The Pica Republic

Motto: "Lorem Ipsum Dolor Sit Amet", which roughly translates to "This is a typography joke".

Ethnic groups: 26 lower case letters, 26 upper case letters, 10 digits, various punctuation

National anthem: Who Shot the Serif?

Size of country: 12 points

Most common natural disaster: comma splices

National Sport: watching quick brown foxes jump over the lazy dogs

Emblem: As the indigenous people are quite athletic, Picans are very passionate about their national sport. Thus, the fox and the dog are national symbols, be they quick, brown, lazy, or none of the above.

Thanks! Some people should recognize the fox from last week. When I drew him for the Summer derby it was basically a throw-away entry; I'd drawn him freehand so the lines were quite rough and shaky. I was really surprised at how well it did.

This fox has been done more carefully using the pen tool. I hope that's a good thing!

What language is that?

Frdmstang wrote:What language is that?

Lorem ipsum is actually standard filler text. It is a modified form of a latin passage. It's used in typography, font and layout design because it approximates letter distribution in the English language, thus appearing natural on a page, while not containing any comprehensible meaning (which would distract the viewer from the font/layout).

The entire design is a typography joke.

Are you the same person that had the fox with the hot sun for the summer derby? That was the only design I actually voted for last week! I loved it, and was very sad to see it not place higher. I liked the summer theme fox better than this one, but I really really like that fox, so you get my vote again this week.

Just my 2 cents, but keep submitting that fox if people overlook you again. I really want a shirt with it!

Yep, that's me! The fox in the summer derby was actually drawn really quickly - if you looked at it closely, you'd see the lines become thick and thin in strange places. It was rather sloppy, actually. It was such a simple and sparse design, I had no idea it would do as well as it did. This fox was redrawn more carefully.

If I don't make it this derby (knock on wood) I'll definitely use the fox again, but I'll probably cool it for a while. People get enough heat for reusing elements (case study: derekfilley's gas-mask guy) that I don't think I could survive using the fox three weeks in a row. I really appreciate your support!

It's close to real Latin; based on a excerpt from a text by Cicero, which read "...qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet..."

Yeah, the filler text is descended from an actual latin text. The wikipedia entry on Lorem Ipsum includes a longer excerpt of the standard text, as well as an excerpt from the original text and its translation.

Ba-dum-bump.

Considering I am addicted to ellipses, I got the joke right away when I read what you wrote and thought about sentences and
silly grammatical rules that no one seems to follow unless they're really obsessed with writing and words and all that good stuff
(which some people don't consider to be good stuff since they ignore it all of the time) and I would add a comma splice or two
in here but just doing a full-on run-on is too much work for my brain when I spend most of my time correcting things like this... {INHALE}

Oh Dear eHalcyon,
You take offence where absolutely none was intended. I REALLY, sincerely am behind this design and was not throwing about accusations re the Mini Cooper wings. It's just that you can't throw a Kleenex in my country without hitting a Mini (usually the old Brit. ones). Mini is just so much a part of our cultural landscape that I was responding out of my experience. I can easily see how an American may not be so familiar with this element of design.
Sorry if I offended and I'll be even sorrier if this does not win!

No no, you didn't offend me, and I didn't think it was an accusation at all! Someone else mentioned it looked like a flight patch. The wings are just a common element in heraldry, emblem design and whatnot.

Okay - another story of dealing with "know-it-all" teenagers: 1st level class, I'm introducing picas and points (yeah - Pie Ka) and have a lovely 9th grade lass assure me that it is pronounced Pee Ka. I respond that I am certain that it is Pie Ka and that Pee Ka actually describes a mental disorder in which the person eats inappropriate things, i.e. glass, dirt, metal . . . (my hubby is a shrink - I'm a word geek, but there are limits :D)

She was undaunted and, strangely enough, she did not return for the next level class . . . perhaps she is somewhere eating rocks????

You're not the only one. It's way too cute and child-ish for me but I can understand why it's at the top. This is shirt.woot. There's a different standard/taste here than at other sites like Design By Humans, threadless, and etc.

@GF - Ah, that makes much more sense! Yeah, I suspect that the phrase would be used in typing classes. It's a rather popular pangram.

@sfsnyder - Thanks for sharing that story!

@Eastaer and hmmxkrazee - I believe most would have voted for the cute factor, though I believe a few voters would have appreciated the humour as well, given the comments made. tandusi above summarizes what I was going for rather concisely. I guess I should have paid more attention in English class or typing class or Latin (well I never took Latin) but I have no clue what the big joke with this shirt is.... I read the first post about what the words translate to but I don't see how anyone is going to understand what that means in the "real world", and the fact that I’m the only person posting confusion kinda makes me feel really dumb.... oh well at least I’m good at math! ;)

Re: The Pica Republic

@SaritaBeth - I hope your confidence isn't misplaced! Thank-you for the support.

@Mootsfox - Thanks!

@barabajagle - I know there are plenty of straight men who would be comfortable wearing "cute" stuff as well. I was targeting two demographics in this design, and I was aware that it was risky because I could end up alienating both sides. Hopefully the risk was worth it.

@judycallgirl - The dog just woke up.

@cheer4vols - the "translation" in the description isn't a real translation. The motto isn't a real Latin phrase - there actually isn't any meaning in it at all. The phrase is actually from a standard piece of filler text commonly used in typography. If you're interested, you can read a bit about it on Wikipedia.

I like this design and it would certainly deserve to be in the top 4 if it met the requirements. I say that because there is no indication on this shirt that this is a place. Anyone who hadn't read the description (Even someone who knows latin) would be unable to tell you that this is supposed to be a country. I fully appreciate the joke of it and the amount of time that must have been spent on it, but it honestly does not satisfy the derby stipulations. This is just for your consideration. Thanks.

@sigaru - I'm not sure what you mean about zeroes.

@DagmarDobbs - Did they use "Lorem Ipsum" in typing classes? the Lorem Ipsum text is commonly used filler text.

I think sigaru was referring to your first post, how you said there were 9 digits. Are zeroes extinct or is it merely a base-nine numeral system that occupies the land?

Anyway, thank-you for your support.

Out of curiosity, are you in England? I'm not American, but a bit farther north.

I am an ex-pat living in Geneva, Switzerland. You really wouldn't believe the number of Minis here. Minis, Smart cars and Vespas cover about 90% of what is on the road here. A Honda Civic would look like an Escalade in this country.
Good luck on the Derby...if it doesn't win are you planning on reproducing it somewhere else because I'd been up for that.

@ccsprinter11 - I think most people would be able to tell you that it is an emblem for some place. I think my design fits the requirements just fine, though I'll understand if the rejectionator feels differently. Thanks for your concern.

@llonvent and daedalusknight - OH. Well, that's embarassing. I've fixed the description. e_e

@curb1510 - Canadian, you got it. I haven't made any plans to produce failed designs elsewhere, but I'll keep it in mind. Perhaps at some point I'll set up something on Cafepress or another similar site.

If you do set up designs on another site, let me know! I want that fox with the hot sun above him. I still like that design.

Also, I think if the rejectionator was going to rejectionate you, it would have been done already, rather than sitting in the top 4 slots for several days now. I would say you have a good chance of getting this one into a weekend slot!

The design is good, simple and printable. Am somewhat confused with the relation between the name and the design, others seem to have made the connection a little clearer. Is it 'Pica' like the sound made by the pokemon? Or what is 'pica'?

@Mitamasan and anyone else who might want to be on "the list" - to be safe, you should probably PM me so I remember, although I would likely check this thread anyway since it's my first ever fogged design. If I ever open a store somewhere, I'll put a notification in my signature too, so you could just keep your eyes peeled!

@gravitybound - thanks for the kind words. I'll keep your suggestions in mind in case I don't make it to print.

@narkus - I think you're the first commenter who prefers the dog to the fox! I'm glad you like the puppy. Hmm, if I had known of this alternate definition of "pica" I would have considered a different name.

@rglee129 - First letter basis! It's nice to have you in the fog, r, even though you kicked out my favourite design in this derby. Your sunny outlook sure helped you get up here fast! I don't layer shirts though, despite being Canadian.

@mlovesr - e is very happy!

@vnebel - Didn't even think of pikachu, hah! I think a few people haven't made the connection either, though most commenters have it figured out. The entire design is a typography joke:

1. The emblem depicts the classic pangram "the quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog" (with some aesthetic modifications like having the fox be more orange).
2. The "motto" is actually standard filler text.
3. The name of the country refers to the pica as a unit of measurement common in typography.

Speaking of layering... I don't know if it makes a difference, but this shirt should be very breathable if/when printed. I cut away as much as I could in the print-ready file so no colour overlaps another.

Hey eHalcyon, I was actually about to post pretty much exactly what you wrote over on my shirt's thread over here. I would say its been about 50/50 from what i can see in terms of who's been on top in the fog. CWarrington's page has us and Youbetchacan neck and neck right now, with Sublimican out in front by about 30(ish) still.

Good luck to you as well! Looking forward to seeing how everything pans out this weekend!

Oooh... this will be especially interesting since Youtbetchucan has just fallen out of the hotness after so long. I have no idea how SDS keeps estimates, but I wonder if it might be off a bit because the fogged entries haven't been dominating the hotness as much as they do in most derbies? Or maybe I've just been noticing it more in this derby because I'm more interested in the outcome than usual.

Since the three of us are so close right now, do you think a three-way tie would be possible? That would be amazing, because I really want Fantasma... XP

It fell out of the fog or out of the hotness?

The way I understand it, for the fogged shirts, SDS looks at the hotness ratings for those 4 shirts every three hours and uses them to add to the vote totals. If a shirt isn't in the hotness but is in the fog, it inputs the highest possible vote total the shirt could have but still be out of the fog (... so really the lowest fog total). As a result the totals are usually a bit inflated because it would only be perfect if each shirt was always one vote away from the hotness.

Sorry, I meant the hotness. Edited my original comment so as not to confuse anyone.

Perhaps I'm mistaken, but fogged entries in most derbies I've participated in seem to always be at the top of the hotness. The fact that we've all been dropping in and out of the hotness may actually have a profound effect on the estimates, if your understanding is correct. It's probably a bit more complicated than that though (i.e. not just looking every three hours but keeping a constant tab on the hotness and doing some magic calculations with that info).

This is well executed but I don't get the association with theme.

I get all the jokes and appreciate them, but I just wish that the fox was actually jumping for one, and two, that the dog was actually lazy. To me the dog looks like a young spry puppy who won't quit howling.

This shirt has all the elements of a graphic design joke (a fox and a dog and lorem ipsum and the name the pica republic) but I just don't think they're delivered well.

@starryeyedsky - I hope you (and your husband!) get to purchase the shirt, though things are looking grim.

@invisiblecrazy - well, there were those two raven shirts from the text as art derby... but thanks for the support!

@magicelso - thanks for the compliments. I actually think the opposite of you - that I did fairly well for hitting the theme, but my execution was only so-so.

@pennglendinning - The fox is in mid-jump. I don't think my puppy looks so spry, though he could certainly be more lazy. Someone told me that he looks like he just woke up and is a bit surprised. I agree that the execution could have been much better, but I'm not the greatest artist - I'm working at it. I complete disagree that the fox looks like a flying squirrel though. No way.

Thanks for the comments everyone! This is my first fogged entry and I appreciate the support the design has received. Whether I get a shiny new "So Close" badge on SDS come Sunday or, by some miracle or fluke I manage to place, I'm definitely happy with (and a little surprised at) how I've done this derby. Thank-you, democratic republic of woot!

heh, I meant the position of his legs, not his coloration or anything . . . sorry for the poor phrasing. I'd expect a fox's legs in mid jump to be stretched out in front and behind . . . not to the side. ANYWAYS, kudos on the fog.

Congrats eHalcyon!!! The worst you could possibly have done now is 4th place, which is pretty impressive indeed. While I certainly hope you place 3rd or better so I can get the shirt, congratulations are in order either way!

On a side note, this is the first derby ever where I have felt the top 4 actually deserved to be there. The top 4 shirts this week are my top 4 picks as well. Either the designs were just above and beyond the others and it was obvious to everyone, or Woot is implanting thoughts in my head telekinetically...I hope it's the first one.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the kind words. I've noticed many of you have been commenting on yesterday's and today's shirt that you're waiting for mine. I've got to say that it's really touching and I feel quite honoured.

That said, if Youbetchucan makes third (and I really do think it will), I think it would be better if you guys didn't post too many "oh noes!" comments. rg is an amazing artist and his cheery country deserves to print tomorrow as much as the Pica Republic - it probably deserves it more, considering how quickly he rose through ranks!

Whatever happens, I'll make up some sort of list this weekend with the names of the people who have commented positively here, as well as those who have PM'd me. If I set up a store in the future with these old designs, I'll PM you guys so you can give me your money.

I posted "oh noes" earlier on this thread, but not on the other shirt threads, since I'm concerned that the Pica Republic shirt that I want won't be made. It wasn't a reflection on the other shirts' merits. It was just my initial reaction when I checked after midnight ("please please please, click ..."). It would be bad etiquette to discuss other shirts on a particular shirt's thread, unless it was somehow related to the subject. Youbetchucan is a good design, and I even voted for it when it first appeared.

Sigh, so close. I feel like I dated the Pica Republic shirt for a week, getting ready for the big reward at the end, and now it wants to be "just friends".

I just learned about the possibility of a do-over derby, and when it happens, I'm sure a 4th place winner will be in that derby. There has also been an "editor's choice" period in the past where even more entries get printed. So there are multiple chances for Pica Republic to be printed.

Hey everyone,

Thanks for all the comments and support. I'm honoured to have come in fourth behind three wonderful artists and their equally great designs. And wow, it was a close race.

If I set up a store in the future, I'll PM everyone who has given any indication of interest, be it in the form of a positive comment or PM'd me directly. If you gave me an email, I will email you as well. I'll probably also go through older designs of mine and see if there are others who might want a PM there.

Please keep in mind that, at the earliest, this design will not be available for about two months. Other factors may also cause the date to be pushed back, ranging from the do-over derby to my own laziness in setting up a shop.
