Let's pretend you save Bill Gates' life and he gives you a blank check with no strings, provided you spend it on a project. What do you do?

Do you plot out a standard sci-fi TV show with cutting-edge special effects? Do you make a cheap movie with the most passionate acting? Do you hide away and write a serious novel or sit down and carve a single block of marble or spend a year painting a masterpiece on the ceiling of some hovel? Or do you just throw a lot of money at someone else's dream and get listed as a producer on Firefly II? (Hey, these days, nothing's more creative than Hollywood accounting, right?)

But, seriously, if money's no object, what would be your art project of choice? And why?

Hi, I'm one of the writers. My powers are limited but I'll do what I can.

Actually, I just did it. Sadly I didn't have the Bill Gates checkbook, but all my extra saved pennies. Back in the 90's there was a beloved series of games that were sadly left on a cliff-hanger. There was a fan forum where a die hard group of admirers always hoped that the story would be completed. With the magic of crowd-sourcing, we funded the project, and within 18 months our 14 year dream will come true!
The series? My sig says it all.

As to the why? The games has such a memorable set of characters and such a strong and intriguing story line, there was no way it should have been allowed to wither away.

With unlimited funding, I would happily setup a bakery and spend my time turning sugar and butter into art.

Tasty, tasty art.

My speech is not splitting. I am speaking in Cthulhu.

I think I would start making huge metal sculptures.

I think I'd more likely fund or head a project that advances science or saves lives before creating a great testament to my creative ego.
Of course, JenDupre is awesome for what she did.

I have a Y/A book series that I'm writing. I already did the first book, but have to edit/rewrite parts. But getting free time to do so is difficult. If I had a large block of money that some muti-billionaire was just willing to give me? I would take a year off to finish edits on the first book and look for an agent/publisher to sell the book.

Writing full time would be a dream job, and if I had the time and money to put in to it, I would do it.

I would make an epic action/rpg video game out of this story I've had in my head since I was a kid. It would be like... umm... Zelda, Sonic, and Final Fantasy at the same time! Then I'd be a famous millionaire and I could finally live in my dream house, a real functioning tree-house.

I'm a metal sculptor on the weekends!

If you really want to do that, its actually pretty cheap to start up! The tools are relatively inexpensive and are pretty low-maintenance. The only expensive thing is the insurance for when you blow something up...

GASP you are cooler than I. My problem is space- I'm in downtown Seattle and just don't have a lot of room in my apartment. But otherwise, yeah, metal scraps and tools wouldn't be too ridiculous- I just need the room. And probably a truck for toting. In my dreams, I would make sculptures two times as big as me.

but what if the money came with a stipulation that it had to be for an "artistic" (as opposed to a scientific or lifesaving or similar) purpose?

I would move back to Bolivia, fully funded, and provide clean water, feeding centers, and bring the Good News to the Bolivians. Maybe it's not art, but it would be beautiful.

I think yarnbombing would be funny. Possibly creating a huge hat for the top of the Space Needle.

But my project would be installing light up poles (so the bus knows to stop when it is dark/hard to see) and a place to sit at every bus stop.

I'm just hanging out, really.

There are actually quite a few trees in Pioneer Square who have darling little sweaters on them! And others that have been painted blue. So, if I go with the theme and my medium of choice, I should probably make some huge metal cages for some other trees.

Honestly, I would keep doing what I'm doing. I would invest in some new screen printing equipment to replace my stuff from the 80's, and start printing a line of shirts. If I didn't have to worry about living expenses, I would pour all my time into creating, producing and marketing my shirts. Maybe it sounds silly, but I'm close to living my dream already.

Ah, since we're dreaming (and thanks for the invitation to): There's a building two blocks down I drive by and dream of turning into an animation studio where I can hire some creative sorts, install tower computers with animation software that I've contracted ToonBoom to come down and teach us how to use, set up a studio for recording voices, install a 24 hr. kitchen and work on some already storyboarded short projects that will take more than the time I'm awake from midnight to 3 a.m each night. And then, when the first and/or best one is completed, use part of the investment cash I've tucked away to transfer it to film for entry in Oscar eligible film festivals.

And when the profits start, begin working on the John Kenneth Galbraith's "positive power of wealth" hypothesis.

Almost forgot the why: because goofing around with words + art makes me grin and it would be amazing to experiment with resources and collaborators. And there's stories I want to tell.

In less grandiose visions, I would actually love to make a small art book about these mouse characters in my brain.

My biggest stumbling block for any of my dream creations is myself. Want to hear something really silly and personal about me? I sometimes refuse to draw my most precious characters because Im terrified I wont bring them to life as wonderfully as they deserve. -cries- For this reason, I tend to avoid doing a lot of art. :\ I always feel someone better than me should be doing the art.

There needs to be special artist shrinks to help us dysfunctional arters cope with our stupid problems. Then more dreams might become real!

Totally understandable in my opinion. I have the same problem when I come to writing certain characters. It goes something like this: "I don't know if this chapter works the way I want for the character. Well, truthfully, I'm not sure this set of paragraphs work. Actually, when you get down to it, I'm not sure a single sentence works! Quick! My rock! My roooock! Some one get me my rock to hide under before it's too late for my character!" *hides*

I recognize that obstacle. And if we could just get over it more successfully, a blank check from Bill Gates would be a little less important ; )

I like to think that I would devote myself to writing the sci-fi epic that's been rattling around in my brain for over a decade. It's something that started out as a single story about the future and has ballooned into a truly epic story the spans across hundreds of years and all across the galaxy. It's something that's best suited for the big screen, so I guess I'd have cause to restart my never-quite-got-off-the-ground-because-I-could-never-finish-a-screenplay movie writing career.

Well, that or I'd write and draw a battle manga idea I've had in my head for a long time.
