Re: Nuclear Physics

Please allow me to explain! I took the concept of Sir Isaac Newton sitting under an apple tree and gave it a sort of post-apocolyptic/acid flashback slant. Hopefully the end effect is that, from a distance, the shirt appears to be a guy relaxing under a tree.

I left colors and gradients out of this go 'round because I wanted it to be cold and impersonal. I'll shut up now.

This is an amazing shirt. The only thing I don't like is that it's on yellow and I don't like wearing yellow shirts. But I might actually buy it if it prints.

i agree, not liking the lemon all the much. perhaps if it was on brown or something. anything but black though. anyway this is prolly the best design i've seen in this derby so far so congrats on great work. GMV nonetheless.

Really nicely done. I feel like there's a wholly developed idea/concept/theme going on here (unlike some other entries this week), that's actually fully on-topic. There's also the clean & polished execution to take into account. +1

I'm not sure I'm into the yellow shirt and I'm not really confident it'll beat out some of the others to print, but it's a fantastic and well thought-out concept, so I'll vote for it.

Re: Nuclear Physics

I agree that this design is eminently 'wearable'. So many designs I see on woot are clever and/or beautiful, but really just don't belong on a shirt. Those are frustrating because I like them but can't bring myself to get a shirt with those designs.

This, on the other hand, is fantastic. I can imagine it looking like a guy under a tree at first glance. What really struck me was how the mushroom cloud/tree seems to start as one and become the other as you look up or down it. Very well done, and GMV for sure.

Re: Nuclear Physics

I can not thank everyone enough for the continued support. I know this design is pretty much guaranteed not to sell any kids sizes if it did actually print due to the mature nature. Its definitely 180 degrees from the cutesy designs I have submitted in the past, but it evoked many emotions in me during the creation process... something that simply did not happen when I was drawing that kawaii lemon from a few derbies back. Thanks again, everyone.

Well it's at least in 8th place at this point (thanks to the weird 10th place being 9th thing). Maybe it can print. What the hell, if it prints I'll buy one, maybe I look good in yellow.

Eh?

I love the design, it's really quite brilliant. I like the nice little touch of the "flower" too. I echo some of the worry about lemon, but when I think about it, lemon is the most suited color for this shirt.

It harkens back further than you think! I know it's kinda hard to tell, but the design is actually based in the 1940s. That's why I equipped the soldier with an M1 carbine rifle and the bombs resemble the Fatman bomb that was dropped on Nagasaki. In that sense I guess its more of a "memorial" than a harbinger of things to come... but I totally understand what you're saying.

This is absolutely amazing. The theme, the cohesion of the piece (i.e. the flower and the fruit and the tree) are all brilliant. Visually and thematically stunning, hands down most creative and striking piece I've seen on this site. And to do it all with one color! You, my friend, are amazing.

paulkremer wrote:More dropping warheads...can we please stop with it?

lol.

We have 0 designs with warheads currently in print on this site. There are two with turtles and two with rock/scissor combos. Are they next? Did you really expect no one to go with a nuclear theme, considering it's a major branch of physics?

Lol, oh, well I wasn't sure if the "Eh?" was for that or the color...

I think it might have a shot at 3rd place, especially considering how quickly it seemed to shoot up into the fog, but if the gaps between the leaders are pretty big it probably won't make it there. The shiny jar seems to be getting popular too, which might seal its less-than-3rd fate.

I suppose. Whatever. Physics - Death, I get it. Physics is bad, anything radioactive is bad, nuclear physicists bad. War is bad, physics leads to war.

Why ask questions? Why explore nature? Why try to understand the atom?

The shape of this and the cries of "totally wearable" pretty much, to me, define why I am nonplussed by voting here, and think woot needs more editorial control.

It's not a bad design, but it really feels forced into constraints instead of organic and wearable. The edge of the tree analog, the height of said tree compared to the size of the falling bomb-apples, the land-line at the bottom... it just makes this a bit awkward. Totally ignoring that the message is a bit trite, it just needs some polish to take it where the intention seems to be. And without that polish, it's just not win-ready.

I disagree. I think this is a very unique design with a clear parody. There is nothing awkward about this design, and nothing trite about the message. Yes there are a lot of shirts out there with radioactive symbols and mushroom clouds, but none as clever and thought out as this is. This shirt is a win in my opinion, whether it prints or not. I sure hope it does...

Adder, your woot rep is way better than mine, but I think your opinion is bunk. This shirt IS wearable. A lot of designs feel like they were created as an illustration and then slapped on a t-shirt comp at the last minute, while this one was designed to be worn on a t. This is a great shirt and I think it will sell well if it prints. No hate Adder, just a difference of opinion

Re: Nuclear Physics

I just keep coming back to this design- there is something about it. The first time I saw it you got my vote.
A quick glace I saw a skeleton leaning against a tree- "what the carp?" Then- HOLY CARP- IT'S NEWTON IN FALLOUT 3!!!! (but where did he find a tree).... well OK, maybe that wasn't your intent, but that was sorta what I saw.
Either way I think it's an amazing design- made me do a double take- and that is exactly what I want when people see my woot shirts. Well Done!

I like the concept, and the color I suppose would be tolerable, but with the gun, I don't think it will look like a guy just relaxing from a distance. Also they have little to nothing to do with nuclear physics, course the governments might have secret nuclear powered rifles, who knows. I feel the shirt would of been fine without it.

This shirt actually won 3rd place in the derby and sold here. Unfortunately, it has been reckoned, which means it is no longer for sale. But you can always try these options for obtaining it. It might take a while (a long while), but if you're patient and persevere, you just may get it, eventually.
