Staff

Time again for another march toward t-shirt doom! Discuss this week's life-or-death struggle for sales supremacy as chronicled on the Reckoning page all week long.

Here's how the Reckoning week runs now: every Tuesday at midnight, we retire the previous week's lowest-selling shirts and launch this here discussion thread. Tuesday around noon we'll post the all-new, all-early Reckoning Recon. On Friday, we'll juice demand and prime the pump with a little weekend reminder post. Finally, on the following Monday, the Day of Reckoning post sounds the last call for the Reckoned shirts. All of those posts will be linked below. Monday night (or Tuesday morning), it starts all over again. The Reckoning, she is a hungry beast...

A.A. (Woot) Blanks: born July 20, 2007 (St. Louis, Missouri); died July 23, 2012 (Amazon Headquarters, Seattle, Washington), age five years and three days. Succumbed to injuries sustained on February 21, 2012; the cause of death was ruled a homicide. Services will be private with ongoing interment in closets all over the world.

Since its epic began five years ago, AA - as it was known - provided the backdrop for approximately 1,700 artistic creations printed by the site shirt.woot. It played a key role in multiple blockbusters, such as The Binge, a tragicomedy featuring a blue muppet overcome by his addiction to milk-and-cookies that came out of nowhere to become shirt.woot’s most commercially successful venture. It mastered myriad genres, from the classic word pun (Donut Panic) to psychological masterpieces (Some Motivation Required), with an artistic range from the topical (Acquired Taste) to the risqué (Special Delivery, Fresh Cake). Other creations were cult hits, appealing to video gamers (The Cheese is a Liederkranz) or the oft-ignored rabbit fanatics (Imposter). Not all of its creations were commercially successful, however, with the tale of a lonely haunted house, Housewarming Gifts, among several spectacular flops.

AA bred controversy, even in success: its longest-surviving progeny, Nevermore, suffered accusations of illegibility and was the target of death threats that continue to this day. AA’s critics pointed to its unrealistic sizing chart - perhaps based on the measurements of the nearly-naked, too-thin models who frequented its website - as well as the untoward behavior of its CEO. Others appreciated the unusual sizing, noting a rare opportunity to find shirts that flattered their bodies. Supporters argued that AA provided jobs to US-based garment workers, while others cheered AA’s unusually soft cotton. In addition to its strengths and successes, AA’s very real problems will forever be a part of its complicated legacy.

A.A. Blanks will be missed by many but never forgotten by all those who will continue to be touched by its shirts.

RIP A.A. Blanks (Obituary)

RIP Woot AAs.

On a brighter note, Patrickspens' streak survives, by a thread. When I mentioned the possibility yesterday, I really didn't believe Woot had a design of his on standby. Congrats, Patrick.

Yeah, so there's that...

I suppose it depends how you define the streak. I've never really considered "Shirts too new to be Reckoned..." as part of the Reckoning. But then again I've never given it much thought.

Situations like that are included in his streak, though it's true that it has been a good two years since the last time this particular situation has come up.

Yeah, so there's that...

I submit to your research.

Considering how rare a patrickspens non-derby winner is, I wonder if Woot selected today to help keep the streak alive.

I got opening numbers, if anyone cares, but I am VERY LATE on "I Love Science" and "Which Way to Bacon Town?" and closer than I like on "Unstealthiest Ninja 3", "Star Powered", "Leonardo", and "Color Outside the Lines".

So the new numbers page doesn't like to update when there's lots of traffic. At the close of the Woot-off every shirt was 20-25 minutes behind time. Over the next half hour I passed through the list, refreshing the page, then recording the total, and the number of minutes since the 'close' of the Woot-off for the last sale. I would assume any sale within 10 minutes of 'close' is a Woot-off sale that just hadn't been finished yet. So now that you have your grain of salt, here's my numbers.

The last shirt printed on AA and offered on shirt.woot was When I Grow Up. But on July 23rd, the last two shirts available for purchase from the Reckoning [1971 (women), Artichokey (kids)] disappeared.

(The very last shirts to print on AA would have been from the Woot Plus kids' sale.)

While I see the RIP AA posts, I believe there will probably be one more batch of randoms that will include the last remaining AA's(very few).

Although that might not be true, I think there are still some around, hence the kids sale and shirts in certain sizes still being printed up until yesterday...

In other news, its kind of funny to me that the last AA new print was yesterday as I just got my randoms yesterday and received an "Artichokey" on AA to add to my 3 on Anvil... guess I'm glad I didn't buy anymore during its last week on the reckoning. Just think its funny when I purchased them, I got Anvils, when I randomed it, I got an AA. My other two randoms were on Anvil. Looks like I'll be wearing the AA and giving the Anvils as gifts!

I'm thinking that numbers are going to remain dark this week in memorandum as it were. I'll be looking at what I can scrape together next week and see if I'll be able to fill at least a small part of what we're loosing. My numbers were never as good as Narfcake's though.

Saddly you can't: Once it's gone it's gone (from here) for good.

You can watch the WootPlus side sales, they run 10 or so old designs a week. If you just want a copy for youself I'd advise trying a trading site, like teetrade.org

Ooh! Both Point Pinos Lighthouse and the Pacific Grove Marine Gardens State Marine Conservation Area are on the list of places I'd really like to visit someday-which-realistically-means-never-unfortunately. I bet it was beautiful! Glad to hear you enjoyed it. Not sure when I'll next talk to Narfcake - he really seems to be enjoy life post-woot! - but I'll mention your comment.

Reckoning: so earlier today, I glanced at the Reckoning and thought, "Why are there only 26 shirts? Oh. Hmm, I wonder if As You Wish could overtake UnNinja3 - I'll go check Narf's numbers. Oh. Well, at least my Binge mug should be here any day! Oh."

Oh."

Thanks for passing on the message. I still don't own a laptop [I now know I'm hardly the only teacher who doesn't], but I'm pretty sure I would have left it home anyway. I've been up to the Monterey area before, but never to Asilomar. If you never leave the campus, it's like summer camp for adults with better food And wine!

Narf says hi. He expresssed much amusement about Schrodinger's mugs and asked when I thought Binge and Nevermore would reach their respective milestones. I thought, "Hey, that's your job!" (We settled on "soon" and "not next week." For two number nerds, that was impressively imprecise!)

Reckoning: I got two Artichokeys in the mail yesterday! Oh, that's not relevant to this Reckoning? Well, um...

Close enough.

Did anyone pick up a copy of Free Your Heart? It's sitting at 20th right now and on-screen I've always thought it was beautiful, but worried about how well it would print. Any feedback?

I thought it printed pretty decent. It's definitely darker on the shirt, and the light rays end a bit more abruptly than they do on-screen. But overall, I was satisfied.
