Thanks for the nice reception all!

I added a wiki link on the OP for those of us who somehow got through their lives without referring to Punnett squares on a daily basis.

Not to be a raincloud on this cute parade, but no video games is one of the rules and this seems to be a Mario reference...

It's really not. Man-eating plants didn't first appear in Mario games (hopefully the rejectionator understands that). The earliest I can think of was Little Shop of Horrors from the 1960, but I'd imagining they go back even further.

Others pointed out in the pre-derby thread the danger of a mario-related rejection and I changed around the colors to avoid that.

My first thought was Little Shop of Horrors and not Mario.

Ditto for me, and I spent years playing Super Mario Bros. -- didn't even cross my mind. Looks great on green, and I hope it prints because I want one.

It looks like a generic man eating plant to me, they have appeared in more than just mario, and even in places before mario existed.

If you look at the prederby thread, he was very careful to make sure it didn't look like one from the game.

Re: Punnett's Misstep

So... the killer flower is a recessive trait? Seems a bit more dominant to me ;)

I immediately thought Little Shop of Horrors. Mario didn't even cross my mind until somebody else mentioned it and I really don't think this plant looks like the one in Mario. Very original and creative design, kevlar. gmv!

Honestly my first thought was simply "venus fly trap". Considering it doesn't even resemble the Mario ones it didn't even cross my mind. (Which is odd since the kids were just playing Mario yesterday...)

I like the design, and its a nice change of pace from your usual stuff kevlar. Good use of the green shirt here as well.

Good luck on this one and it gets my vote!

It probably varies per school system. I definitely did them in high school biology, but I also did them in middle school in the basic form depicted here.

As a middle school science teacher, I have to say that this shirt simply rocks.

And yes, we do teach the simpler version of Punnett Squares in 7th grade, but we leave the incomplete dominance, dihybrid crosses, and linked traits until high school.

One quibble I have is the lack of distinction between alleles and phenotypes, but nonetheless, this shirt has my vote!

love to order this one and see how many students actually understand the underlying theme... oh, yeah, great job again!

did I mention that that this would make a GREAT first shirt... even without bears? LOL

Wonderful execution.

I can't help but wonder (and I truly am wondering, not just leading in to my definite opinion on the subject) if the shirt looks better as per the submission, with the chalked square centered, or if the entire design were centered (including the flowers on the left).

Thanks!

I played around with the placement for a bit, and definitely faced the same question you’re asking. In the end, having the rigid border off-center just seemed awkward. The more organic flowers were a lot more forgiving in that respect.
