Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Why so sad, Mr Electron?
(Nice design!)
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Ha! I was thinking of doing an atom design. Your take is very clever - nice one.
I absolutely love the expressions. Very clever to differentiate the unhappy electrons. GMV
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Oh...the colors are so nice and the little charge signs are adorable.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Clever take on the theme.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
aww man thats so awesome, would love to buy this seeing as im a chem major
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
I would be unhappy too if I was negative all the time.
I'm sorry I can't vote for this shirt. You drew the proton size according to an antiquated model :P

Although this is obviously just a diagrammatic representation (compare the electrons to the protons, for instance)- I made sure tomake the protons a decent bit smaller than the neutrons (relatively)- if you carefully measure the two, you'll find they are pretty close to scale, proportional to each other
At first glance they look pretty similar, but that kind of small detail was important to me and I took it into account :P
Sorry should have added *sarcasm off* on my above post. I know it is not supposed to be a TRUE scale model. I was just poking fun at the fact that a scientific article was just published saying the sizer of the proton is ever so slightly smaller than previously believed.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Ahhh! As a chem major, I WANT.

Don't worry, I didn't take your comment in seriousness (although the protons really are ever so slightly smaller in the design, I wasn' kidding about that)
Anyway, glad people are enjoying this design, I had a lot of fun working on it :D
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
I think this one's great. One of those ideas I wish I had thought of. ![]()
the concept is very original, even the colors and halftones look good. This is the a good example that even with the obvious lack of artistic talent you could make a visually appealing design. Good.
Hah, this is how I taught my tutorees how to remember subatomic particles.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Oh I love this! Cute enough for the cute crowd and geeky enough for the science crowd!
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
I didn't get it. But now I do. Do want!
really like the design. hope it wins.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
I love this! It's adorable and really, really clever. Great design!
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Really clever idea. And the colors really pop well.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
This is clever! <3 it.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Because this shirt is so awesome, I must refuse to vote for your other one in case it knocks this one away...
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Looks like carbon-13 (7 neutrons, 6 protons). Not complaining since it is a valid/abundant isotope - just curious if that was the intent.
gmv
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Fantastic idea! I'm not a cute-shirt-wearing kinda guy, so this might be one of the few designs from this derby I'd actually buy. And I have several friends who are more science-y that I know would LOVE it. Great work!!
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
This is *SO* clever! O.o Love it!
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Oh, those electrons... they are just so damn negative, it's depressing!
kettletoast wrote:Fantastic idea! I'm not a cute-shirt-wearing kinda guy, so this might be one of the few designs from this derby I'd actually buy. And I have several friends who are more science-y that I know would LOVE it. Great work!!
Thanks so much, I'm glad to hear that :D I wanted to find a good balance between cute and nerdy that wasn't too overpowering either way, so hopefully your comment means that I was successful
And thanks to everyone else for the kind words on this design ![]()
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Love it!! And it's not a bunny or a turtle!
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
This is great!
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom

Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
GMV. It was the charge signs that did it.
I didn't even notice the + and - signs at first. I actually wish they weren't there. BUT even so this is my favorite shirt design here in a loooong, looong time.
Science should be this fun all the time.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Ah-hahh, now this is Ramyb I like to see. ;) Clever.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
happy to see such a good design, though sadly this one wont sell as many as the bunny will.
I want this one. The expressions of the neutrons crack me up.
I love this!!!!!! !!
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
love this design. Its really the only shirt i'de consider buying this derby
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
More importantly than the Proton/Neutron size... the electrons seem to be orbiting the nucleus, which isn't what happens. Energy levels and orbitals would be ideal.
Nice to see a shirt that isn't a stupid animal though.

if you can't see the orbitals and energy levels, you must be blind.
Somehow this post got added to the wrong place. Ignore...
pure5152 wrote:if you can't see the orbitals and energy levels, you must be blind.
The electrons are orbiting, however, that's not accurate as of 1911. No lines and just clouds would be a better representation.
As a chem major, I dream of shirts getting this correct, alas, we seem stuck in a world where atom graphics have fixed electron orbits.
Ignore my (immediately) above post, I got fowarded somewhere weird and it threw me off.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Heh, this is really cute. Those electrons need counseling.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
I like this one a lot. I wasn't a big fan of killer rabbit, but this one would be fun to wear. Seki's kitten is pretty nice also, but the text hurts that one for me, so I'm hoping this one gets more votes.

I was also wondering about that...
Best ever please let this win.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Love the expressions on the neutrons, electrons and protons. I would have to get this and one for my sone. Two chemical engineers.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
GMV
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
I would wear this shirt in a heartbeat. Love it!
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
Science + Cute = Awesome

This shirt would look ridiculous with an exact atom diagram. It would make more sense for you to complain about the lack of free-space that an atom is mostly comprised of with a minuscule nucleus. Atoms are still generally represented like this because the behavior of electrons would be all but impossible to actually portray. Each energy level is depicted on the tee with the lines which in turn represent the spherical shape of the energy levels. One should realize that the electrons are not in a fixed, circular orbit in their energy levels, but instead in the electron cloud.
Regardless, this shirt got my vote, and I will buy it in a heartbeat if it's a winner! Plus, I won't be embarrassed wearing it in plain view of my chem. professor!

b/c they're negative!

Spiritgreen wrote:Why so sad, Mr Electron?

On the off chance you were really asking - and not merely being facetious - here is an explanation of the particle emotions:
+ protons are positive, so they are smiling
0 neutrons are neutral, so they are neither smiling nor frowning
- electrons are negative, so they are frowning/crying
Fabulous shirt! I REALLY hope this one wins..
...Then I could use it in my classroom!
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
dude ramyb, didn't you go to JHU
for shame, what would prof bowen say if he saw you drawing an inaccurate model of the atom? what happened to the probability clouds
lol jk dude, it's a cute drawing
Want to buy!
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
oh my gosh! I hope this one win so much! xD
Easily my favorite entry this time. I'd like to have this on my body. As opposed to inside, where carbon usually is.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
totally bought this, wore it to class, and got major high-fives.
Re: Orbital Model of the Carbon Atom
I wish I could have gotten this one.
