Derby #65: Shirt as Costume

...and then I was like BOOO!

I really like it, but it's not incidental text.

Rejected because: I really like it, but it's not incidental text.

Won't you please help us find a home for these poor alien larvae. For just ten dollars you can make it possible for one of these poor extraterrestrials to enjoy a normal life.

Enjoy, and thanks for voting!

Nope.

It is blatantly obvious that the text in this design took 5 seconds to make versus the several hours I put into drawing/coloring/rendering the alien, which is the FOCAL POINT. The text only compliments the design. It is not the main idea. Tgentry would calls this "plussing". If you haven't read his help thread, you should. I recommend it to everyone as a starting point.

My vision for this shirt was that the person wearing the shirt could use it as a "conversation starter" (<--- hehe) at a halloween party/celebration. The joke was supposed to be the fact that the alien is the life of the party - drink in hand, telling stories and what not.

I ROFLMAO when I thought of the caption, so there's no way I could sleep at night if I excluded it from the design. I'm sorry you don't like it. Maybe a "male" would enjoy the shirt more. ;)

Ok.. so Im getting confused on the idea of "incidental" text

A speech bubble is hardly incidental..

just looking at the rejected items that say "not incidental text".. they are far less important to the shirts theme than this one..
take away the text and its a chestburster with a teacup, which makes no sense.. take away the teacup, and its just like two other shirts that were submitted.

Im not trying to knock the OPs effort.. Im just getting a bit put off by the application of woots rules each week.

Not to mention you wait till the 4th day of voting to reject it. It's not like it was down out the bottom somewhere. Seems pretty obvious to me!

Incidental text means the shirt would get the same point across without the text AND that it's not a major design element. It appears that woot didn't think you met these criteria.

Thanks, but It would be pointless this late in the game. If woot had rejected it early enough for me to still have a shot, then I would, but apparently they like smashing people's dreams of winning t-shirt contests, as well as, screwing them over by not giving them a fair amount of time to resubmit.

There really should be a time limit for how long after submission a design can still be rejected.

Actually, before rejecting something from the fog, the rejectionator calls a meeting of the woot staff. Since your design fogged over the weekend, they couldn't hold a meeting until Monday.

I don't think it's irrelevant at any point. I thought it was something you should know before you start accusing woot of "screwing you over". In fact, they have a judicious process in place to deal with fogged entries. At least they got to it on Monday. Other entries have been rejected from the fog as late as Tuesday afternoon and with much more controversial rejection reasons.

Also, it's not Ann.

Originally I would have considered the text bubble NOT to be incidental text, but Woot let it go before. Just one more inconsistent wrench thrown into the derby rules, I guess.

David, you could have resubmitted it wthout the speech bubble and still had a shot. Monday entries have won plenty of times before, especially fixed resubs of rejected entries.

And yeah... I don't think Woot is out to get you. You're not the first to be rejected from the fog. Derek for one has had it happen to him plenty.

If you read the rules for the Derby you pointed to, they're slightly different than just "no incidental text" ...

incidental text is allowed as part of an illustration, but no slogan shirts

Sounds a little more forgiving to me. And what you're pointing to seems to be allowed as it's no slogan and is part of the illustration. Just my opinion though...

Eh? The rules this week allow incidental text as well.

Incidental text only. A nametag or logo is fine as one element of a larger design. "This Shirt Is My Pirate Costume" is not.

So again, no slogan shirts, but text as part of a larger design would be ok. The question is, are speech balloons acceptable? Before the Emergency derby I would have guessed no, but dsladek's LARPing shirt made it through. That's why I think it strange that this design was rejected. But it's woot's call. Meh.

wait. are you saying you are confused as to woot not making sense and having no real rule system? silly silly boy you have been here long enough to know there are no rules in woot, just whims. their whim this round is not to say "hey this alien thing is WAY overdone" and leave it at that. no. they want to baffle the masses by saying the speech bubble is also an issue which is moot. cool huh!

Hey, it's my $10. If woot doesn't want it, that's fine by me.

It just boggles the mind that they would reject something that's doing so well and would obviously sell out for such an arbitrary reason. I have no idea what their line of resoning was on this one.

The only difference a rejection makes is it can be resubmitted to another derby (assuming it fits the theme) without being rejected as a resub.

hmmm......I'm not a designer, so I don't pretend to know about these things......but it would seem to me that if woot rejects the design, that they would also be rejecting the rights to that design.

I understand a contract is signed beforehand, so that's not reality. Just too bad for the artist.
