Much precedence shows that it's legal to have a different background in the shirt comp, though you do run the risk of a grumpy, drunken rejectionator taking you down for some reason. You just need to have the shirt comp with the right colour (that is, the actual tee image), and you have to have the correct solid colour in your design detail (no fancy texture, no gradients).
