The rainbow serpent of aboriginal myths is unleashed by a modern day mining operation. Mining is a large industry in Australia, and I found it interesting (in a tragic sort of way) that aboriginal mythology is deeply rooted in geography.

I was going to call it "one last look at the sun" (the sun being the rainbow serpent's foil), but my wife said that title was super sad and also that I was a depressing jerkface. So uhhh instead I'll call it "to the sun" because, you know, maybe the snake comes back and he and the miners have tea parties forever.

The colors have so much "pop" to it that it's hard to believe you're only using 4.

Not only probably the best artwork in this derby, but one of the few (only?) shirts that made a serious attempt to address the artistic and political history of Australia.

When studying the Dreaming, I similarly felt a sense of tragedy upon learning that the geography European immigrants seem so intent on selling to the highest bidder is considered a literal avatar of the spirituality of the Aboriginal Australians.

Good to see more shirts making an adult statement.

This is an absolutely stunning shirt, and a definite buy if it wins. That being said, I wish the machinery were a little more prominent. I feel like the environmental warning/message inherent in the shirt will get lost because people will just see a pretty design.

@J5 - Haha. Always glad to hear that kind of reaction...

Doing the derbies and wiring myself to produce at least one new design a week really helped me get back into illustrating. That isn't to say that I don't sub work elsewhere (with a half dozen unaccepted daily subs thrown into the mix), but I tend to work better with a little guidance and a deadline. Getting as much stuff out as I can and hearing as much feedback on said stuffs is probably the best strategy for me for at least a while longer :P

@rowanmikaio - I added the lines of color in the machinery pretty late in the process to increase its presence. Now that you mention it, though, I wish I'd thought to experiment with it a bit more. Thickening the lines a bit would have probably helped, though I remember having to also worry about the lines blending into the surrounding halftones too much...

I often skim the derby, but rarely vote. This, though... this I would be ashamed not to vote for. I would buy it in a heartbeat.

This needs to print, for shirt reasons, for aboriginal reasons, for environmental reasons... A well-reasoned shirt!

This is difference between "drawing" and "graphic design"

A design that was MADE for a shirt, not just PUT ON a shirt. Effective and PLANNED use of negative space, and a complex usage of limited colors with halftones.

This submission reminds me of some of those great designs from 50-100 derbies past. Well done indeed.

Honestly, it's not really my style, but you get my vote anyhow for having one of the most amazing designs I've ever seen in a derby. I'll mirror a sentiment from above - it's amazing this is only four colors. Your use of negative space is fantastic. If this was a print, I'd probably buy it. Regardless of my personal taste in tees, you have a great style and I hope to see (a lot) more of your designs in the derby down the road.

This is the only shirt I voted for that made it to the fog... I hope it prints!!

I'm quite disappointed this didn't print. Cute koalas are great, but this shirt would have been amazing.

Well, its pretty obvious the majority of derby voters have no true artistic appreciation, or aptitude for that matter.

I'm remembering why I don't usually even bother to participate in the Derbies. It leaves me feeling like I've walked in on a group of lobotomized manchildren watching re-runs of "Friends."
