I use the quotes because, really, what's a holiday but something we all decide together? If we all took the day off for "Bill Murray Memorial Day" then it would suddenly exist, right?

But today's National Donut Day (Agingdragqueen even left a big box on my desk to share with our co-workers) and that has me thinking about how this holiday doesn't feel the same as, say, Father's Day. And I'm wondering why that is. Why do some holidays feel fake while others seem real? You guys have any explanation or comment?

Holiday is derived from Holy Day, and Donuts qualify as something Hol(e)y to be honored.

it only feels "real" if there's either a day off or a fairly large merchandising push/media blitz. and "all the doughnut shops" does not count as large.

mabe if you could buy someone a card instead of a doughnut. then hallmark would make it "real."

I like the 'fake' holidays better. At least appreciating a donut is something I can understand even if I don't like them.

While I agree 100% with your sentiment overall - specifically (and surprisingly), Donut Day is NOT a marketing gimmick.

National Donut Day was established by The Salvation Army in 1938 in Chicago to honor the "Donut Lassies" who served these treats to soldiers during World War I.

Someone could buy someone else a nice tee in honour of the day, that might make it feel more "real" as well.

Though it isn't National Doughnut Day here, wrong nation. THis despite trhe fact that one of our more iconic companies is in fact in the doughnut business.

I think if we eat enough doughnut's we'll all qualify as LARGE!

What nation? And do you have any weird holidays over in Foreignania, or are they just a side effect of being an American?

Based on the doughnut house comment, I'm guessing Canada.

And, I think of all the non-religious, non-day-off work holidays out there, I like Hoodie Hoo Day best.

incidentally, since this thread is in world of woot shirts, does that mean doughnut day isn't celebrated by the other woot sites (i.e., doughnuts not being eaten by staffers supporting the other sites) ?

Yeah, Canada it is. We mostly just co-opt the ones from the US, though we do have some strange ones of our own.

I feel that facebook, etc. has taken all the fun out of the fake holidays for me. They used to feel more like inside jokes that you could let your friends in on. It used to be fun to mention to somebody that it was Star Wars Day or Pi day and have them have to think for a second. Now, everyone sees 30 different people wishing them a happy "talk like a pirate day" or see 50 different photochops saying "May the Fourth be with you" first thing in the morning. There is just no fun in them anymore IMO.

I don't know whether to agree you, or call you out for sounding like a hipster. But I guess if I almost feel the same, that makes me a bit of a hipster too. Ah well.

I'm not sure that I'd nominate Father's Day as the epitome of a real holiday.

Thanks to Mother's Day & Father's Day, as well as their birthdays & Christmas, it seems like I am CONSTANTLY buying gifts for my parents.

I like the fake ones best, cause I don't have to buy anyone anything on those days.
