Whenever I don't get a reference, 9/10 times it's Stephen Colbert who's to blame. XD

Not to detract from the design, cos it's funny, but this is why this theme is kinda ridiculous. You could draw anything and put "fear of" in front of it. Or is that the point?

No advertising, pls.

No, I don't think that's the point. I think people are stretching the theme a bit too far.

HA! Those are about the only references I do get! Generally I'm just lost around here.

staffell wrote:You could draw anything and put "fear of" in front of it. Or is that the point?

That's why I wrote the title the way I did. To emphasize that. But homophobia is a real fear, and thats really what the design (and the quote it's taken from) are about.

This may be a reference to a funny routine on TV, but homophobia could be considered an insensitive and therefore inappropriate topic.

I think this design is very clever and hysterical to boot. The theme is about phobias, which are of course irrational fears and this nails it, with its absurdity. I'm not sure if that makes sense, but it makes sense in my head.

This is the best shirt ever. Simply because, I don't necessarily know what I would think had I seen it on some random person on the street.. but I DO know that I'd stop, stare, then ask that person.. what the hell is that??

And that reaction, my folks, is enough to get my vote! HEART IT!

I think this would go better as a joyous pride t-shirt more than a fear or homophobia t-shirt.

Could we get that topic Woot!?

Totally inappropriate. Especially in light of current events. This crap is a small part of the reason we have problems in our schools and our society.
I sincerely hope this shirt is rejected.

/disagree completely

I really appreciate the way this design turns the derby topic on its head. Because of what it's referencing, it is about a fear (an implied fear in the source material), but it's presenting something whimsical and joyful, AND it's subtly mocking or lampooning people who actually are homophobic. At least that's what I get from it. I have a lot of "joyous" friends (many of them prefer "queer," actually), and I don't think any of them would be offended by this design; quite the opposite, I think they'd lose their hearts to the adorable carrots.

Oh.. and for those saying its inappropriate due to it being a sensitive subject..I say if we can't laugh at ourselves then what fun is life?? I'm a lesbian and would TOTALLY purchase this shirt!

Baby carrots and homophobia are a non sequitur. No one would guess that this is about phobias, since the rainbow flag is usually a symbol for pride. Also, I bet that Woot buyers are mostly male, and that over 90% of the males are straight -- and very few straight males will buy a t-shirt with a rainbow flag on it.

I'd stab to see a t-shirt in this contest that is supportive of upstanding citizens, addresses homophobia, and is wearable by straight males. That could really accomplish something. This shirt isn't it.

Your comment is totally inappropriate.

It's AMAZINGLY detailed artwork (love the silhouette details!) and conveys, yes, JOY. I, my daughter, and many of our friends will be very sad, if we never get a chance to buy one of these.

Any thought to contacting Colbert's people, Jewelwing? I'm sure he'd wear one!

This probably doesn't do much to address homophobia, but I'm a straight male and I'd wear it. If anyone asked me what it was about I'd tell them it was about "Facing my fear of baby carrots trying to turn me geigh." Then we would laugh at our inside joke and go our separate ways as better Americans.

You know... most women have a really good gaydar, and will be able to suss out if a guy wearing a rainbow on their shirt is actually g-ay or not. I know that if I saw a straight guy wearing this shirt, I'd be 20% more attracted to him. So, really these guys are avoiding rainbows because of what other dudes will think. How g-ay is that? ;)

So if someone were to layer 5 of these shirts at the same time, that's a 100% attraction from Boots. Take note, single guys.

I don't understand the question at all...

Anyhow, given that the derby description said it was about all phobias, real OR imaginary, how could anything possibly be considered off topic this week? C'mon guys, give us your real reason.

Hmmmm... Maybe the problem is with straight males and not the shirt.

Also pretty skeptical that over 90% of men are actually straight. Maybe over 90% of men "claim" to be straight.

im super bummed that this was rejected. i really think this is a case of the rejectioner not getting the reference. i think if you had stated that your phobia is that people have a fear that baby carrots will cause them to be joyous, and that it was a reference to the colbert show i think they would have kept this in. its unfortunate but please sub this somewhere else later, or maybe youll be able to resub it for another derby, either way i hope to see this printed some day =)
