Amazingly illustrated and a great use of color. However, I think facial expression alone is enough to eliminate the use of text here. It really draws away from the design aspect, not to mention that nearly every word in the sentence is inexplicably capitalized.

I know. It makes it funnier... well I think anyway. and it adds character to the text. Bill Waterson does it a lot in calvin and hobbs, which I love. thanks for your comments!

I know this is a tad hypocritical coming from me, but this is a lot of incidental text, isn't it? Seems like it sort of tips out of incidental at some point and becomes a full-on slogan.

That's not to say I don't like the shirt. I'm just questioning the limits of the stop-sign rule for future reference. This would seem to set a precedent if allowed to go through to the end.

I was actually wondering myself if it would qualify, but most of the shirt revolves around the illustration. the text could not work on its own, thus it can not be a slogan shirt. thanks for your comments!

From what I've heard from other people who received emails, they weren't told specifically which design(s) had been selected by woot. "Ooh shiny" is an excellent contender though... and I can definitely see that one blowing away the competition.

The stop sign rule seems to be another example of a rule loosely-defined enough to allow woot to keep shirts that they think will make money but which any independent arbiter would assess as breaking the rule, much like the "we won't print anything unoriginal" rule, or the "this is too close to a shirt we've already printed" rule. The Derby doesn't seem to be about a fair competition but about woot getting to print 3 shirts that will make a bunch of money. Personally, I think the contest could be both, but that might require a bit of effort and a LOT more transparency in the rejection decisions.

The emergency is that they just bludgeoned some poor schmo into a stupor and will be in serious trouble. I hope this fogs and places, because this was made for my brother in law. As fast as this one has climbed it still has a chance to break the record for latest submitted winner. Where's the award for that? Keep the votes coming, and prove the "Best Loser" wrong.

klswoot

quality posts: 0 Private Messages klswoot

The "Best Loser" awards have actually helped bring attention to some designs. Remember that Edgar received a BL for his amoeba and it ended up coming in 3rd in the motherhood derby. And, just last week the pixel giraffe got a BL and it also placed.

So...hopefully DSladek's BL award will bring additional attention to the design and get it to the top 3. The extra publicity can't hurt.

Maybe we should treat these 'early Best Loser" awards as 'Best non-fogged" entries and then change them to a BestLoser when the derby actually concludes.

Here's hoping that DSladek actually isn't a best loser....but the best winner instead!

It's too bad this one wasn't submitted a little sooner; it would totally be owning the fog right now if it was. I might have been tempted to hold on to this design, and hope that it would still be applicable to the theme of a future derby. I'm not really sure what the rules are on "re-submissions." This is definitely winning material.

Although woot sometimes allows minor changes to the print-ready file (i.e. removal of the sixth finger on a hand in Cho's Risky Business), the removal of text is too big a change. People voted on a design with text, so woot won't print it without the text if this entry manages to place.

Good luck in these last few hours, ds. I've seen the fogged entries in the hotness a lot though, so you really have your work cut out for you.
