It's in the upper right corner. I have two flatscreens at work, one I keep bright and one I keep dark. Though it's a bit tougher, I can see the shirt on my dark monitor, so I think you must have a really dark monitor.

Black shirt. Let me post a brighter version. Disregard the design colors and brightness changing, this is just to show the placement on darker monitors:

I think it will come across, but then I might be biased. Just putting together a red hat, blue suspenders, and a thick mustache is enough to conjure up Mario in most people's minds. Add a couple of Mario Bros colored mushrooms, big nose, and distinctive ear and I don't think many people will miss the point. Only one way to find out though.

Now I'm glad I took that pointless art class, cause I can appreciate all of your entries from artisitc and game perspectves. I think the Mario one is the only one I'd want to buy however. (I did my projects on Rembrandt) Good job colliding the two worlds.

Buy two and fold a shirt and frame it; if you really must have it on your wall.

LOOK. I'm not a big supporter of the derby-giant-entry-ers that usually dominate these things; I like to see a new designer up there every now and then.

BUT. I'm stupid. You're smart. I was wrong. You were right. You're the best. I'm the worst. You're very good-looking. I'm not very attractive. You win...well, with this design everyone wins! GG.

Great design. I'm not a fan that's it's too subtle.. I don't think a lot of people would get it. I wouldn't buy it or wear it, but I think it deserves to be in the fog for the pure talent put into it. Great job!

I am new and gonna get into the derbies, I am testing out the field right now. What keeps us safe in these derbies? What is copyright and what is not? I see a bunch of shirts on here that are just crazy and would get lots of people in trouble, for example:

How does this design by tgentry differ much from this?

I'd say the biggest thing to keep you safe is to avoid text completely unless it's required for the derby theme since a lot of shirts with text rely on the text to be appealing. If you're confused about copyright, you can always check the web or ask your friends for their opinions.

In my opinion, this shirt differs enough from Rembrandt's original in that it's computerized and that Mario is the subject of choice. tgentry also added those little mushrooms on the bottom to add to the parody. If you change an original piece enough, you can pull it off as a parody rather than something that's just stolen.

No prob. There are also a couple of threads with info on what to stay away from and tips on how to submit successful shirts (I think that one's by tgentry, coincidentally). I don't have the links on me, but I'm sure you can easily find them!

1. It's hand drawn for starters. If I had done a line for line trace or livetraced a photo then I might run into copyright issues with whoever owns this photo. Hand drawing avoids that problem.
2. There's a ton of differences from the original: overalls, mushrooms, hat, tabletop, less hair, bigger nose, Marioesque ear, bigger mustache, etc... not to mention the differences inherit from handdrawing, such as differences in the size of head, shoulders, arms etc.
3. I didn't include any registered trademarks from Mario. I didn't copy any art from the game. I used object and color association to link him to Mario. Also it's not just an image of Mario with nothing added to it, it's a parody of him as an older man.
4. The Rembrandt portrait style really is a style, not just a single image. He did dozens of self portraits in this style, and many other artists copied that style. Someone posted above to a portrait he did that they thought it was inspired by because it's nearly identical, only he's younger. In actuality I had about 3 images of his up when I was doing it, but this image was the main inspiration. Because it's a style and not just an single image, that makes avoiding copyright issues easy.
5. This painting is very old. Parodying images that are hundreds of years old poses less copyright issues than working off of something modern.

Based on what is getting tossed out [of the fog] and fought for, I'd say this is somewhere in either 2nd or third. But still vote more guys, this only needs to hold on for a bit over 15 hours or so before the game is called.

Not very often do I see a shirt and say "I will definately buy that" but this is one of those shirts. I like how it is very subtle, you have to really look to see it is Mario and the mushrooms add a nice touch. I also like the shirt color, there aren't many brown shirts these days.

Thanks to everyone who voted for and commented on this and my other designs. Also good luck to all the top 5 entries. It's a double edged sword being in the fog with really well done work. It's tough competition, but at least if you don't get printed you lost to a good design. Best of luck.

I'm a TGentry fan from way back in the 'chop contest days & I think this is awesome. I'm sorry I didn't vote for it, but I didn't look at the derby until it was finalist time so I missed out on voting. But, I didn't miss out on buying. This is the first shirt that I have bought.
