Thanks, again! I thought about making the misspellings more subtle, but then I would risk people thinking I had made a mistake. I wanted to really make them annoying so you'd know something was up.

I'm thinking of an elated Irish muffin with the slogan "Top o' the Morning to Ya!"
for a product like "McGilliicuddy's Muffin Tops". What do you guys think?

I like this. And I feel that it would be better to keep "Eggs" plural... you never here someone say they had bacon and egg for breakfast... it's always bacon and eggs.

I had something to say, but I seem to have forgotten it.

Love the design. It would throw me off, if it just said "Bacon & Egg" I like it how it is. Definitely gets my vote.

Edited: because I can't spell this early in the morning.

I think the yellow of the banana has more pop on the blue shirt than on the green.

I agree that it pops more on blue...which is why I like the green, it doesn't scream PRIMARY COLORS at me, and it certainly doesn't disappear on the green.

[quote postid="4921500" user="nathanwpyle"]two cereal mascot ideas - either good?

quote]

i also immediately thought "owl" on this one, and wondered why his tail was "ghosty". the tail obviously makes sense for a phoenix, but i think the bird needs to be more "fiery". have you used your six colors? maybe add some yellow, or a different shade of orange?

(yes i love my "quotation marks")

I actually think the blue is sort of "expected" with that color combination but what about going with Asphalt or Slate to try to increase the contrast of the yellow on more mute color? Just a suggestion

The mascot is the bear in the image... but is he to much in the background and will this be called off topic?

I'm about 75% done with my design (will be ready for submitting late tonight), but I've got one concern about it at the moment - I've got six egg-type mascots in my design, and my omelet character is currently named "Om-nom-let". Is that too pop culture? I feel like it'd be ok since nom-nom is quite a natural sound that may occur while eating a tasty omelet, but on the other hand the internet really loves that particular phrase... any suggestions?

If you are using gimp for your halftone background I would really bump that oversampling up to 10 or 12.

I'm so frustrated right now. I was working on my design yesterday, but I wasn't feeling very good, so I had to stop. I won't be able to submit it when the derby starts. Hope I can finish it when I get off work.

Go with green! It makes the yellows look nice 'n' bright and gives the design a great energy.

So does anyone think that a design involving a character from a classic work of fiction (one which has had a movie made recently) would be considered pop culture?

I'd show a sample now to get some opinions, but I haven't started working on it yet. I tried a few other concepts but none of them were working out...

A recent movie would count as Pop culture... if it was a bad recent movie from 2 or more years ago I would say it is not pop culture anymore.

There was a reference to peter pan, another classic novel with recent film adaptations,in the pirate derby (which also had the pop culture rule) that passed through without rejection. I think that's pretty strong precedence.

Thanks for the preferences everyone! (artgirl too, good suggestion but I feel like a brighter color for this design)

Looks like green is the leader right now. Added another element - a little bg blur - yay or nay?

Turns out the movie version I'm thinking of came out around 7 years ago. I thought it was much more recent than that. It wasn't considered "bad" but wasn't huge by any means.

Intentional or not, the typos are a distraction that competes with the simplicity of the main concept. The blood type O joke is good on its own, adding in the typos joke really confused it for me...it's like you couldn't decide which joke you liked more and went with both.

I hate to say it but I think you are wrong. With all of the spelling mistakes the main joke seems to be the type-O's not Type O blood...

I think it is very well played.

And now that I think about it, putting the typos in the cereal (á la Alphabits) would make that joke stronger. Just a thought...the illustration is fantastic and lots of fun, so I see this design as having a ton of potential.

Yea, I see that, and I agree the typos idea seemed to be the stronger idea, but I looked at the pictures first, saw the red blood cells, related that to the title and then saw the typos and thought "well, that's sloppy and lazy of them!" In the 2 seconds you have to sell an idea to your audience, do you really want them to wonder why you can't spell if that's not the first thing you are relating the title to?
