As a Donner...I have now completed part of my Christmas/birthday shopping for this year. With this last name, you have to laugh because you do get comments and it does get old....so might as well have fun and make the most of it!

I grew up in NH and am quite familiar with the story. It was definitely mentioned in my American History classes on the westward pioneers.

Gross! But funny, wonderfully funny. Okay so I have a dark sense of humor, but it has gotten me through 71 years and that can't be all bad.

You must be new here... are you not aware that the weekly derby winners are chosen by Wooters voting all week on the site? This was picked because there are enough of us sickos out there who voted for it.

I'm so glad to see that this design won. I thought it was a great take on the theme and really clever.

As for the comments about how lyons is being disrespectful with this design...what occurred with the Donner Party is a well-known part of American history (unless your history teachers are keeping the darker stories like this from you or if they're unqualified Mortimers) and because of this notoriety, what happened has become the subject of many, many jokes. Lyons is not the first nor will he be the last person to make a Donner Party joke and he shouldn't be subjected to the harsh criticism. Everyone has their own standards for determining what's funny, and you may not agree with this being a funny shirt, but don't act like he's committing a grave sin by designing this shirt.

If I hadn't just finished reading Desperate Passage: The Donner Party's Perilous Journey West a couple of weeks ago, I would snap this up. Reading first hand accounts from children in the party makes my stomach turn at this shirt. =(

Here's a challenge... how 'bout all the people that said "disgusting" post their favorit FUNNY joke, which doesn't make fun of someone? Trust me it'll be tough.

2 of the funniest jokes I ever heard (and was repeating within days of the events):

1. Did you hear about the new drink called the Osama? Its made with 2 shots and a splash of water!

2. As Farah Fawcett lay on her death bed, She told Ryan O'Neal that her dying wish was that all the children in the world would be safe. 3 hours later, Michael Jackson died!

and so on...

I'm an East Coaster and know all about the Donner party so I don't think it is a West Coast thing. I think it is funny but I don't really need any more shirts. Two drawers full of Woot! shirts already...

I like knock knock jokes. My daughter thinks they are l-a-m-e.

I'd rather make fun of corporations, like this joke:

I ate at a famous french restaurant for dinner. Jaque(sp???) in the Box. (hehehehe, still makes me giggle)

Considering how close I live to Donner Lake and Donner Summit, I can't pass it up. I may just have to wear it to the Donner memorial & museum some day!

The only problem I have with it is the asterisk is a little too high.

Ha! Our last name is Donner so we just ordered a bunch of these for the family including the kids. Our next vacation shirt?

and yes, we totally "get it" although we know a lot of people won't. We are always surprised at the lack of comments in restaurants when we use our last name.

I am sure there are people that don't understand, look it up then chuckle. I am not one of them. Instead, I looked it up and thought it was horribly disgusting. (and don't put words in my mouth. You don't know me. You don't know what I was/am thinking). I didn't complain about it being in the derby because it fit the theme. I don't think it is an awful awful shirt. I do think it is a bit of poor taste and I would never buy it or wear it.

Someone previous asked why vampire wine was ok, but people don't like this shirt. I provided that explaination to where you are jumping to conclusions and think that I don't have a right to an opinion. (WRONG)

I just don't find tragedies funny. Sorry, not gonna change my mind. I wouldn't find a Titanic shirt funny either or name any other tragedy, still not funny to me.
