Re: The Birthplace of Inspiration

As a neuroscience nerd, the brain is the first place my mind went (no pun intended, or something like that) when I saw the theme. This design is supposed to represent the place where an idea hits, and the synapses that fire off as a chain reaction from that point to create an idea. The biggest motivator for me is having a stroke of inspiration to create something, and so that's what I wanted to represent here. Hope you enjoy the outcome

Ahhh, extremely pretty. I really like how you used neuron structures to tie the abstract sense of imagination to a literal thing.

Very creative work. :^)

One of the best shirts I've seen from you to date. Love the use of neurons(exactly as Spiritgreen put it) and the birds/fish. Well done and keep up the good work.

While it's a lovely shirt, I think there's a difference between inspiration and actual motivation...

While I definitely agree with you that they are not synonymous, inspiration IS the motivation for me. As an artist, if I don't have any ideas, I laze around and don't feel like doing anything, but when the inspiration strikes, I want nothing more than to bring my vision to life. That's what I wanted to represent here.

Thanks for the kind words guys, I put a lot of thought into the design to represent my idea visually, and I'm glad you like how it turned out

Inspiration does not necessarily lead to motivation. Simply saying so does not make this fit the theme.

Actually, by definition, it does:

"inspiration: The process of being mentally stimulated to do or feel something"

I'm not sure how much more of a connection could possibly exist. Your argument could apply to bacon, or coffee, or being chased by a dinosaur, since all of those things don't NECESSARILY lead to motivation, but inspiration absolutely DOES lead to motivation.

Your design does not SHOW motivation. I've only read that inspiration motivates you- but where is the actual motivation in this design?

What is shown in the design is my inspiration at the center, and then a series of synapses branching out from there that are firing. Ultimately, this is exactly what motivation is at the most fundamental level: a series of reactions in the brain between individual neurons that form a network. This is what's represented in the design. I took a different approach to the theme than running to lose weight, but that doesn't mean it isn't equally legitimate.

I'm not going to quibble over the 'fitness' of this sub; I'll leave it to the rejectionator to make the call. I just wanted to comment on just how much I love the thought behind this SO much more than your toony, chibi designs. Of course, today's front page pretty much points out how much my opinion counts. Good one, ramyb, nice to see a different theme from you once in a while.

Putting aside the whole on-theme versus off-theme argument for a second, I will say this much: Those are some tasty, tasty colors.

The theme was pretty darn vague and open:

Give us your take on motivation: what it takes to work it up, what you're motivated to accomplish in the new year, or what to do when faced with a complete lack of motivation entirely.

It doesn't narrow the theme to SHOWing motivation. Plus if you think this one is off theme, you've gotta lotta typing to do to hit up the other shirts that are pretty loosy goosy with the theme.

Great design! GMV and multiple buys if it places

ok people calm down, you're only arguing if it's on topic because of WHO designed it. If this was from someone else, you all would love it.

It's always nice to see actual art from you. Wish you would do it more often, but I guess here at woot, it really doesn't pay the bills.

Spot on for my kind of thinking as well. Abstract, but fitting. While not obvious, easily explained. Motivation is different for different folks. Inspiration too.

Cool design. Good luck. I'm motivated to finish mine.. lol.

I really dig this shirt, but I do wish it was a bigger design. I'm probably in the minority, however, as I'm a sucker for huge prints.

Is this on dark blue or black? I can't really tell. I do love the design, but not in the market for another black shirt however. I would totally vote it up if it were on blue.

Also on a secondary note I was just thinking the other day that it was a shame you hadn't made any shirts like your pale moon raining shirt from a year ago. I guess my wish was granted!

3+ years of too many turbunguins, not to mention past associations, can skew some folks to be more critical of the designs.

I'm seeing the change, and that also means putting the past behind. When the quality and details are there, the votes are warranted.

I hate black shirts, wearing them make me feel like a high school loner for some reason i dont know why. However, I do like this design.

Whether its on topic or not is kinda up in the air. The topic is pretty vague and there are plenty of submissions that are kinda topic loose. I'm normally don't hesitate to bash a Ramyb design when I think its off topic or completely unoriginal, but this one is definitely one of his better design. IMO i actually like it, or wood if it didnt have to be on a dark shirt like black.

Glad I'm not the only one, kinda getting sick of all the black/brown/gray shirts that are the only ones that win on here. And it IS just a great design too, but yeah...no like the black.

Okay...so this oft used "RAMYB is not on topic" looks like it lost steam. Maybe you should count the number of colors and claim he used 8. Maybe 2012 will bring less of this nonsense.

I'm glad it's on black, I hate blue. I can see this on theme, there are a handful of other shirts in the derby right now that I can't see the motivation even after the explanation, so this design is fine in my book.

I hope it wins, it would be my first buy of the year!

It's really easy to bash your tees sometimes, R., but this design is very likeable and detailed.

Maybe I'll convince my friend who sometimes has the kindness to buy me Woot shirts (no delivery in my area) to get one.

I'm with the people that wish this wasn't on a black shirt (I'm trying to add a lot of color to my wardrobe and ditch what black shirts I do have)...but I think this design *needed* a black backdrop. blue would have killed its effectiveness.

otherwise, I really love this design. I love the flow, I love the colors used in the design (that's not a remark on the color of the shirt), and I love the concept (and I think the concept is more than suitable for the theme.)

Re: The Birthplace of Inspiration

I don't normally comment on...well...anything, ever. I'm a lurker, not a poster. However I felt the need to comment now.

This shirt is amazing! I must admit I was incredibly surprised when I saw the name of the artist after gawking at the shirt design for five minutes. That is not to say there is anything wrong with your other designs, I am just used to seeing very cutesy work (which I do usually enjoy as well).

I am an amateur artist and I have been trying to work on a piece similar to this, but am constantly unhappy with the result. I understand this shirt is how inspiration motivates YOU, however you hit the nail on the head for ME as well. The colors, the neuron structures, the birds, the fish, the design as a whole.

All I can say is WOW! You definitely have my vote. I will be very disappointed if I am unable to purchase multiple of these.

Great work, Ramyb!

Well done. Whenever you do designs that are more attune to this style (which happens more often than people seem to usually acknowledge), they are my favorites of yours... even though I generally like the "cute" ones too.

This shirt is absolutely fantastic as far as I'm concerned. I was supposed to not purchase any woot shirts for the month of January - I don't see that happening now. Excellent job.
