O-sensei, the “Great Teacher”

Ueshiba Morihei, or O-sensei as he was called, was as wise as an Owl and strong as an Ox. Guarding his power was his Obi. O-sensei practiced Daito Ryu and founded the way of harmonizing with force and energy called Aikido, in 1942. He was a Master of the Jo staff.

O-sensei was a self educated farmer, a simple man, who wrote poetry, calligraphy, and he was an O-moto Ryu Priest but could crush your wrist bones in his bare hand.

Legend tells that O-sensei could stumble a man at 30 paces with his Ki-ai! Being the only survivor from an ambush, while escorting a diplomatic entourage in Manchuria, it is said he could dodge bullets! Standing in the middle of crossfire, he could feel the aim of his attacker’s guns and would anticipate their “line” of fire. Not a single bullet touched him!

It is perceived that this is who George Lucas modeled Obi-wan Kenobi from when he created the Jedi, in Star Wars, after seeing footage of the awesome, mysterious power of O-Sensei from 1942.

I went with 6 colors on Black. This was the most difficult design I have ver created!The smallest halftone dot is 35 lpi and the smallest halftone line 30 lpi. I did some crosshatching to blend the colors.

I almost put a Black Obi on it but that’s like asking someone to wear a Black Obi when they haven’t earned one. So, I kept it simple and it only took 32 hours.


I love this design and want it to print so I can wear it!

O-sensei signed his poetry and calligraphy with a zen circle called an Enzo, that looks like an "O." His brushwork was as mighty as his sword.

Inside the Enzo, representing the Moon, is the Ural Owl from Japan. By his side, the Oxen is a symbol for strength, hard work, and reliability, in Asian culture.

I did O-sensei confronting the Ox with his Jo staff in the old "Ukiyo-e" style. Ukiyo-e means "Floating World" and is meant to envoke a dream-like feeling. I originally was going to do the whole design in this style, but I really liked the way the portrait turned out and wanted to add a modern presentation.

It's really difficult to do a color portrait in 7 layers and "erasing" for the black. The entire design took 79 layers and 32 hours. I think next time I will try a "Minimalistic" aproach.

No fun was had during the making of this design, this was ALLLLL work (Garrrrrh), but I love how it turned out. I'm happy with it.

I knew when I entered this, that it would be most wooter's cuppa tea, but I did this one for "me & mine's." The dogs I run with would buy 3, wear one for 3 days then change into a new one and still have one for the weekend.

This is so Awesome. I love the Artistic rendering of everything you put into this piece. The only thing I did not care for was the Owl he just bothers me.

Very well executed overall. I was waiting to see what you would submit and I was not disappointed.

Man that is a crazy amount of time you put into this. But the extra effort shows.

Yeah, this is the last time I'm gonna put that kinda time into a woot. Wooters just want simple and cute. You have right idae, I'm going more that direction.

I'll probably redo it and ad "Aikido" in Kanji and remove the owl. In fact I was goin to resub without it, still might?

No, I was talking about marketing this to serious Martial Artists, specifically Aikido. There is a serious lack of cool Tshirts in Aikido. Niche Marketing.

I am doing a simpler version to resub....
