Re: Battle Cry

I think one of the things that makes me so averse to the influx of anime here is that I look at this, and I say 'why the hell would someone draw vikings like anime?"

"Anime (アニメ), an abbreviated pronunciation in Japanese of "animation"... is animation originating in Japan."
-Wikipedia, 'Anime'

My shirt image is not an animation, but thanks for the thought there.

So the characters do not look like they're from anime? Would I be unable to say "this looks like hanna barbera" because hanna barbera did animation?

The question still stands: what benefit is there from using a style that was, up until recently, nothing but a japanese pop-culture cartooning style, for vikings? That's what gets me about this sort of thing... it feels like it's all one likes, and all one can do, as opposed to a personal style choice (walmazan would be an example: everything he draws looks like a walmazan character, not like some other style).

Um, this isn't even really drawn in the anime style. Or not enough of the style to be O.M.G!!111 ANIME!! to someone who likes the style. At the most it has a vague influence of anime.

I mean I know people are sensitive to anime art here but man.

This is an anime viking:

Also I hate to break it to you but Japan doesn't all draw in the same style or something. That's like thinking all American art is in the style of superhero comics. Some of the stuff I see posted here on Woot that's just cartoony stuff, that no one bats an eye at, looks like a ton of Japanese advertising. Look a whale!

So yeah, Japan has been influenced by artist from all over just like we're getting a huge influence from them, not unlike like the time we had a huge influence from European comics back in the 80's. It's just a trend, one you seem a bit sensitive too.

Ok, so first of all, I missed the 'like', so you are right about the anime reference, I take back my comment. Apologies.

Second of all, to answer your initial question on why I chose to draw vikings as cartoons is because I wanted to, and I thought it'd be fun. It was. My goal was successfully completed. It looks sillier that way, and that was the look I was going for.

The "anime" reference you speak of is simply natural for me -- I've always expressed emotions through faces that resemble what you'd call "anime like." It's just how I think. Maybe it's because I'm Japanese, maybe not. Whatever reason, I ENJOY the style. I honestly don't see why I'm not allowed to do vikings in the style. T-T

At any rate, as for "all one can do," I'd hope my previous shirt designs have proved otherwise, but if not, there's always my online portfolio. :P

Thanks for this comment -- it made me happy, even if you were only defending your views. :D I was glad to see I wasn't the only one confused by Adder's comment.

My ancestry is almost 100% viking (traced back on both sides to a bunch of angry sea-faring Norwegian folk)-- so I would absolutely love to wear this shirt.

I don't have a great feeling about the chances this shirt has for printing here- so please, if you take it somewhere else, drop me a PM so that I can buy it!

It's not that hard to read it. The creatures are the same generic deformed people many of the biggest abusers of the style use regularly. And doubly so because most of your early work DOES hold plenty of promise, it confuses me as to their use here. Which is why I actually ASKED about it to you, because I know you have more in your arsenal, while others do not.

In a contest where deformed otaku drawings regularly take the grand, and are crammed into any design possible, it is, to me, a valid concern. It's never been an overly interesting stylistic choice to me, and can easily be viewed a cop-out. And when I see someone who has done some lovely work that would never have had a wide audience, as well as having won with a comparatively (by woot standards, certainly) solid and creative early entry, it worries me greatly as one more instance of woot backsliding instead of pushing forward.

LOL, it was no problem at all. I love being able to post that whale image.

The words we use in American to talk about Japanese pop culture are not very descriptive or useful so I can easily see the confusion.

Cute idea Mikan: ) It's very amusing to think of a bunch of vikings marching around crying, hehe.

I'm not going to answer all points because at 5am it's kind of tiring, but I will say that I am not intending to "backslide" via this type of entry. I'm just in it for the fun.

That's awesome! I'm actually happy to know you like the drawing considering your Viking background. Makes me feel like the shirt is more justified, haha. I'll definitely let you know if I get the shirt printed elsewhere. Thanks for the shirt-love!
