It's an EXTREMELY graphic example of the hardships of cross-country travel in the late 1800's. Granted the AP level course focused more on things like Kit Carson, Spanish/American Relations, etc. But it was still glossed over, albiet briefly, mainly because we all knew it from 4th grade.
