I really like the looseness of the artwork. Not fussy, not totally structured, like it could all disappear in a wild flurry of sparks.
For what it's worth, it also reminds me of The Black Stallion, though those books were published much later. Fire imagery (and names like Firetail and Bonfire) figures into several of the books.
