Re: Pulleys

I don't know a whole lot about the world of Physics, but I do remember learning about pulleys in school. I was really fascinated that a tiny person could pull a large weight just by adding more 'wheelythings' to the equation . It's one of very few actual memories I have of the class...most of the rest of the time I was drawing on my bookcovers... ^^;

Hope you enjoy this entry, thanks everyone.

(PS: Anyone battling tons of runtime errors on the site? Wow, it was like fighting alligators to submit to the derby tonight...)

love it, very clever and SUPER cute! im gonna pretend that these are rats because they are much smarter than mice =)

love your style and your characters, your work continues to impress me! =D

(yes the site has been running HORRIBLE for me as well. its been slow ever since they were down for maintenance. hopefully they will fix the problem soon, i can barely get around the site as it is now.)

love the shirt. on a personal note its to bad you couldn't have worked in a subtle hitchiker's guide reference if you were using white mice. but the shirt is great

True... you'd need some pulleys pulling on other pulleys for it to save that rat some work. Still a great design though!

Very sweet, cohesive design. ^_^

The drawing and especially your colors and that textured background are spot on. GMV.

Re: Pulleys

This is a great idea, but for it to really work for me you'd have to resub with functioning pulleys.

Hint: Pulleys only work if the wheels are getting closer to each other as the object is lifted.

Very cute, interesting, original, and wonderful idea and most of all ON-TOPIC

Doesn't seem very shirtable though.
Not for me at least! Good Luck though!

Would you kindly...

I realize the pulley system shown on the shirt isn't entirely accurate. When I tried a more realistic system, the composition on the shirt didn't quite look right. It would have pushed the mice to be down on the belly of the shirt, and the focus of the shirt would have been mostly pulleys. So, while it would have been more correct, it would have looked a bit less appealing to the general person (as opposed to physics/pulley fans).

I struggled all day Saturday with how to make a real pulley system work, which is why this entry is so late ^^;. Sorry it's kind of flubbed. I did find a few references and cartoons about pulleys that showed similar displays of them as I have here. I was hoping it would still get the point across about the neatness of pulleys.

Ha! I feel your pain! You're right though, it doesn't really matter because more pulleys = more greatness. I think he's able to lift a bigger cheese just because he is energized by the awesomeness of his lifting contraption. GMV! ;)

Oh man, you should have seen how many sketches I did of actual pulley systems. I did the long ones, the ones with multiple pulleys on one fixture, etc. It just kept pushing the mice to the bad "underboob" area, or the belly..neither of which are places you want the design to highlight if possible. I also had to be careful about the cheese placements for similar reasons. I wish I'd had more time to fiddle with it.

When it comes to cartoons, I'm of the belief that "over the top" is more important than "would this work in real life". I think it's great as it is.

The only thing that would make this better in my opinion is if the payoff was bigger. Like if the mouse with the small slice of cheese was really struggling to move it along. kind of like getting even a small piece was an impossible task.

As usual, it's a great piece of art.

Excellent execution! I've been working on a similar design (single mouse with anvil setting a trap for the cat), and you are so right about the pulleys being a pain to get to work right and look nice within the composition.

Excellent job!

Yay it's up! I really like the way you've colored the cheese on this image, lol sorry I just really like it. The background wood texture is a really nice touch too. Pinches those tiny mice cheeks. =D

Same! That wood grain in the back really makes the solid colored mice and cheese stand out. Very cute design. With the rate it's getting votes, this will be a contender.

The first thing I thought was that I must have one. the 2nd thing I thought is that the pully system doesn't actually do anything. My 3rd thought was most folks are too uneducated to know, so I will buy it anyway

Good to see this climbing up toward the fog so steadily bassanimation. I am suspicious that as well as votes you might be using a complex system of pulleys to get it up that high.

Actually, I'm using a complex system of broken pulleys...this thing is seriously heavy.. If Im not careful I'll further irritate my butt sprain. (yes, according to my physical therapist I have a butt sprain..haaa!)

Thanks again everyone, your support has been really wonderful. Rodents everywhere will groom your hands and faces to show their appreciation. <3 Just watch out, they love to climb in your mouth...

  • Congratulations on winning a Best Loser Award!
  • This is not SPAM.
  • Winning a BLA does NOT mean this shirt won't print -- I'm hoping it does.
  • Your one and only gift is this crappy little badge in your shirt thread. Enjoy.
  • See those girls they're heaven blessed -- I guess it's so they know best.

Thanks so much, Robert!

Also thanks to everyone for the crazy amazing support for these little guys. I had no idea they would get this kind of response, seriously. I'm really happy people liked them overall. I sure appreciate it and they were a lot of fun to draw.

Also special thanks to Ressamac for the BLA recommendation :D, and to Lagbert, who has kindly helped me review my pulley system to make it be more effective. I will be revisiting that part of the design here soon to make it more physics worthy

I wanted to tell everyone thank you once again for your wonderful support of the Pulley Mice! I think they'll manage to 'squeak' in at 9th or 8th place, which is WAY better than I ever thought they'd do! Thanks so much, y'all. It was a fun derby to see, with lots of cool entries.

And now, one last dorky picture of one of my horde, for fellow rodent lovers. :3

Weird, I was just talking about Gracie's tube here at work! She had a large abscess in her jaw/throat area that had to be removed. You have to leave the incision open so it can 'drain'. They put the tube there to help the drainage. She recovered and lived a long life.

(She is also the mascot on my Twitter page)

I seriously just wished that the pulleys had been correctly configured to render the point accurately. I want to buy this shirt but because of the error I cant wear it around any of my physics classmates or I will be dreadfully made fun of...

Yeah... your pulley is terribly wrong. I'd "I'd buy this shirt" if the pulleys were correctly done, but because it's not correctly nerdy--sorry.

Re: Pulleys

No worries. See, this incorrect pulley shirt exists in this dimension, where it did not place as is not for sale. In another dimension, the pulleys are correct and the shirt is for sale.

The universe takes care of it all.
