Re: The 3 Dreamers

This design was inspired by the student uprising in France in May 1968. Many literary and lyrical works were inspired by these events, including the Beatle's "Revolution", Rolling Stone's "Streetfighting Man" and Bertolucci's film "The 3 dreamers". I wanted this design to capture the calm before the storm....how three students originally passive and dreaming of change are then pushed to the point of becoming active participants of change.

The banner reads "Sois Jeune et Tais Toi" which translates to "Be Young and Shut Up", or 'Be Young and Be Quiet". This was inspired by an actual student poster created for the 1968 French uprising.

The signs "change the world' and 'change the constitution' are inspired by the lyrics in the Beatle's 'Revolution' song. There's a palace in the back of the General which is also influenced by the Beatle's lyrics "The time is right for a palace revolution'.

Hope that makes sense.

Yay, in the hotness! I love your art, although this is the first of your shirts to date that I would buy for myself.

Whoa! I saw this comment in the derby forum and figured it was for Derek or James given all the comments left for their designs. I was pleasantly surprised to see it attached to my design. Thanks so much!

Thanks EH! My husband kept telling me to 'keep it simple'. As you can tell...I didn't listen to him entirely. But, I really did try to put only the most relevant elements in to complete the story.

Thanks for the votes thus far. Seems like this one's hit a bit of a brick wall. Time to revolt!

Hmm, I really love your style and I like this design, but it just seems to small on the shirt. It seems like from a distance it would just look like a little colored box.

Have you ever submitted anything to Design by Humans?

It's supposed to be the entire 16x20 template. Perhaps I have it sized too small on my little shirt comp. I own Jimiyo's Pirate shirt and it printed very large on the shirt. I know that some of the details won't be visible from a distance, but hopefully the overall design and contrast of colors would still be visually appealing. Then, up close, people can see more of the story being told.

As for DBH, I have submitted a few designs there. Any of them that have expired, I've moved to my cafepress store. There are a few cubist-style designs in the art-based section, the golfer section and the peacock section.

Thank you for your comment! I appreciate it.

I don't remember this at all! That may be because '68 was so BUSY. I remember MLK being shot in April and all the riots, and I remember the primaries and RFK being shot on live television in June. I guess my age at the time, not being in Europe, and having 2 very emotional events so close to it, all conspired to overshadow the student uprising.

I wonder if this was at the same time as the protests at Berkeley, or if this was the inspiration.

I just looked at your drawing again, and it reminded me of a song by Graham Nash:
We can change the world
Rearrange the world
It's dying
To get better
That was inspired by the Chicago Democratic Convention - also in 1968. I think that was in August, but it could have been July. (I said it was a busy year!)

Hey MJC - So true. 1968 was a busy year. In fact, 1968 - 1970 were really busy with student protests, uprisings etc. The French uprising was in response to the Charles deGaulle government and it does seem that a large crowd of supporters in Berkely came out for a rally in support of these students in June of 1968. There were also protests at Columbia University as well.

My parents were at Kent State and we all know what happened there. (But that happened in 1970, I think.)

I had a feeling that my design would be too much story and too complicated for a shirt. But, I think it will look nice in a poster or print form. So, it wasn't a total waste of time. It took forever, but it's another labor of love, or I wouldn't have done it.

Thanks for the post and the song lyrics. They do work perfectly for this design.

Looks like you may get the red shirt this week!

Re: The 3 Dreamers

the phrase should be "Sois jeune et tais toi." in french, you can't pluralize "toi" to be "tois." it would be "vous," but if you do that you might as well make the whole phrase plural and write "Soyez jeunes et taisez vous." If you are going to use another language on a shirt, make sure you spell it correctly.

Ahhhh.. .carp! You are absolutely right. It is supposed to say Tais Toi! Thank you very much for pointing out my spelling error. I have it correct in my notes about what I wanted to include, but I definitely wrote it wrong on the sketch. It was 3 am. It's not going to be printed this derby, so no worries. But, I do appreciate you catching my mistake. I'll correct it when I revise the image.

(There's also a strange black area on the palace in the background. Seems a few of the tiles 'disappeared' when I saved a .png version of the image. The .svg is correct. That's odd.)

I won't bother revising for this derby as it won't make a difference in the final 3.

But, thanks again for posting a note! I'm going to correct the .svg right now.

Okay. Here's a link to the correct image. French spelling correct and the strange missing sections in the .png file (in the palace, the left student's pant and the right student's shirt) have been corrected. Not going to bother resubbing as it won't make a difference for the final. But, in case anyone wants to see the correct design.
