Sunspots can mess up OTA broadcasts, but they really shouldn't mess up cable. Then again, I'm not really doing my emag homework so...

We have an i-phone(Mrs. Ice's) and an Android in the household.
If you want to pay out the @ss for older technology then I would suggest an over-rated i-phone. Androids are less expensive and offer all the features you described.You can usually get a usable android for next to nothing with a data plan. Just my opinion. Some carriers offer free how-to classes on smartphone use. I know Verizon does.They are really easier to use than your pc.
For the record Mrs. Ice is very happy with her i-phone 4S so I guess it is a matter of preference.
