it is such a neat shirt but it is impossible for me to get it due to the sizes. I'm a beanpole (which really doesn't bother me) so none of the Anvil sizes fit me anymore. I'm glad that a few of the shirts are still on AA but that will be ending soon enough. Anyway, I don't have much to add here except that I'm not happy with how things are going either. The only reason I'm really posting is because I was never active in the forums before. But I haven't disappeared and I want Woot to know that (even if they don't care). If they change things, they'll get my money again. :/

GoodJoe has been getting more of my money in recent weeks. All their recent ones are on AA blanks, WS to W2XL for gals, S to 3XL for guys.

Yeah, this definitely rubbed me the wrong way as well. Seemed like their response to the switch from American made was like "well at least the conditions in Houndras are still decent so you shouldn't be too mad". Then all of a sudden we're seeing the blankes come from Houndras / Nicaragua with no response from the woot team (that I've seen) as to the working conditions in Nicaragua.

So here's an update to my Anvil experimentation (original post about a page back):

I got the Anvil MM "Dandelion Drops" a few days ago. After a wash and dry (I never wear unwashed clothes, and I'm too lazy and impatient to hang-dry), I wore it all day yesterday. It definitely fits like a guy's shirt should - longer torso, straight cut, longer sleeves. Frankly, aside from the sleeve length, which doesn't bother me a bit, it fits just like the AA WXL shirts did, and maybe hangs just a smidge longer. The fabric is a little heavier and rougher, but not so much so that I wouldn't wear it.

All told, if I were to buy another Woot shirt, I'd buy a MM. I do wish that Woot had switched to a ladies blank that was more flattering to all, and was sized to fit more women, beanpole and curvy. I was in the target group for the change (would have loved a W2XL AA), but I've been forced to buy a men's shirt to avoid looking like a hot, sloppy mess. I also wish that I had figured out the sizing issue before "Almost Free" was reckoned. As it stands, I don't see myself wearing the Anvil AM fishy without a layer on top, because the waistline is so very unflattering.

So if you're like me, and you were hoping for a shirt that fit like an AA WXL with a little more breathing room, I suggest the Anvil MM (all other sourcing/manufacturing issues aside).

So, I've been burned. I liked, no loved is more accurate, the AA WXL. Ordered the "READ" shirt, not having become aware of the sizing changes. The Anvil shirt is, quite simply put, a TENT on me!!! There is no amount of shrinking that can ever be done to remedy the situation. It is huge all around. Except in length (I'm 5'9" for reference). This shirt is barely an appropriate length for an adult - might pass for my tween daughter, though two of her could easily fit into this shirt. The fabric is also a lot heavier, and not as soft in my opinion. I am SERIOUSLY disappointed. I sincerely doubt I will buy any more woot shirts for any members of my family (which will upset them greatly!!!!) unless the AA shirts come back. Higher cost+lower quality+miserable fit = I'll keep my money thank you.

Personally, the Teefury Women's Small fits me absolutely perfectly. It fits me better than the AA sizes ever did. The cotton may not be as soft as AA, but the fit is so much better that I'm okay with that. It's a really good fitted shirt that shows off my curves properly without being too tight or too big.

There have been more shirt.woot designs that have come out in the last month that I have wanted to get than in the three or four months previous combined. But I haven't bought any of them because the WS is way too big and I don't want to buy a kids shirt. I want a women's fitted shirt.

Now before someone does a bunch of research and replies that some of these sites use foreign shirts...well...save your time. Some of those sites are located overseas. Also I AM holding woot to a higher standard. First, I am going to encourage ANY site to not abandon American workers and continue to purchase here. Second, woot raised their prices based partly on that promise, and lastly, from the feedback I have seen so far customers are not as happy with the shirts. This is a mistake that can be reversed, but probably won’t. It seems that when woot got purchased the bottom line became the ONLY consideration and the things that made this site special are disappearing, at least for me. This is just an honest critique from a VERY good former customer. I would love to see woot reverse this, but I am not holding my breath. I have still come back and checked woot a few times, mostly to check on this thread. I have seen 2 shirts I would have bought, one of them I would have bought 3, but since the changeover I bought nothing. That will continue to be my policy. Maybe if companies (corporations) see that Americans won't continue to purchase from them if they abandon American workers then they will continue to employ our friends and neighbors....just sayin.......

Hey Guys don't forget about the support group and the petition going around to have woot switch back to AA. Tell your friends!

Just wanted to add yet another "this is my first post, and I am disappoint" post to this thread.

I wear WS in AA shirts, but the WS in the new shirts (which I didn't know you were going to switch to until I got shirts recently that were different...) are just tent-like. They have no shape, and a *huge* compared with the AA shirts. At the very least, an XS or something would help, but I suspect even that would be too big/wrong shape.

Aside from the size, the shape is also an issue. I've no issue with the different collar/sleeve shape, but despite the picture in the first post in this thread, I have found the new shirts to be more straight-up-and-down designed-for-women-with-no-curves than the old shirts. I have breasts, and I have a waist, and if I didn't want people to know that I'd order larger sizes, but as I order a WS I'd rather like the shirt to actually make *some* degree of effort towards displaying my shape.

Just want to reiterate that I had no idea about the shirt switches until I received a new shirt, and I do feel pretty upset, not just that I can no longer get amazing-fitting shirts like I used to get from woot, but that I was basically tricked into ordering shirts that I will likely wear so incredibly rarely as not to be worth the (increased recently) cost!

They just recently switched to all AA. Although it looks like they don't consistently offer 3XL like Narfcake mentioned.

If you want something in 3X, just e-mail nathan@goodjoe.com (or use the contact form on the site). I think everything's supposed to be offered in 3XL now, but not everything's updated yet.

Given the comments about Anvil women's sizes and that woot shirts take nearly a month to arrive home, I think I'm not going to be buying woot shirts in the future. At least Teefury tees are at home in two weeks and they fit me perfectly.

So, eh, count me out too, for the time being. :/
