10k Cup: 2016 edition!

by Laura Duncan

The $10K Cup is here, and it's your chance to get 10,000 extra big ones for your derby-winning shirt design! This post has been UPDATED with all four Derby themes! Read on for more:

For every Derby in July, things will run pretty much like they always do. You'll submit a design. Users will vote. The top 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place vote-getters will sell on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday respectively.

BUT THEN…

Each of those Derby winners for all of July's Derbies will be entered into the $10k Cup Challenge. Whichever one sells the most shirts ON ITS FIRST DAY wins $10,000 (and all the other money we owe you contractually too). Let us reiterate: this will be based on FIRST DAY SALES. Top 20 sales don't count, so the winners of the last derby have just as good a chance as the winners of the first.

Sounds good, yeah? Time to get started! Here's the Derby info:

Derby #556: 10K Round I: Magnitudes (launches 6/30): Microscopic to macro, tiny things can form into huge things, and every giant idea started with a tiny spark. Design a tee with this scale and magnitude in mind.

Derby #557: 10K Cup Round II: Fake promotional tees (launches 7/7): We’ve all got these shirts balled up in our closets, like the one from that 5k where you threw up on a guy in a banana suit. But hey, go beyond race tees. These designs can come from any fake event, such as the D&D World Series, or a BS social equity promo like “free paternity tests sponsored by the Dark Side.”

Derby #558: 10K Cup Round III: Dystopia (launches 7/14): Look, not everything is butterflies and rainbows. Unless your vision of dystopia includes butterflies and rainbows. Show us what fresh hell looks like.

Derby #559: 10K Cup Round IV: Complicated simple machines (launches 7/21): Create a design using the 6 simple machines as your starting point. For quick reference, the six classic simple machines are as follows:

  • Lever
  • Wheel & axle
  • Pulley
  • Inclined plane
  • Wedge
  • Screw

Use one. Use more than one. Whatever you need to engineer something great. BTW, the Sonic Screwdriver is not a simple machine. Neither is a wedge salad. Unless the wedge salad is on a pulley. You get the idea.

So there you have it. We can’t wait to see what y’all come up with! Let the designing commence! Oh wait, one more thing: No cream tees! Ok, now let the designing commence! May the best (selling) shirt win!
