Love the illustration, but I am a little confused why the fisher appears to have his/her feet in the water.

So is everyone else. I dunno. Makes sense to me. It balances the design out a little and maybe he's getting hypothermia, but it makes about as much sense as the fish, right? I mean... where'd they get the doughnut? ![]()

it's art. and a different existance. to question why feet are in cold water but not be bothered by fish that apparently use fins as arms and have the ability to pyramid themselves is unfortunate.
jamie, i support the feet in water. in your world, it works.

ahuhu! Thank you. We can also say that the guy isn't human. He's got a blue face and strange fashion sense. Maybe he's invulnerable to cold. Although... the blue face could be the hypothermia setting in...

Wonderful. I love all the patterns in this design.
Re: Stalemate
This is well-composed. I was just wondering, as it bothers me just a bit (not enough to not vote, however ;), but the stripes around the big fish's mouth, near the corner, seems out-of-step or something. Like a stripe is miscoloured or something. But that's just me.
Nice job, Boots! ![]()

It's true. The stripes are out of whack. To me that looked interesting, but I can see how it could bug you. I think maybe sometimes I put too many imperfections in my designs. Someone needs to regulate me.

Thanks for the vote. I draw comics, so I wanted to incorporate that more in my designs.

I'll join the others who complimented your patterns. They are so creative and they really make your designs stand out.
Re: Stalemate
I too struggled with feet in the water. It is an instinctive thing to consider that the water must be cold. But what do we know of this alternate existence? We know what Boots provides us with. This is art and the realities we know have no place here. I had to read through pre-derby comments and the ones on this page before I could come to accept this myself.
Now I serve notice to other viewers here to consider only the art.
What do you get? Well you ought to get an appreciation for the concept, the colors, and the overall cuteness. This is a T-shirt contest and I rate it as wearable and enjoyable.
BootsBoots wrote:So is everyone else. I dunno. Makes sense to me. It balances the design out a little and maybe he's getting hypothermia, but it makes about as much sense as the fish, right? I mean... where'd they get the doughnut?
The weird thing about the feet to me is that once you've suspended disbelief on why they have a doughnut, it would still make more sense for the big fish to bite his (her?) feet and drag him into the water.
It looks good now, but I also feel it would add a little to the design if they were more unaware of each other. The big fish seems to be completely ignoring the worm but I think it would add a little more humor if he was going for the worm as the person went for the doughnut.
Re: Stalemate
You always use the strangest color combinations, but they somehow always work really well. Great job.
Re: Stalemate
Simultaneously being a BootsBoots entry AND a donut themed shirt, I can't NOT vote for this.
I really enjoyed this when it was first on your blog and am happy to vote for it now.. the fisher reminds me of shyguy from mario.. GMV

Heh.. it always kills me how people try to make too much sense of fantasy... and yet nobody realizes the whole scenario is impossible!

BootsBoots wrote:So is everyone else. I dunno. Makes sense to me. It balances the design out a little and maybe he's getting hypothermia, but it makes about as much sense as the fish, right? I mean... where'd they get the doughnut?
they got the doughnut from the other fisher trying to catch them with it. duh.
haha! clever ahuhu

That might have been good too. I tried to make it kind of the opposite of that. Neither is fooled by the bait, but both sides are optimistic that the other side will be fooled. Any minute now.

Hmmm, I shoulda drawn that. But methinks I shall sit out this derby.

Re: Stalemate
I already told you my feelings on this, but it wasn't an official declaration so now I shall say - YAY! I love your design and your fabulous-as-usual use of colour. GMV, of course.
Might I just add that I love how much this one is being discussed as being nonsensical. Perhaps all of this scrutiny means it will print. Keep on talkin', people. Woo!
I am confused on how this is in the fog. it absolutely makes no sense? The design that is. Is it cold? Worms are for fresh water? Why would his feet be dangling in the water? I guess you have ALOT of friends to call up and vote for you.
Re: Stalemate
Great job. GMV... that's if I had purchased an item so as to have earned a vote.
I'm a little jealous - we had the same theme - but you definitely executed better. Loved the Dr. Sues style.
Re: Stalemate
Boots, you have such a querky style. It is instantly recognizable! I really like the girl's face.
Hey boots, I understand if you ignore this, because frankly... you do just fine and your stuff looks great! there's just a few little things i'm kinda bothered by here. first, the shadow on the big fish kind of throws me off. and also, it feels like the ripples are placed REALLY weirdly. like, the view lends itself to be a sort of "cross-section" which makes the surface ripples appear halfway down into the water. I understand that its a weird perspective, but i feel like there isn't much distinction between water, ice, and air. each individual element looks great however. =]
Again, not looking to be uppity because i could never do this, just offering a humble voters opinion.
Re: Stalemate

Ahh... I see what you mean. I didn't intend them to be surface ripples. It's still a sideview, but they do look like they could almost be surface ripples but the perspective is wrong. I didn't notice that. And I would never ignore a critique. I appreciate them.
And thanks once again for the comments everyone.

I know how to help this design win! Every winning entry has some horrible controversy! Therefore, I shall insult BootsBoots and say her design is uninspired and displays an extreme lack of talent! After the ensuing controversy, BootsBoots will be a shoo-in for 1st place.
Sadly, I just can't do it. This design is just so great on so many levels I can't say anything bad about it, and BootsBoots is one of the most artistic, talented and witty designers on Woot (and she makes her designs into wallpaper for me!). I hope you win despite the lack of controversy! ![]()
Re: Stalemate
I dig your style and the colors you've used here Boots. Alas, I have another annoying nitpick (sorry!): I feel like the big killer fish needs side fins, even if they're little stumpy unrealistic ones. His buddies all have them!
Re: David Lynch, his films drive me absolutely batty. Possibly because whenever I've watched them it has been in the context of a film class where I was forced to try to make some sort of narrative sense out of their utter lack of coherence.

Aww, man... I wanted controversy! Maybe we could start arguing about David Lynch? Here is my stance: His films are for the most part not good because the plot (if there is one) is so buried under weird symbolism (if you can call it that because most of the time it seems like it's not really that symbolic of anything at all). Mulholland Drive was an exception, though. I really liked that one. Wait. Dammit. I'm no good at starting controversy. I need to pick a side and not budge.

A group of friends and I started watching Lost Highway. I went upstairs for a few minutes, and didn't even realize they'd switched the movie to Plan 9 from Outer Space until it got real campy.

ahuhu! Lost Highway... the only saving grace was the use of Marilyn Manson, I think. You probably missed that part though:
BIZARRENESS

I disagree, regulation would take away from your style, which I think is fantastic. The elements in the design that a few people have pointed out as problematic (feet in water, stripes, and so on) are pretty much the opposite of that. I think those things add to it, making it more original, unique, and definitely fun.
And, either way, it is said that imperfection is perfection, right? ;D
All in all, well done! I wouldn't change a thing. This is one of the only shirts that I'm hoping will actually print, I'd love to have one. GMV!

Mulholland Drive...a DO NOT GO TO THE BATHROOM OR BLINK YOUR EYES MOVIE, you will miss the one key second that ties it all together. But you are right...this movie was the exception. The cool thing is every time you watch it you get a fresh AH HA! moment.
Lets drill into this idea of you having a network of mindless friends. Who is your main robot vendor? Who is your media consultant for the brainwashing material? Does water boarding ever come into play? Do you use David Lynch movies to fry the personality before indoctrinating the subjects?
Raisin Cookies.
Do you ever utilize subliminals in your posts? Is it true that diverting from meaningful discussion allows for better drink prices?

Well, the fisherman is really somewhat of an "everyman" character and his strange attire is representative of the freedom of the individual to exist solely as himself in a bizarre world, free from the teachings of reason and science and religious ideals. The water is symbolic of the "sea of knowledge" and by dipping his (or her) feet in, the fisherman will ultimately be distracted by the cold, leaving him unable to see what's truly going on in the world around him. It's really somewhat of an existential piece, you unsophisticated swine.

You're sitting at home in your cheerleading skirt again aren't you? I know you're just in it for the sweet-ass megaphone. I don't blame you. ;)

LOL if I had a cheerleading skirt.... well, I'm not going to go there. XD
but the megaphone is sweet... I want to let everyone know what 3 to vote for in the end ;)
Re: Stalemate
This is a crazy derby! Most derbies you can pretty much figure out which one is where...it seems the only one that is for sure in this one is "They Were Delicious." I am so hoping this one makes it! Based on the fact ramyb just fell out and the otters are back, I think there is a good chance you get printed here Boots!!!

This. I get suspension of disbelief. But if I look at the shirt and say "what is going on in this picture?" it looks like the person wants to hook the fish to eat them and the fish want to hook the person to eat him/her.
But the fish can eat the person anytime it wants, since the person is sitting in the water. It doesn't really seem like a design decision, more like an oversight. Even in a fish-can-handle-donuts cartoon world, it still doesn't make sense.
Bought a print.
