Re: Gone With The Color

A tribute design to my Grand Parents all time favorite American movie "Gone With The Wind" , the design is based on a comment that my grandad used to say a lot ... "All the magic got lost when color arrived to the movies", so I tried to recreate part of that black and white silver magic into this design and hope you like it, 5 color on slate.

Thanks (o;

This is my favorite shirt in the derby.

In the future, though, you should try submitting earlier. You lose a lot of votes being a few days late. Here's hoping this somehow catches the eye of enough people to catch up!

This looks wonderful in the comp. Do you have a bigger file to share? We love to see the details.
I appreciate the filmstrip brackets. I wish they were a bit less linear, to flow better with the rest of the design's softness.

Re: Gone With The Color

Wow, this is probably my favorite. I really love the film reel graphics on each side of the graphic, without it, it would lack the connection to the derby. I hope this wins, I would like to buy it. :D

I hate to say it, but I'm honestly not sure how well this would print. I have the sense that from any sort of distance, it's simply going to look like a grey shirt that's had an accident with some bleach or white paint. The detail looks lovely on a computer monitor, but I'm unsure how well it will translate into a wearable shirt.

I respectfully disagree. I think the fact that it might seem obscured from a distance just adds to the allure of the shirt. It's unique and I'd consider it very wearable.

Hmm, I didn't think I would be voting for anything in this derby but you proved me wrong! Should've known it was you from the thumbnail.

I also find it funny that my grandpa thought Gone With the Wind was a horrible movie...

Re: Gone With The Color

Pardon me for my ignorance, but how is this on theme? The fact that it has the film strip holes on the side? If you took those away, it would just be a stylized landscape scene.

Oddly for me the film strip edges almost do double duty as the storm shutters of a plantation house...

Love it.

I "wanted one" back when this was at a measly 12 votes... Now look at you! You're in the fog already, despite being so late to enter!

I believe this is a true testament to this shirts appeal.

I really like this design, however the film strips detract from it. If for some reason this doesn't print I think it would do great in a monotone derby minus the film-strips.

It is. But I think this is primarily made up of well-composed stock vectors. Virtually none of it looks hand-drawn. I'm not putting it down - it's a good composition and attractive overall. Just 'splaining that pretty much all of the elements here originated as photos or drawings that became open-source vector art, like this, and this.

naaa, theres not much science involved but a big mess in a super hurry of paint brush , smudge , eraser , bluring, gradients, and lots of halftoning and distress process to try to create a good overall looking composition thats all, here the link for a larger view so you can see how bad my birds look compared to the vectors you said i used, if i were used vectors it would look way better but a trick here for me was to create in a very fast way a nice overall look instead of detailed individual elements.

Except the film strips are the only thing keeping this entry *remotely* on-theme. Without them, it's just another painfully generic Woot tee with swirls & birds.

While the image would work well enough as, say, a desktop wallpaper, I just can't see this as a wearable shirt. Clearly though, I seem to be in the minority.

Re: Gone With The Color

Here's my thing: You say that your granddad said that all the magic went out of the movies when color arrived. You also say that your granddad's favorite American film was Gone With The Wind. GWTW was in color.

My other thing is that the world is in color. Black and white films weren't black and white (mostly) because it was artistic. Black and white films were in black and white because it was available and then because it was affordable.
Embrace the color. (in movies, that is, not always in shirts, although if every shirt were grayscale, what a boring world it would be.)

Of course, none of this has anything to do with the actual design, which I like --- except for the film strips on either side. And if your inspiration had been Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds, that would have been great. (Of course, IMDB says The Birds was also in color.) As it is, the shirt is off-title.

Ooo, snap. I didn't tattle, honest. It takes something pretty egregious for me to complain. Sorry, this probably would have placed in the final three.

No offense but I do hope that woot looks at his work more closely from now on. In my opinion, they often look like traced vectors or photos.
