There's only one person who knows how the dictators were defeated. A smart soldier who understood what really was going on.

Unfortunately I agree it will get rejected. Woot has rejected almost any reference to a dictator before. I hope not bc I think it's hilairous so +1 for now.

Well, in my opinion that's clearly not Hitler. And this gesture wasn't something he created. There were some other dictators who used it. Anyway, it would be a shame if that got rejected.

Yeah I agree about that. The top and bottom feel tacked on and IMO kind of make it off topic. Would love to see it without those.

Did you sub this at Threadless or somewhere? This seems very familiar for some reason, like I scored it there or something.

You cannot get simpler and greater than this.
Even though isn't the interpretation of any historical fact. I'd buy it and won't be bothered if it doesn't get rejected because of the off topic thing

I think it's one of those "motivational" posters or something with Churchill beating Hitler using scissors (or in this case a peace sign). It even has it's own facebook page. I think that's where I saw it, someone "liked" it on facebook. It seemed familiar, but I'm not sure if I've seen it in the shirt world yet or not.

Yes, I sent to Threadless I while back. But it was a bit different, the dictator had a gun pointed to his head on the last shot. Hehe. I changed because some people thought it to strong. I made him just sad on this version, instead.

Or it could just be Jean-Baptiste comte de Rochambeau who was a French General who fought on the American side in the Revolutionary war vs British general if you changed the uniforms up a bit. And be a play on the victory of the Battle of the Chesapeak...

Re: The man who ended the war

Regarding rejection, I prefer to wait to see what woot thinks.
But IMO it would be a bit too moralist to reject, given I'm not laughing at people who suffered or died or anything. I'm just, as many other people have done before me, seeing a historical fact (the gesture used by real dictators - note the PLURAL) through a lightened perspective.

I knew it had potential to be polemic. But I'm happy to see that a lot of you understood and liked it. ;)

I think this will get rejected, not because a dictator reference (totally different 'stash than Hitler), I just don't see the "Eyewitness History" here.

If it does get rejected, definitely save it to be resubmitted for another derby as I love it and think it's pretty damn funny.

CHensler2009

quality posts: 0 Private Messages CHensler2009

I think this is funny, but if everyone is right about woot not liking Hitler references this will be rejected.

Even though it really isn't the same stash, Hitler was famous for that salute. I immediately thought Hitler when I saw this.

Still funny though

I thought about that before subbing. But I ended up assuming that if I'm showing my view of something that happened, I'm making YOU the witness, right? It's just a different way of seeing the theme.

And if I get rejected because of that... well, with all due respect, than 70% of the derby have to be to. ;)

THIS SHIRT IS SO EPIC I HAVE TO TYPE IN ALL CAPS. THIS BETTER NOT GET REJECTED, HITLER OR NOT, THE DERBY THEME IS HISTORY AND IF THE WOOT! GUYS ARE GOING TO ASK PEOPLE TO REFERENCE HISTORY THEY SHOULD ACCEPT HITLER SUBMISSIONS, SEEING AS THOUGH ITS A MAJOR PART OF HISTORY. AND THIS IS A TOTALLY CLASSIC REFERENCE TO HITLER THIS ISN'T OFFENSIVE IN THE LEAST

Ok, that makes sense.

@CHensler2009 - The entire German army was known for that salute, not just Hitler. ;)

Woot better not reject this because it is NOT Hitler. Hitler was thinner, didn't have sideburns, and his stash is very iconic with it being the small strip. This just looks like a German officer imo.

I think it's just Tom Selleck with his stash disguised as a German.

Re: The man who ended the war

I agree that the top and bottom panels just clutter the design, though the bottom one is kinda fun. But I have no doubt that this will be rejected, probably with "just no" or something as a reason. It's clearly got a N-A-Z-I on it, official symbol or not.

I think the bottom two panels are great. I agree the third one can be cut. If they reject it, email Woot and find out if you can show just the bottom two. It will take away any appearance of just a dictator sign, and make it solely rock paper scissors.

I do, however, think the bottom panel helps make this shirt great, because it adds a light heartedness to it.

I really like the concept, but I'd rather have the shirt as just the middle pair; I think the shirt is cleaner and simpler with just the two figures. I'd definitely vote for it then.

Re: The man who ended the war

While I completely agree that this is a great idea, I think it could use some work. Two things it does not need, the top and bottom panel, as some others have already stated, and the middle panel itself really doesn't need the small scissors thought bubble. While some people may not get it right at first, the idea would come across quite clearly without it, and it would make the shirt much stronger without it. Also, not that original of an idea in the first place. http://robertbonnett.files.wordpress.com/2009/11/hitler-scissors-beat-paper.jpg Still sgreat to see in illustrated form, though (yes, I know it's not supposed to be hitler) just my opinion.

Hi guys!
About the Churchill pictures... they don't affect my design at all. Not the first time someone has had an idea that others have had too. And for the t-shirt format, I believe this is new.

About the tree frames: I did several tests with this design and one of the things I like the most is the fact it has a storytelling. If I had gone for a one time joke, it would be a completely different design and it would lose a lot of the fun (in my opinion).

* The first frame sets the scene: a dictator, giving his usual salute. You don't know what is coming next.
* The second, introduces the unexpected, nonsense element: the idea that it's all part of a child's game.
* The third is, for me, when the laugh really comes: the exaggeration, the light hearted sadness of the loser, the absurd happiness of the winner, the ridiculousness of that dispute.

Might as I try, I just can't see it working well without one of them.
If I cut lose the first, I lose the surprise people would have when the second frame comes.
If I cut lose the last, I lose the absurd reactions, which I believe are crucial to make the joke lighter and funnier.

I respect your opinions, but for me it's definitely a joke in 3 times. ;))

Thanks a lot for all the comments! You've been great. :-D

I agree with this, definitely better with three for the storytelling aspect. If it was just the center frame, or even just the last two, it would still be funny, but it would lose a lot of character. GMV

i needed a color to match both the green of the soldier and the brown of the boots and the general uniform. in my taste, creme did this job better. but that's just a matter of taste, I guess. ;)

The real joke of the design has to be read further down the shirt. What most people are going to see is just a Help! Help! I'm being oppressed! on your chest. Not something I would wear. Nicely drawn illustrations though.

While it is a fairly generic toon, the fact that he has the same outfit, moustache, and salute as a certain European dictator who was in power during a certain world war puts this in jeopardy I believe. Regardless, I love it.

I'd rather just have the middle pair. I don't want those dudes that far down on my shirt. And besides, it's fun not having an ending to the story. Why not let both get posted up there--one with just the middle pair. I'd "I'd Buy That" if it was just the middle pair.

As a 7th-generation Army soldier whose grandfather served in WWII, I MUST HAVE THIS SHIRT!!!

Perfect execution, and I agree that the movie-reel feel of the shirt was the correct idea, even if the lower panel is a little low for my liking.
