Re: Sacrifice

I like it, but I think I liked the pre-final design better where the knight just had a horse's head, as opposed to the demon eyes and mouth kind of wearing the horse as a hat.

Still, really awesome design.

It bothers me that the demon face is pretty much the same as the one the band Disturbed always uses.

This is great all the way down to the details, such as the Knight and Pawn being correctly positioned for the Knight to take out the pawn on the next move. Good job.

Drakxxx(spelled it right!)
What I love about all of your artwork is the bits of yourself that creep in.The mood is always a little dark and a little dangerous but there is always a central character that everyone can relate to and because we get to enjoy your work all the time, we can see that it is you, coming through as these lead characters.
Crescent-D, your ability to take Drakxxx's linework and paint it up, give it life and spirit is such a visual pleasure to witness.I love both of your own works too!!!But these collabs are so amazing, together you 2 become an entirely new entity, and we likey that entity. We likey, alot!

um,great job!Der!

Re: Sacrifice

This entry had a bit more back and forth than normal. Sometimes I make an odd edit to Drakxxx's lines. Sometimes I don't do anything to them. I thought I'd show everyone some of the changes that happened along the way as we both sort of tugged a bit and found a middle ground.

Original Drakxxx drawing (100% his idea by the way):

After some feedback in the forums he changed it a bit and sent it to me:

I didn't get around to it until Friday afternoon where I sat down and for some reason, wasn't 100% on board. For whatever reason I was feeling some aggression in my blood so I really wanted to step this guy up. So I kept the top portion and redrew the rest. I went with a more angled shot and moved the pawn onto the proper square.

Drakxxx liked what I did but wanted a wider stance on the knight. He made a few other little tweaks.

I liked the wider stance but went in and blackened it up and whatnot to match what I'd done before. Originally I made his feet closer together so he was in his square. But we decided it didn't matter. He was standing over it so that was good enough. At this point I cleaned up the Queen and King pieces in the background.

Lastly I did the colors with no changes. This was a case where I already knew the colors going in. So I actually spent more time doing line edits than colors.

Hopefully you guys like what resulted from our not-so-typical back and forth process this time.

Thanks as always.

As is the case with every shirt you guys make, WANT WANT WANT WANT. Though it might be even cooler if the pawn was positioned to take the knight, and had a stance that suggested he really thought he could do it.

Like others ,I love the pictures you posted showing your process. You guys are so great together. Crescent Debris, you are amazing. I'm so sorry that I didn't realize that alot of the linework is yours. Now I know, I should have realized it because how can you pick up a piece of artwork and not alter it, it's just confusing to know who does what, but No matter what, whatever you're doing just keep doing it!(incapable of completing a concise statement today!!)

The Guy. Yes. I totally thought that at a quick glance. On the one hand - LOVE it! BIG Disturbed fan, so the reference works for me.
On the other hand, I suspect The Guy creator Todd McFarland might object. Strenuously.

I didn't ask Drakxxx what his inspiration was but I seriously doubt the white eyes and teeth on a shaded face is a reference to "Disturbed". It's just a demon face. It's as general as a pumpkin carving. "Disturbed" has as much claim on being the creators of "evil eyes and teeth on a black face" as they do on being the creators of "rock" or "metal". Both have been around and created by many people long before them or us. That's no disrespect to them, it's just the truth. I understand though. I mean, these days if someone wears black and sunglasses it's "The Matrix", and every coffee shop is "like Starbucks".

Re: Sacrifice

It's really cool to see the steps that have been posted (I'm not replying to the post because of the length) and I have to say that while the shirts you guys post always stun me with just how awesome and incredibly well done they are, with some really stunning little sinister details, they're not usually my cup of tea. If they were posters, I'd paper a wall with them, but as a shirt, I don't usually find them personally wearable. I'm just not usually styled for the kind of twisted details you usually include.

That being said, there's something about this one though, and I can't really be sure what, and I will buy it in a heartbeat if it prints. Perhaps its that chess has been a hobby of mine since I was in third grade, or that I adore the little pawn in this, but I want it, and I would love to finally own one of your shirts that I admire so much.

Funny thing is, I googled McFarlane's Disturbed art, and it made me think of Evil Ernie, a character that debuted in the early '90s.

Drakxxx

quality posts: 16 Private Messages Drakxxx

I can see how this particular face resembles the Disturbed guy, but it wasn't at all the inspiration. As CD mentions, it's something that I've fused with my style over the years, especially for nondescript monster faces. I actually wasn't even aware there was a Disturbed guy until now.

Heres some examples from some of my work to show that the "blank demon eyes and glass shard as teeth" aesthetic is one I use often.

And yeah, Evil Ernie does look like the Disturbed guy. I wonder who would win in a FIGHT.

Thank you guys as always for the terrific support this week.

I dig most of you guys' work, I really do, but not much of it is wearable outside of High School machine shop. This however has the right balance to be wearable in public while maintaining that hint of sinister. I would absolutely buy one.

Like IgnatiusRiley, I think it would have been hilarious if the board positions were such that pawn takes Knight, but no matter.

I certainly hope nobody tattles this into rejection, it doesn't deserve that.

Oh please, tee shirts don't have to be cute or shiny to be wearable in public. Well, maybe for YOU, but that's your choice.

And people tattling on it has nothing to do with it.. I'm sure Woot carefully looks at designs in the fog anyway and are aware of it regardless of user reports.

And as CD and Drak have both pointed out already that kind of face is hardly exclusive to Disturbed and Drak has drawn similar ones into lots of his designs over the years without issue.

I don't wear cute or shiny, but thanks for asking anyway.
I cut my teeth on Epic Illustrated and Heavy Metal and followed the work of LOTS of fantasy artists/illustrators. I can tell you that Fantasy art, even by masters like Frazetta or Valejo has a limited audience and defined demographic of which I am no longer a member.

I'm sure they don't and aren't unless it's blatant. The case mentioned here is obscure enough to not trigger a reaction unsolicited.

I'm not debating the validity of it. I agree it's perfectly fine. I just hope nobody throws a fit over it because I would like to own this shirt.

I'd have to agree with j5's original comment, that while Draxxx's work is always awesome, it is not always something I'd wear on a shirt but would probably use as a wallpaper on my computer. However, this shirt is definitely something I'd consider 'wearable' for me.

Obviously everyone has their own opinions on what is 'wearable'.

You really think that demographic is solely high school shop class? On this site alone you can find hundreds of geeky adults who love this stuff, much less everywhere else.

And I could care less if that sort of design has a limited audience, hell I think I prefer it that way. I wear something because *I* like it, not because I'm hoping everybody else that sees me will. And every rare once in a while when somebody tells me "Hey, awesome shirt, where you get that?" I know we have at least a little bit of similar taste.

I really don't see how asking people not to tattle, or hoping they don't en masse is going to help at all. Woot has no doubt already seen the issue and are going (or not going) to reject it on copywrite grounds regardless of how many people tattle on the forum. You may have a point about it being subtle and not immediately noticed by the rejectionator but all it takes is one person pointing it out.

Woot doesn't reject things I'll bet because people complain or tattle alot, it's based on breaking the rules, risk of getting woot sued, or just good old fashioned random chance and bias. ;)

No I really don't, that was hyperbole. I couldn't find an emoticon for that though.

Considering these are for a derby, hence a popularity contest, I think it matters.
Dailies on the other hand...

Again, I am out of the demographic for fantasy art, but I would absolutely tell you what a cool shirt you have on if I saw you wearing it. ;)
(now if you were sporting a side-placement swirlygig, however...)

I really don't see how asking people not to tattle, or hoping they don't en masse is going to help at all.
It doesn't any more than me shouting at the characters on TV, or complaining at the news, etc. yet I do it anyway.

Now that OdRoc has posted that Evil Ernie pic, I see that The Guy is one of a line of generic fiends. I'm not a comic fan, so I'd never run across Evil Ernie. He's kinds cute though.

I know I'm coming in late with the comment, but I can honestly say the ONLY reason I won't buy this shirt is because of the face. Pretty much every 'knight' themed shirt you two have done I've loved, but that whole demon face thing just doesn't tickle my fancy with this one.
