Thank you for the compliment. You are right that the Earth's orbit is elliptical however the eccentricity is so small the orbit appears circualr, Bobby Hashemi is correct.

The math isn't exact - 365. 242? is I think the right number. Otherwise 1900 and 2100 would be leap years and they are not.
http://aa.usno.navy.mil/faq/docs/leap_years.php

Since this is supposed to look like a proof, coming up with a wrong answer is a bigger deal than it would be on other shirts.

Our earth's orbit is actually 1 degree away from a perfect circle.
It appears as an ellipse because the circle is rotated sideways when put into a textbook.

It's a common misconception in science.

I was going to make this post, then I saw yours That's right.
By the current "rule" 365 + 1/4 − 1/100 + 1/400 = 365.2425. But even that's not perfectly right, considering this shirt is a math shirt, it should be exact...

"The vernal equinox year is about 365.242374 days long (and increasing), whereas the average year length of the Gregorian calendar is 365.2425."

As long as the correction isn't that significant, they probably will if you provide them with a new print ready file. they did that with mine once because they changes didnt affect the actual design that was being voted on.

This shirt really does deserve the win. Just make the couple corrections (the first "=" sign in the last line as a "x" sign) as well as making it 365.2425 as the other posters recommend. The only other recommendation would be to "clean" up the appearance of pi. This is a symbol revered by mathematicians, most of us write it with some degree of skill.

Anyways, as a Chemical Engineering PhD. I love this shirt. I want 3.

I've thought about this a lot and honestly I think I like it better as 365.25. I know it's inappropriately rounding up but I think the layperson or just anyone will understand the purpose of the shirt more if the answer is left as 365.25.

Iambusy....What about this....? If you want to give the approx. measurement of 365.25, couldn't you simply change your proof to include a squiggly line that represents "approximately" rather than solid lines that represent the "equal to" sign? Maybe that would allow you to keep the number that you want and please the math folks who want it to be more accurately presented.

You did see the earlier post about the first equal sign needing to be changed to a multiplication sign in the last line, right?

Just wanted to make sure because I definitely believe you are in a great position to be printed this week. Congratulations. (My husband is a statistician/econometrician, so I may just have to buy one for him...in fact, we met in a Ph.D. program for Econometrics....so I may need one too for the math element! Ahhhh spending too much money on woot shirts these days!!)

To win on your first entry is fantastic. I know...I don't want to get your hopes up because the contest has several days left and I don't want to jinx it. But I suspect you are in pretty good shape for at least one of the top 3 positions. If I was a betting gal....I'd put you, the Giraffe's and TGentry's entry in the top 3.

Have you seen Cwarrignton's site shirtderbystats.com . If you visit the current derby and click on the top 10, you can see his estimates based on an algorithm he uses with hotness votes. He's been pretty good at establishing the right rank even if the votes are sometimes off. Here's a link to the current derby's top 10 and their vote estimates.

Thanks for your confidence. That site is really cool and it will be interesting to see how accurate it is.
Here is what the current model of the shirt I have on my computer looks like: The Pi's are more elegant that atrocious typo was fixed and I made the equals sign an "approximately equal" sign.

I agree that you should use the squiggly lines instead of the equals sign. That way, non math minded people would get it, but it would still be accurate. I was going to suggest that the other day, but I forgot.

You have the best screen name, ever. And very nice work on the design - my wife is a math teacher and we often have discussions about exactly the kind of subject matter in your design. I've lived on earth for nearly half my life, and never once did the public education system take me through your informative diagram regarding earth's orbit. That should be a mandatory science or math class exercise; glad to see it will be featured on torsos soon.
