i actually voted for this on purpose
I think that since Hipsters tout the whole "irony" thing, it would have been clever if he had a clothes iron on his belly.
Re: Couldn't Care Less Bear
I'd say something really hipster, but I'm over it. Besides, you really only want to know that I'd buy this shirt. And buy it I would.
Re: Couldn't Care Less Bear
Nice take. The care-less bear:-) GMV
Re: Couldn't Care Less Bear
I actually laughed at this. Well done. GMV.
Re: Couldn't Care Less Bear
Ok, this is pretty damn funny. Well done (and I hope it's sufficiently parody to avoid the Rejectionator).
Re: Couldn't Care Less Bear
Ah come on, somebody give him a quarter, the poor blind bear. Lol!

I can't un-see this. I really like the idea, but I wish the glasses weren't sunglasses.
Re: Couldn't Care Less Bear
Surprised no one has yet brought up Travis's comment from the pre-derby thread:
"Lets keep it real animals just to keep things neat and tidy."
This one seems to be stretching the rule to breaking point, imho.

It's a bear with a drawing of a sun on his belly- not sure when bears became mythical creatures.
Anyway- thanks all for the kind words
Glad people are getting a kick out of it.

While I don't like the design, I think Travis's comment is being used out of context here. He was responding to a question regarding mythical animals like dragons. Bears are real, even the stuffed kind that aren't living.
Re: Couldn't Care Less Bear
AWESOME. Instabuy if it wins. GMV

Bears are real. Care Bears are fictional characters. Apologies if I misconstrued the intent of the rule; it was not intentional.

That's okay, sure woot misconstrues the rules all the time, depending on how it suits them!

Who said anything about care bears? He's obviously way too cool to care.

The resemblance is pretty uncanny. Surely you can see how I could so easily mistake one for the other. ;)
endangeredomega wrote:Bears are real. Care Bears are fictional characters. Apologies if I misconstrued the intent of the rule; it was not intentional.
Woot misconstrues their own rules on a fairly regular basis, so I wouldn't worry about it. For all I know, I am the one who is misconstruing.

I can't unsee this either (no pun intended). And I actually liked this.

My fav so far!
Re: Couldn't Care Less Bear
Spare a dollar for a poor, blind, down on his luck Care Bear?
Ramyb, i love all your designs! This 1 and the tutle are awesome!
Although i don't get why so many ppl are always hating on you??!!??
Hopefully no rejections this week!
bluetuba wrote:Spare a dollar for a poor, blind, down on his luck Care Bear?
I agree that the bear looks more blind than uncaring...besides, sunglasses serve a useful purpose. Hipsters seem to wear glasses they don't actually need. The idea and general execution, however, are hilarious.

Hi you know I had the very same question last week, fortunately some of the other kind voters on here, (no thanks to woot of course), pointed me in the right direction, the links of which I will provide below (and also PM you lest they get deleted). Needless to say I liked his designs, but for now I can't with clean conscience vote for them...

I think anyone new here should really try to educate themselves on the history as they may be quite surprised by what they learn. I was, and it makes me reconsider my vote.
(Sorry if I'm regurgitating stuff for some of the more established vets here, but somebody helped me last week with my query and I feel I should help other newbies in return. Thanks to those who offered that help as well, you know who you are ;O)
Re: Couldn't Care Less Bear
The concept is good, but honestly the way you've dressed the bear doesn't read "hipster" to me.
ElanorRigby wrote:...besides, sunglasses serve a useful purpose.
Not on a gloomy day they don't :P All the hipsters I know love wearing sunglasses, as long as they aren't out in the sun.
Hey Ramy,
I usually like the way you render stuff and your color choices are generally great but I often get disappointed by the line work... look at his feet for instance. It's an easy fix and I'd probably vote for this if you re-subbed it but as is it's really jarring (and the tiny nub thumb holding the cup doesn't work great either.)
Plus if you take out the sunglasses and just leave the frames that will silence the issue of hipster enough or not.
I draw a lot of mock carebears so this definitely speaks to me, I just wish you'd pushed the apathy a bit more.

It's interesting how a design can look nice and cute, then you read something like this and it ruins it. :D I didn't even notice the foot, now that's all I see.
I'll vote for this if re-subbed with glasses lens instead of sunglasses
werdwerdus wrote:I'll vote for this if re-subbed with glasses lens instead of sunglasses
Definitely needs something to make it more hipster and less (as others have pointed out) "blind, down on his luck Carebear looking for spare change."
[quote postid="4638378" user="lilygrapetree"]I think anyone new here should really try to educate themselves on the history as they may be quite surprised by what they learn. I was, and it makes me reconsider my vote.
It's a bit hard for "newbies" to "educate themselves" unless they ask the question first...
Thanks for the link ppl, interesting read, i think everyone's work is always going to look like someone else's in some form or another, but obviously direct copying is immoral and unjust.
Still like the 2 designs.

Has there really ever been a resubbed shirt that got made? The vote counts reset for a resub and people who don't realize it got rejected may not vote for it again. The shirt's great and is already in the fog; trying to change the shirt now is just a guarantee to have it out-voted. Changing things for a few picky t-shirt designers (who are all starting to sound more and more like never-satisfied hipsters) to get a few extra votes is just ridiculous.
thedcontinuum wrote: Has there really ever been a resubbed shirt that got made?
Yes, there has. In Derby #35, Spring Pockets of Springwas submitted three times and did print. There may be others as well, don't remember.
Re: Couldn't Care Less Bear
Well, I've never laughed out loud at a ramy shirt before. Too bad this isn't as funny without the title, or I might even vote for it.
I know girls who have nicknamed me CB (care-bear) who will love me for wearing this tee.
I think there is just enough "hipster" to cancel out the "carebear" to make it OK to wear in public!
thedcontinuum wrote:Has there really ever been a resubbed shirt that got made? The vote counts reset for a resub and people who don't realize it got rejected may not vote for it again. There have been several resubbed shirts that have made the climb back to being printed and Ramyb has done it once or twice himself. He resubbed the Popcorn Chicken shirt from the visual Pun derby and that one managed to get 3rd place but it was close. I think 4 votes separated it from 4th place.
So it's something every artists has to weight carefully. Sometimes it's worth the risk and sometimes it's better to leave a small issue alone. There will always be something that could be corrected in every design. Even ones that seem technically perfect can have other flaws that are just as hard to overlook, the one I hate personally is being stiff and lifeless. I'd rather a flawed piece with movement and life then a stiff dead looking image that's mostly without flaws... Though that's just what I like personally.
Cough, long story short, yes resubs can make it to print, but it's generally a long shot and usually it's better not to resubmit when you're in the fog.
Re: Couldn't Care Less Bear
Wow Ramyb!!! This is the first shirt you've made that i actually like.
Re: Couldn't Care Less Bear
Why does he have whiskers (freckles?) on only one side of his nose?
Even with that, it's still pretty good. I especially like the scarf ![]()

Correct me if I'm wrong, since I'm somewhat of a newbie around here, but wasn't tjost's The Binge (one of the bestsellers here) a resub?
Does anyone else feel like this might be treading on copyright infringement territory?

Looking at the replies, I would have to agree about the feet and the too-small thumb. But dangit if I wouldn't buy this shirt!

I second the comment about the feet and glasses. I was considering voting for this, then I saw the foot, then it struck me how much this reminds me of old Mad magazine cartoons with a blind guy selling pencils. He needs glasses, not shades.
Close, but no cigar Ramyb. *golf clap*

I'm not a big fan of the feet either, but to be fair, that thumb is right on. All you have to do is a google image search for care bear and you can see that they are almost always drawn with tiny nub thumbs.
lilygrapetree wrote:http://shirt.woot.com/Forums/ViewPost.aspx?PostID=4045275&PageIndex=3&ReplyCount=247
I agree plagiarism is bad but it's not something you should blacklist a person forever for. All the question is asking is whether you would buy the shirt or not and not whether you believe that the designer is a morally just individual. Also unless you only buy from organic and fair trade stores I'm sure you've bought things from people who have done far worse than plagiarizing.
Re: You do realize that this is Funshine Bear and not Care Bear, right?Couldn't Care Less Bear
smblion wrote:parody is immune
Parody (and satire) is covered under the "fair use" for copyright. Sometimes a court decides the parody isn't strong enough to distinguish itself from the original. I think perhaps Woot is trying to avoid litigation.
Fair use is generally a gray area that can be decided either way.
ginmartinistirred wrote:Am I the only one who thinks it looks as if he has a hangover?
LOL - that's the look exactly!
Re: Couldn't Care Less Bear
After reading several comments about the bear's feet looking crappy I looked at the design again and now I cannot un-see those feet. They are so disproportionate and uneven with each other. It kinda ruins the whole thing for me, cuz now my eyes will go straight to the feet whenever i look at the shirt.

I agree... I think this is another of your designs that could have been brilliant but is just so-so because of the lackluster execution. Facial expression, anatomy, little details... the concept is hilarious, but because of the weak execution it looses a lot of its impact. It kind of reminds me of "At the Dog Park" - that was such an amazing concept and if you'd been able to capture the personality of the cartoon dogs it would have easily won. You are really good, Ramy, but the art? Not so much. The leg on Red Revenge, the arm on Substitute Teacher - surely you know someone who could "proof-read" your stuff before you submit? Or someone who would be willing to add finishing touches to your stuff for the honor of being named as your colaborator and a small piece of the action?
I don't think "Couldn't Care Less" is very hipster . . . a hipster would be more "Completely Obsessed About Something That I Couldn't Care Less About" like riding fixed gear bicycles or some band no one's ever heard because they've only played at that bar that no one's ever been to.
This is more like an average apathetic teenager.

So basically this is a Care Bear version of his target demographic. Gotcha.

Any chance we could get a derby focused on the blind. That would be a great angle for a number reasons.
spazzysoph wrote:Reminds me of that episode of Adventure Time when those party bears were in the Monsters tummy
All the chatter about how this bear looks blind makes me wonder if Woot! would be willing to do a derby around blind characters. I would love for that to happen.

That's the only fair and just thing to do. I better start working on my braille themed designs.

Tee Heee. I was watching some actual 'vintage' Care sequel with my girls the other day, so this design gives me grins.
Love it!
DivineAna wrote:The concept is good, but honestly the way you've dressed the bear doesn't read "hipster" to me.
Agreed. It's a cute design, but my first thought was he was a blind care bear asking for change, not that he was a hipster bear.
This makes me think hipster care bear:

Apparently I could indeed care less.
