Good morning everybody! We jogged/walked 3.5 miles on the beach. We made a big leap from 1 mile to 3.5 miles. We are supposed to have 2.5 inches of rain this evening and tonight from the remnants of the tropical storm. I think we will travel back to the mountains on Thursday. Daughter graduates on Tuesday. She passed her last exam today.

Hi there Gman and all other PWs. Greetings from Poland. I hope everybody had a nice Memorial Day weekend.

I am building a rolling gate for my driveway, since I finished the easy part of the front fence. The driveway is about 15 feet wide, for two cars and the gate is in two parts meeting in the middle. Making the gate involves concrete, rollers, lots of steel and wood. Very manly stuff. First I had to pour 4 piers to hold the rollers which are fairly heavy duty. Then after I made the concrete, (by hand, my neighbor has a little mixer but I didn't want to ask to borrow it for reasons I will explain later.) 5 wheel barrows worth, I had to plant the rollers into the wet concrete. I anchored them with 15" long threaded rods, 4 per roller. In addition I made re-bar cages to put in the piers which are about about 2 feet deep. Nothing should move that shouldn't. Next I had to cut the steel bottom part that fits on the rollers. It is about 4" on a side and each piece is about 14 feet long. Heavy stuff. Then 2 upright posts on each side and a couple of steel rails to fasten the wood pickets to. The bottom rails need to be long because when the gates are closed, the gate is suspended over the driveway, the first roller is behind the column where the driveway ends, the next roller is about 5 feet back along the fence. That way there is nothing in the way when you pull into the driveway. Of course the hard part was keeping everything aligned so the gate rolls smoothly and everything lines up when they meet in the middle. Thanks to my mad skilz and some luck, I made it all work correctly. I'll post some pictures in a day or two.

I did all the work except I don't weld. My neighbor has a small arc welding machine and he is happy to fulfill my welding needs. The only problem is Polish men love to critique, find problems and offer all kinds of advice on building projects. I like to design my projects, figure out how to build it and then work alone. Every time I start a new project my neighbors come running! All I have to do is pick up a tool and their spider sense starts to tingle and they know I am going to build something. Then come the questions; What are you building?, why?, how are you doing it?, no, you should do it this way; then the one neighbor will discuss it with the other neighbor and they both have ideas different from each other and different from mine. To top it all off, they don't speak English and although I understand a fair amount of Polish I don't speak it much or well. My neighbors are great and helpful but sometimes I want to tell them to just let me do it my way! My neighbor was doing the last of the welding last night, I was tired, hungry and hot and then his wife came by to offer her opinions on my gate as well. I wanted to tell them be quiet, just do the welding like I asked you to do but of course I smiled and nodded my head and gave my neighbor an 8 pack of beer for his labor. At least he works cheap! I try to be as stealthy as possible when I build things because sometimes it is just exhausting dealing with my helpful neighbors. They also assume since I am American I don't know how to build things, but I spent several years being self employed doing remodeling, kitchens, decks, painting, etc, so I do know a little bit about this work. I would have thought my deck would have convinced them I know what I am doing but I guess not. I am not complaining just ventilating a little, I really couldn't ask for better neighbors. They have taught me a few things such as how to mix concrete which is apparently something all Polish men learn when they are children. If you drive down a street in Poland you will see a pile of sand in front of about 75% of the houses and a few bags of cement in the garage. The Polish man's attitude is you never know when you might need to mix up a batch of concrete so it is good to be prepared. Yes, I have several bags of cement in my garage and a pile of sand out front as well as several lengths of re-bar under my deck. After all, you never know.

My dogs like me, that is important.

Edlada,I'm very interested in seeing the fruits of your labor. If the gate turned out near as well as the deck then I'm sure it's a masterpiece!
I've been trying think up a reason to buy a MIG welder and polish up my skills but I really haven't come up with a project that would justify the cost.

Can you rent a welder?
Isn't it too hot to even think about welding in TX?

I wonder if I would like welding? I liked melting solder as a kid.

Took a stained glass class to play with the solder too!

How will it roll when there is snow?

You have 8 packs of beer?!?!?
Every boy in america should move there! Two more beers in a pack!

I need a few buckets of cement for a small job. Tree pulled up the sidewalk and it seems the easy fix is to make a tiny cement ramp so you don't trip.
Yeah, right.
I put in a work order to the town. It is their tree and their sidewalk. I think they only do it the right way every 5 year. (as in every 5 years or so, they go and and actually rip out the sidewalk and replace it for everyone who put in a work order. I think they did it 2 years ago.)

Best part is, their tree. Their sidewalk.
Someone trips, homeowner gets sued, not the town.

Hi Ice, thanks for the nice words, pics in a day or two. I really want to learn to weld, I would just buy a little cheap rod arc welder like my neighbor has. Go ahead and buy the MIG welder, once you have it you will find lots of uses for it and discover many new friends! I had an uncle that was an incredible welder. Long after he left his job at the local GE plant for a different company, GE would call him in for extremely difficult jobs. After many years in heavy industry in PA, he moved to Texas. He apparently found a way to weld new cutting teeth on oil drilling bits (A very difficult thing I guess) and made his company a lot of money, not that they shared much with him. He was certified to weld valves for nuclear power plants as well. Give him any kind of welding equipment and he was a genius as well as an artist!

My dogs like me, that is important.

Hi D'name. Rolling in the snow won't be a problem, the gate is about 6" off of the ground and it doesn't snow that much here. Besides, each side of the gate probably weighs close to 300 lbs, so it would take a pretty large drift to slow it down.

Funny, beer here comes in 4 packs or 8 packs and 30 to a case but hardly anybody here can afford to buy a case, mostly it is one can or bottle or a four pack.

Young Polish people like beer but if they want to get seriously drunk, they can buy a .7 liter bottle of cheap vodka for about $6.00. Beer is about $.80 a can (500 ml) for Polish beer, which tastes quite good by the way.

Morning all. Having a really hard time getting going today. Oh well.

My dad and I made a rolling gate (only one car wide), but we cheated, we modified the existing chain link gate, added the wheels, and fastened boards to the front so it looked like a wooden gate.

I love hearing all the projects! Keep them coming. I've got a slew of them in my mind right now for here, need to get stuff cleared out and gone so I can get going on the ones that are schedule for the warm weather block. And I think I'm finally getting Orc to let me try my hand and replacing the shower in the master bath with a larger tiled shower

I guess I better get ready to leave. I hope everyone has a great day.

Oh, and the tooth fairy is running out of International currencies if anyone is leaving the country, drop me a PM. I could use more coins!

Right!! That's what I thought.

We are getting ready for niece's graduation Thursday. Had one family party Sunday, combined with my Grandpa's 85th b-day.

Dinner tomorrow & grad on Thursday with desserts here afterwards.

Busy Busy! Have to vote in my primary today. Doesn't really matter for presidential, but there are other offices where it counts.

trying to decide which party though. one is where I belong, the other I want to vote in because they have stupid referendums I want to vote against. hmm...

Hi, had to go to work and then talked to my daughter on Skype for almost 2 hours. Now I have a few minutes before I go to sleep, you know, central European time and all. (GMT +1)

I love doing projects on my house, it is very satisfying work. The house is new (3 years old now) so no major renovation yet but plenty of small jobs to keep me busy.

If you want some euro coins (get them while they last, who knows what might happen to the euro!), Polish zloty, German pfennigs and maybe a few other countries send me a pm, it wouldn't be too difficult to put a small package in the mail.
