Ugh, cream. I could do it on black or navy as well. Thoughts?

Trying out something different this week. Navy or black?

I'm normally a fan of navy, but the navy version seems to have more (ie too much?) blowy-line stuff on it. I think the black one comes off nicer.

I like this idea - I'm hoping that you will be filling in the outlined areas (eg, the trees will be green instead of white with a green outline) - the boots look very realistic and then the dream looks overly simplistic in comparison. Just my 2 cents' worth.

This looks like a dark grey to me(ie - I have to check my monitor settings). And I think it helps with the cloudy sky impression in a way black and navy wouldn't.

@axphw1 Oops, I didn't even look back to see if you replied. I think it is the laces, they aren't highlighted in any way so they are washed out in a backgroundy way.

I'm really thankful Curli76! That sounds great! "Our own dam place" it will be.

Thanks Omar, I'm really looking forward to seeing yours.

Midgerock, great one! love all the cool details

Kevlar, I really like it, but maybe you could use warm colors for the sky, like those you used for the lights on the tree I think that would work too :D

Is this something you designed or are altering? It's awesome either way. I'm asking as I have some amazing pictures of various outdoorsy stuff and was wondering if I was able to use the photos to make the finished product and still be in the rules.

Definitely pre-made vector silhouette brushes(trees and people, can easily tell as I have them myself) were used for this piece not a photo so that's a big difference I would think.

I'm also looking forward to this derby for the sake of my nature-lovin' kids (the amount of rock and leaves/pinecones they come home is never ending!)

Question on design. My experience has been altering rights free clip art, modifying my own photos and a host of other things I'm sure will make people shake their heads.

I want to try doing this stuff more by hand. Do many of you use a graphics tablet with stylus? [I don't know the proper name] Which one would be recommended on the cheap?

Do many of you draw and then scan? I have done this as well but not so much lately as this is mainly something fun for me to do.

Thanks in advance. I'm still drooling over the bunny shirt and the kindle reading tree.

I'm liking almost everything I see here so far, nice work artists. A few specific comments:

1. Midge, Kevlar, love both designs.

2. phylumsynthesis, looks like a watercolor or 1950s postcard, very cool!

3. tjschaeffer, I'd go with navy. It pops more.

4. dreadwood, I like the navy as well but I think the black is more evocative of clouds (which is what you're going for, right?)

Thanks wirdou--I'm trying out your advice and trying different options. Right now that specific brown resembles egg yolk once you spread it out on the sky, but I'll try switching around a few colors.

Please don't be upset if I still end up with blue at the end of the day though ;)

For me: I do have (or had - it broke last night) a stylus and tablet, which in derbies like this, it is golden. Mostly though I draw and scan then color and sometimes manipulate clip art. It really depends on what the design is. Thing is, I do not use Adobe Illustrator, I use CorelDRAW and PhotoShop for everything.

I wanted to hop in here, I know Nox already talked about the fact that the silhouettes were hand drawn, but for for an idea of how we work these derbies - here's a good illustration.

I'm (Py) actually from Lake CDA (the lake that the picture is based on). I have TONS of pictures of sunsets up here. So I took my faves - about 6 in total - and sent them to Nox for color, cloud, and style inspiration. Then, I wrote out exactly what I saw in my head - Lake, silhouetted figures and trees, cloudy, wild sky sunset in the background.

She takes those images and my description and turns them into a submission. Throughout the process we go in and change things, make small tweaks, etc. But everything she does in hand drawn and colored.

Hope that helps.

Love, love LOVE this design. I do agree with other posters about the boots having a clip art quality to them....what if they were on a mudroom floor or peeking out from a closet? I know this is an unfinished work so I'm sure you have something amazing planned. Can't wait to see your finished product and wish I could vote for it more than once!

I know this was mentioned elsewhere, but the boots are just a bit awkward, for lack of better phrasing. I get the point of the boots dreaming of the outdoors and being in that location, but the 2 elements just don't mesh yet. The boots have the clip art feel to 'em and I feel like that's detracting from the overall design a bit. I wish I could offer suggestions for what to do, but I just don't know. Maybe once the landscape portion is done you can play with things, maybe see how that part looks on it's own.

Good luck!

I like the boots thinking idea! I think it responds well to the challenge. They are dreaming of open space not in the closet!

Last I checked, the cards are free if you print them out yourself (and laminate to make them more durable). It's only if you want pre-made cards that you have to pay up.
