My inspiration was mostly the covers from all the 1950s and 1960s pulp SF I read. If they show landed rockets, they are typically sitting on their tail-fins, on an empty plain. The mountains were a way of addressing the horizon-line without leaving it a boring line.
Together, it looks like I did manage to create a highly stylized image of WSMR. Thank you for mentioning it, I just learned something nifty today!
