Re: Hitchhikers with Towels

In the golden age of the Great American Road Trip, one was sure to see a number of characters hitchhiking their way across the countryside. Picking up hitchhikers isn't as safe as it used to be but never, under any circumstances, pick up a traveler who doesn't have his towel with him. It is about the most massively useful thing an intergalactic hitchhiker can have, and anyone you come across on Route 66 without one can't be trusted.

Where is his trusty Guide? Good that his towel is at the ready though, just in case any Ravenous Bugblatter Beasts are lurking about.

I think it would be cool if he were standing on a galaxy instead of a road. Anyway, good design.

Ahh, something that's almost, but not quite, completely unlike a clever tee.

I think.
"Hey, you sass that hoopy joshuajmasters? Now there's a frood who knows where his towel is."

Re: Hitchhikers with Towels

I'm a huge fan of H2G2, but other than the towel reference and the stubby thumb added to the pedestrian crossing sign, I don't see much to be excited about.
What's the interpretation of the sign? Hitchhiker crossing? Hitchhiker with towel crossing? Why would a hitchhiker cross the road? (To get to the other side, ba-da-bum!) But seriously, a hitchhiker who knows where his towel's at would know what direction he wanted to go. So he wouldn't be crossing.
The shirt doesn't say do pick up hitchhikers with towels or don't trust hitchhikers without towels (as the artist's narrative comments suggest).
The execution of the concept isn't very wearable. The distressing of the sign is weak and doesn't follow any logical pattern of wear or damage - at one point it extends beyond the area of the sign. According to the color swatches, only four colors are used, but the "tear" marks around the bolt holes at top and bottom look awfully much like gradients.
Sorry, what I see here is simply an exploitation of an inside joke, not the execution of an idea that combines H2G2 and the derby theme.

I would say it's not even much of an "inside" joke, as I think at this point Hitchhiker's has pretty much become common cultural knowledge. Fandom is not really the exclusive club people sometimes like to think it is.

Yes, I'm a huge fan of the books ... but this tee just doesn't do much for me either, I'm afraid.

Hey Fatstrat,
Thanks for jumping to my defense. I always write encouraging comments... even when I have a design in the same derby.

I wanted to let you know there is no gradients in the design... and I didn't simply add a towel. I created the entire sign from scratch... which was not as easy as I anticipated. As for his comment about a stubby thumb... that's just mean. The man's been on the road... he's had a lot of fast food... you can't blame him for adding on a couple extra pounds.

These sorts of tees aren't for fans, though. they're for people who say Omelets made great POPULAR THING and don't care.

The reason the guide and subsequent sequels were so brilliant was for the huge creativity inherent in the writing, the smart humor, the personal style Adams used. In short, making a parody tee of the most over-referenced part of the books cannot be done by anyone who truly respected them.

This is where these ideas fall flat. If you truly love the creative flair of the things you're referencing, you'd reference with your own creative flair. If you really loved Adams' books, you'd refuse to buy a tee that was a money grab only, and gave no respect to the books themselves for inspiration. The super popularity of this sort of work proves that we are in a society that has zero respect for craft. If you like the creative works that allow people to crap these simple reference designs out, don't buy these designs. Respect the original art enough to require other artists, especially those who wish to pull from that original art, to be no less original and creative, instead of letting Adams do all the work and reaping the financial benefits with little to no work of their own.

I'm not sure how well this design will read if you aren't up close to the shirt.

I dunno... I've met a LOT of people who either have no idea what HHG is, or all they know is 42 (which is really everything you need to know, but that's not the point).

Anyways, I can see what people are saying, but I'm a fan of the series and I would buy this shirt. Partially because I'm a fan, partially because most people here won't get it the first try (like I said), and partially because I find it amusing and thought it was clever (it could have been VERY overdone, and wasn't).
