Re: Time and Space

haha cool design man. I think your half-tone clock could be a little more obvious though as it could be easily missed. Any way, good work dude.

I like what you did with the halftoned clock arms. I haven't seen that in a drwho design before. Nice!

Re: Time and Space

Thanks, guys. I'm just trying out t-design for the first time - I know I'm not exactly a contender yet!

The "spray" behind the clock-arms was supposed to be a star-field (time and space together) but I never did get it to work. It was originally going to be a bunch of stars and clocks behind the police box, but I couldn't come up with anything that worked, so I went with the star-field and clock-arms.

It still doesn't work, but I did what I could.

And uniique, unless I'm mistaken I believe I just bought one of your t-shirts today! (The subject matter is related...)

It looks good (may want to use a darker field for generating your halftones), but from what I've seen, Dr Who Tardis shirts almost always wind up rejected. We'll see, though.

TARDIS! eep!
Wonderfully drawn. and I do get the whole time/space thing in the background although I wish it showed up more. Hope it doesnt get rejected.

Re: Time and Space

If it gets rejected, then it does. However, I did try to avoid any actual copyrighted material - no mention of Doctor Who, the word TARDIS, or even the "Police Public Call Box" lettering (which would have been outside the derby's rules anyway).

I do believe I'm well within the guidelines, but as there's no chance of the design winning, it will hardly be the end of the world if the Rejectionator strikes.

Yah! Thanks for buying one. :D Artists get $1 per tee sold. Every little bit counts. I actually totally forgot about the Dr.Who tee being scheduled on TeeFury today until just this afternoon. Wasn't until I saw a comment like yours here on woot. lol

Sadly, the BBC has even the image of the Police Box copyrighted, and Woot won't be able to print it unless there is obvious satire in the design.
I love it though and would buy it if it could be printed.

Well, first of all, there's not the slightest fear that this design will actually make it to print.

Secondly, how much "obvious satire" is in the It Came Out of Nowhere shirt that Woot have been selling for about 84 weeks now? Does pairing it with another movie's time-travel imagery qualify it as "obvious satire"?

These aren't sarcastic questions, by the way, but genuine ones.

Thanks for all the support, everyone - never expected to get more than 10 votes for my first week submitting a design (when frankly I can't design my way out of a paper bag).

Well, for starters, there is a concept in that one. there is no concept to this one, especially since the clock is almost invisible. Even if it's not satire or parody, it is a concept. This is basically just the TARDIS.

I didn't set out to "sell" anyone's trademarks. Of the five or so designs I was inspired to try for this derby - the first tee-shirt designing I have ever attempted - this is the only one that approached anyone else's proprietorial imagery. It's also the only one that even slightly worked... (Way down there in the voting you can spot a second failed sub of mine with purple-and-yellow trains.)

Basically I just thought the police box would look good in blue-and-orange. I certainly haven't continually submitted pop designs (though I did think of one more police box design last night!) nor do I intend to do so again unless there's a really great concept.

I may not even submit another design again - this isn't really my thing - but when I do it won't be about trying to sell someone else's trademarks, or even my own. I don't expect to ever get any money from this gig - I just liked the challenge of trying to put together something to the specifications of this derby.

And it was fun.

Thanks everybody!
