Take my advice and always dance like no one's watching you ![]()
Rejected because: I know you drew it, but the character is still recognizable as Calvin.

My thoughts exactly. It's still damn cute though.

Okay, I don't know why I can't edit my own post, but I didn't get to finish what I was saying.
I'm not trying to call it out as being a copy. It looks like completely different positions, etc, but just really reminded me of the above comic.

I've always been a fan of Calvin & Hobbes. I know the comic you're both talking about all too well, because it's the basis of this design. I didn't want to make a copy since that'd be just plain wrong - so I put the guy in different dance positions. You can't buy Watterson's work on apparel as he never licensed it out. So this is my little homage to Watterson and all the inspiration he's ever given me

I didn't think it was even close enough to be hit by the rejector. I only noted that because I'm a huge Calvin & Hobbes fan and own like every comic he made.. If I wasn't I wouldn't have even made the connection besides the remote similarity of them both playing LP's.
This is the comic they are saying it is too close to:
I agree. I think this is a bs call. Especially since it took forever to draw and finish (ie. no tracing whatsoever). I changed the character's appearance and movements but that apparently isn't enough for parody/appreciation. I'm a little disappointed with the Woot staff on this one.

Maybe it would make it with a different music source? Though probably best to ask what criteria they used to deem this too similar. =/
Re: Dancing the Night Away
I am bummed it got rejected but if the first thing everyone thinks of when they look at is "hey, isn't that Calvin" it could be boarderingo on copywrite infringment.
Re: Dancing the Night Away
they might have gone towards "it was the idea that was copied" viewpoint. I mean that may be dumb but I guess it could be grounds for rejection.

Well, I did the original art for it, but I think you're right. Just because the first thing people think of when they see it is that it reminds me of Calvin and Hobbes. Which was the whole point to begin with since you can't buy Calvin and Hobbes wear. But it's different art all the same. Oh well, it certainly has bummed me out from submitting anything else for this derby at least
Re: Dancing the Night Away
What if you drew it with the same poses but a different character entirely? Like a monkey or something....
