A Shirt.Woot design is worth a half dozen words...

Ever thought "this song would make a great shirt"? Us neither, but presumably it's something that one would think, and that's what we're after this week. Unfamiliar with the "reinterpreted" idea? Check out some previous Derbies here and here for inspiration. Some song titles we do NOT recommend: "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm," "Song 2," and "MmmBop."

  • Title your design "Inspired by [Song Name]"
  • No pop culture (except the song itself, obvs)
  • No text-only shirts

I'm finding that my short list is not very short. What I'm saying is, expect about 17 subs from me this week, give or take.

Giving away an idea I won't be doing... "Pinball Wizard," with Gandalf playing and Hobbits, etc. looking on. Maybe make the game accuse him of tilting. Would love to see that.

Might as well have a signature now since I have something to put into it.

Yeah, I won't be doing "Rain of Blood" by Slayer, so you know, have at it.

Actually, while the movie is pop culture, the book is a classic. Just don't make the characters look like they did in the movie. Or it can be a generic wizard with other make-believe creatures looking on.

I actually started doodling this a couple of weeks ago and it fits this theme perfectly.

Thoughts?

That is arguable. If the wizard was generic enough, yes, but if you add the hobbits, then you are touting the pop culture line. Yes the book is classic, but if it is ALSO popular then it's pop culture. The two CAN over-lap and having one criteria true, makes the whole thing true. IMHO.

In general, do you guys think it's better to pick stuff with GREAT themes that fewer people have heard of (The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! by Sufjan Stevens), or songs everyone knows that maybe are a tad obvious (Raspberry Beret by Prince)? By the way, I call both of those.

Voting-wise, a creative take on a popular track is likely to get you further. Just more likely to get fans of the song to upvote you. But I'd love to see your interpretation of the more bizarre/obscure tracks. Do well enough and it'd likely get an HM at least. Or, if nothing else, you can try and pawn the design off to the artist :P

Most important is that the image stands alone, IMO. Unless you've got a great visual pun like Pinball Wizard, but those are harder to come by.

Slightly confused on this one... Does the design have to be based solely on the song title itself? Or can it be based on a lyric within said song?

So no opinions or suggestions, then?

Aw man. You and orabbit don't really agree here! But I think it's enough to make my choices. Really hoping for that HM soon (if not plain ol' victory)!

I agree with orabbit that it will definitely help if the image can stand on it's own... You'd be surprised how many people seem to dislike the idea of having to explain what's on their shirt.

Running with the devil? I'm not a huge fan of the song, so my opinion is probably not that useful, but you rendered it pretty well. It's clear what you were going for. I'd try to (in tgentry's terms) plus it somewhat. not sure what i'd add or change, but i feel like you can do more.

It must be about the TITLE, that is always how these interpretation derbies have worked. In the video game title derby, people got rejected when the content was used to elicit the name. So go ahead and use the stuff from in the song if you want, but the NAME of the song needs to be obvious.

Id pick a popular song, but spin it in a strange, new, exciting way.
Disconnect the obvious by two or three leaps.

I like it, but there's this.

I bought this shirt a few days before the Boston Marathon bombing, and have never worn it. Bad timing.

Obvious request for shirt design here: Foxy lady. I think it can be done right without strictly coming across as a furry design.

Yea, I saw that when I first had the idea. Figured the treadmill was a bit of a different take. Not sure I nailed it, though.

I also have these ideas? Any better?
