This took so long... also, my desktop hard drive fried and so I had to do this on my laptop, which is something like 5 years old and extremely slow.

It's so difficult to color a bunch of different things with only six colors. Hopefully I succeeded somewhat.

I really like this, and would probably wear this one myself. Nice composition, colors, cute animals.

But one things that puzzles me... an ox/bovine creature is in the lead of a race? Even in front of the tiger!

Cute sheep and monkey especially,(though I don't like the sheep's pointed feet - which the rabbit also has - the rest of the animals have somewhat more detailed feet so it looks out of place that those 2 have cone nubs for feet).

Still, overall I like this.

Edit: It just dawned on me... it is the year of the ox... ok I get it now.

Vote!

Re: Inspired by The Amazing Race

I really like this concept, but I really wish the animals weren't cutesy... This shirt would be so much more epic if the animals looked more dynamic and intense. I mean, it's suppose to be an "amazing" race @_@
Some of the animals (particularly in the front) look like they're very rigid, which is probably what's bothering me the most.
I will give you props for doing it on a red shirt Also, I think you did a pretty good job with coloring the animals using only 6 colors.

There is nothing in this design to show that the animals are racing, nor that the race is amazing for any reason.

Thanks for all the comments! :D

This picture is based on the Chinese zodiac race - the order of the animals represents the order they placed in the race, which determined which animal you are based on your year of birth. ;) Pretty amazing, huh?

The shirt looks pretty cool. Although not something I would wear, I like your take on the show title. I wish there was more of a theme tho... like a finish line or something to convey its actually a race and not a stampede. As usual, great artwork. GMV for great color choices

Great take on the Amazing Race, basing it on the Chinese zodiac legend.

Just some criticisms: someone pointed out that it seems rigid which I can see. In addition, I do not like the eyes. It's all the same and I feel they lack emotion. Well, the rooster is a bit different. Still do not like it's eye though.

Nonetheless, I want to reiterate that the concept is great. Btw, wasn't there a cat in the legend but it lost? haha

kylemittskus wrote:There is nothing in this design to show that the animals are racing, nor that the race is amazing for any reason.

Actually, this design is based on the Chinese legend that explains how the order of the Chinese zodiac was determined. I was able to ascertain the inspiration just from the thumbnail and realized that, yes, they are racing. I think the story behind it inherently makes it an "amazing" race.

Fun tidbit - the rat is first in the zodiac; it won the race by cheating (riding on the ox and jumping ahead at the last second).

Constructive criticism for Seki:

The idea is not particularly original in that it is directly taken from a Chinese tale, but the same could be said of tgentry's Sun Wukong, and at least you gave credit to the original source this time, unlike with that Dumbo design (come on - that was Dumbo). And much like with Ramy's alphabet mythology design, the style doesn't do much for me given the epic-ness that it's supposed to depict.

I also take issue with the proportions of the animals - the pig, chicken and rabbit are enormous, especially compared to the dragon and that tiny little monkey.

There's also the fact that the order is not correct - the rooster should be ahead of the dog. You could say that the race isn't over and the rooster can still catch up, but still - wearing this would be just asking for people to point that out. It's also difficult to say if the dragon is beating the snake as it should, but I can give that it's a close race. The dragon looks to be a smidgen in the lead.

Oh, and the ox doesn't really look like it's running. Then again, I've never seen an ox run. Maybe it's an awkward process (though speedy!).

Despite all that, believe me when I say that I really like this design. The biggest thing for me is the mismatch between style and subject matter. If you could rework it with less "cute" and more "that is freaking incredible", I'd be on board.

I hope you can take that as constructive criticism rather than the usual bashing you get.

It doesn't happen week after week. "Stalemate" was probably a fluke (reportedly a very slow weekend for whatever reason) and besides that there's only been one other such situation (Sunset 3.0 from Pixel Grid). Out of all the derby prints, I'm pretty sure you can consider those two to be anomalies.

There are plenty of other things you can say are screwed up about the derby though.

Ok, on its own, had I never been here before, I might think this is great. It is well done and colored nicely so on and so on. But look at all these designs on here. While a lot of them really lack solid artist mastership, I do at least see creativity and a level of risk and trying something different. They have the ideas but not the professional skills. I honestly thought you were the same person that just took 3rd with Basic Training. Same color shirt, MORE animals, SAME eyes, same backlighting. Its sad because people seem to be eating it up over and over. And as business goes, as long as they demand, you supply. Maybe thats why this style is being over done.

But seriously, and this isn't just you but this sparked it but people should look at the latest winners and say "I'm going to do something different". I know it wasn't absolute that Basic Training won until today but seriously. This looks like the sequel. Like the tiger's tail lit the circus ablaze and the fire spread into the local zoo where all the animals are now running for their lives. And you know, maybe thats a good thing Maybe a whole group of friends can have a different shirt from the series and tell a story to those they pass as they walk side by side. I don't know that anyone care or agrees but thats my stand. I think the design is great as an original but its like a summer of nothing but slasher films or having the same meal 60 days in a row. Its just too much.

I think you've tapped into why the vitriol spills over so frequently to sekiyoku and ramyb. The cutesy animals are pretty much all the same, but it seems to be what wooters say they want. Personally, I find most of them too childish and really repetitive, but I don't think I'm the target audience. Although, as a developmental neurobiologist, and former Genesis owner, I did have to buy the Shh shirt.

I appreciate the talent that it took to figure out the shading/texturing and half-tone techniqes to make these interesting shirts while being constrained to a six color scheme, I sure as hell haven't figured that out yet.

Anyways, you're right. If the people like chocolate ice cream, forget the stracciatella, just give them what sells.

Re: Inspired by The Amazing Race

I think it's clever and I actually feel like the shirt is whimsical enough that you can let some anatomy slide. However, I agree with the criticism of the stump-legs on some animals and the more detailed feet on others - it would make sense if the stump-legged critters were farther away and thus less detailed, but that doesn't seem to be the case here. Keeping a consistent style throughout the design would help.

My other nitpick is that the dog looks a lot like a fox without a fox's tail. It would've been nice if he looked a bit more like a proper dog.

sekiyoku

quality posts: 18 Private Messages sekiyoku

Okay, so to address a few things.

One, you're really not going to appreciate the shirt if you hate cute animals AND don't know what the Chinese zodiac is. I accept that. Sorry for you guys.

Two, I agonized over what style to make this design. A lot of you think that drawing this cute animal style is easier than doing it in a more artistic style, but it's not. It's easier for me to do the animals in an artistic style because the coloring is much easier (since the drawing stands more on its own when you're limited to 6 colors) - for example, tgentry's Sun Wu Kong shirt was artistic and just one color. Can you imagine how dumb cute animals would look colored like that?

Anyway, my point is that I wanted to do a cute animal side design, but I considered a different style at several points, including at the beginning and also when I was 3/4th done with the picture and the colors weren't working out. In the end, I like the design and I'm glad that some of you can appreciate the colors and layout, even if you dislike cute animals.

Three, I am getting sick of cute animals too. This may be good news or no news, because one, I don't consider my elephant design from last week to be a cute animal entry, I consider it a visually pleasing picture with some cute elements. I also am not sick of cute staplers or cute cheez-its, for example. :p But if this image were not of the Chinese zodiac, then I wouldn't really care for it much (as it is, I love China. ) Honestly, because people complain about cute animals so much, I almost feel obligated to do them so people don't start complaining I'm selling out.

But anyway, four, I won't be doing a cute animal next week. This isn't to appease anyone, it's just a fact that I want you to know now so you can get on my case less until it happens. Haha. I wish. ;)

@ eHalcyon - Some of my long post is relevant to yours. Anyway, of course the rooster is going to catch up! Look at how hard it's struggling. :D Also these are magical animals that grow to arbitrary sizes determined by how they fit into the picture. >_> And the ox is running daintily in order to not upset the mouse and its mai tai, but it's so awesome that it's going to get first anyway (OR SO IT THINKS.) :D

Ok usually I dislike both you and Ramyb's designs, but I'd like to say congratulations on this one. One for the different composition than the normal chest placement. And two, because yes it must have been very hard to make those colors work as well as you have done. Even the tiger and the fox feel like two slightly different oranges. And although I'm not a big follower of the Chinese Zodiac symbols, I can imagine that would be a nice surprise in the design for someone that is.

So thank you for a good design Sekiyoku.

Well, unless that's not light on the bottom of the ox, that seems odd, likewise with some of the leg light... on the horse it seems all the light is coming from the right... and just little small highlights on a bunch of the animals that just look out of place, bu less noticeable. As well, no shadows are really case onto another animal, only to the ground in an that lightning-bolt type shape, granted that might have been a desired effect.

I completely disagree with your statement. Almost every single person I know knows about the Chinese zodiac. Many of them will notice the error and point it out. Like people point out errors on an essay or a roadsign, people will point out errors on a t-shirt. But then again, I could be from areas where people are more knowledgeable about the world and different legends.

I concur :] The first thing I did when I looked at the shirt was go through all the animals. Of course people on the street aren't going to stop you and yell at you for wearing a shirt that has the Chinese Zodiac in the wrong order.

It is there, it will get pointed out. Unless there's a footnote on the back of the shirt saying the chicken will pass the dog, I really don't feel like explaining why the chicken is behind to everyone.

Other than that, good job. I think re-interpretation-wise (xD haha) it's the best one out there.

Good idea for a design, but there's no diversity in eyes... they're either beady black dots or squinted less-than signs.

Understood that there are many color choices for the eyes when you're limited in colors but the shapes matter, too.

(I think I'm commenting too much on this shirt's threat, but oh well, haha)

Just wanted to point out that you get major props for referencing Native American legends - I'm actually Sioux, so it's pretty neat to find some people with a working knowledge of the culture

I think you have really great ideas, but i really dislike the cartoony/kiddy nature of the creatures

Love it. I always love your shirts but don't always buy because I am in an anti-black shirt buying mode.

I am familiar with the Chinese zodiac.....but just familiar not an expert. So, I trust you have everyone in there and since there is no finish line on the shirt, I don't think it makes much difference what order they are in in this snapshot of the race.

Cranberry shirt is a win. I'm in for 1 definitely, probably 2.

Keep up the great work.

I have to agree, the vote link clearly says: "I'D WANT ONE"

I only vote for shirts I would buy. There are many designs that are great, but I wouldn't wear. The comment section is a good way to praise the artist if you aren't going to buy.

One part of Threadless' system I do like is that you are able to rate a design separately on its merit and be able to specify additionally that you would buy it.

Re: Inspired by The Amazing Race

I must say, I am not a fan of this style, nor a fan in general of cute animals, and generally dislike anime/chibi. Additionally, I dislike the fact that the same few artists continually win, when most of the time, there are a few much more deserving designs.

However, that being said... I really like this design. I am not sure exactly what it is that outweighs my dislike of that style or cute animals, but I think it is the color, composition and sense of motion. I didn't recognize the Chinese Zodiac until it was pointed out, and I don't think many who glance at this shirt as it is being worn will either, but that definitely as another level to the design in general to appreciate.

So ignoring my own prejudices, discontent with nature of the voting at Woot... you got my vote, and I would gladly wear this shirt.

Well done, it is a very appealing design.

This shirt doesn't feel stiff like I felt the Thundercats and Basic Training shirts were (I know, I know, different artists. . . but your art styles seem very inspired by eachother).

I love the colour scheme and the movement of this shirt, and I actually got the Chinese zodiac reference right away (as I studied Mandarin for three years of high school), so this shirt got my vote right off the bat.

Sorry it took me so long to comment, and good work!

emm... not from a show, but from an old Chinese book Journey to the west, unless I am mistaken.

Still single, can't imagine why.

There have also been many adaptations of Journey to the West in forms of tv shows/movies/cartoons/anime. Now I think Gorillaz made a musical for it if I'm not mistaken.

I've read quite a few comments and "constructive criticism" that has been left for this shirt and I think people are being way too critical of this design. It's an effing T-shirt people. I mean really get over yourselves.

I think it fits the theme of the derby perfectly, without being so weird and abstract that if you bought it you'd have to be explaining the derby theme to people in order for them to get it.

On a side note, I will never get tired of cute animals and I love the way you draw their eyes. I will be purchasing this shirt.

Re: Inspired by The Amazing Race

Personally I disagree with a lot of the comments out there. I mean this is a particular style. I mean if the animals were drawn more realistically I feel like it'd take more than 6 colors to make it look nice. Whereas, with a cartoony feel the same concept can be expressed just as well.

I feel like this shirt has a very awesome concept. In my opinion, the way you drew it doesn't seem that static to me at all and I can tell that they're all racing. If people understand the story behind it, then this race is very amazing in its own right.

And about the comments addressing that it's the same people who win all the time. That's not true. There's a reason that certain people win. Sure some people like sticking with the same choice. But it all depends on the appeal of the shirt AND the actual design. Sure there are some extremely detailed and artsy shirts also running in the derby but if a lot of people don't love the concept as much or can't see themselves wearing it then that might explain the lack of votes.

At least that's how I vote. I don't look at the artist's names so much as how much the shirt itself appeals to me and if I'd really wear it.

So great job, Seki! I absolutely LOVE this shirt. I love the Chinese Zodiac and I think that your take on this concept is absolutely adorable. I am definitely in for one if it prints! Good luck!
