Re: deep sea reader
It's an angler fish!
Apparently there was a derby entry a lot like this 3 years ago, so I'm not sure if that automatically marks this for rejection.

Having seen both I wouldn't think so. Similar idea, but quite a difference in the execution.
I like this.
Re: deep sea reader
I love how contented and cozy he looks :3
Re: deep sea reader
Not sure if I like how saturated the purple is, but the cartooning's excellent.
Re: deep sea reader
I love this so much! ![]()
Re: deep sea reader
Thoughtful, expertly done.
Re: deep sea reader
I really love the drawing! For some reason, the rectangle in the background is a little visually jarring to me, I think an oval or a more ambiguous organic shape might have worked better, to simulate the feeling of being under water.
Otherwise, I love the concept and the cartooning, your line art is very solid. Got my vote!
Re: deep sea reader
Love this. Will pick a few up for the writers in the family. ![]()
Re: deep sea reader
The style on this one reminds me a little of Mercer Mayer! (That's a good thing.)
Re: deep sea reader
I have pictures of my pencils and inks for this on my instagram account, but I'm new to that site so I'm not sure how to link to them.

I have to agree with this. I love angler fish, and I love this drawing and concept SO much, but the rectangle just sticks out like a sore thumb to me. Even if the edges just faded into the shirt more or something, but as it is, the edges seem very harsh to me, almost like he's in a box. If this places, I'd probably still buy it, just because it's just a fantastic idea, but if another version were to be submitted without the rectangle, I would love it even more.
Re: deep sea reader
What a great design. I would love to wear this.

Thank you for the feedback, I always appreciate thoughtful responses!
I think it would be worth playing with further (though I'm not so staunchly anti-rectangle) but we just welcomed a new baby into the world, and I'm currently wrapped around her finger.

I posted the pencils and the inks on flickr. You can click on these to make them bigger.

Re: deep sea reader
I adore your illustration of the anglerfish, and I'd definitely buy a print.
Unfortunately, I must agree with previous comments about his rectangular prison. I'd prefer this on a black tee and sans rectangle.

That there is a female angler fish. The males are super tiny, don't have a lure light and certainly don't have gaping jaws and razor sharp fangs.

I am so glad I didn't draw a mustache!

Congratulations on the new Apelet! January babies rule the galaxy. Obviously you have already been assimilated.

Thank you! Apelet would have been a great name, but we went with Elsa.

Thanks! There's a photo of her on my Flickr. I'd post it here, but it already feels like I'm pandering.
By the way: SHE'S ADORABLE!

Congrats! What a wonderful start to the new year for you guys!
And darn you, I was working on an angler for a daily sub... ![]()

... and I had an Ackbar idea I was working on. I guess that's what the back burner is for.
Though it would be nice to see anglerfish competing for turtle dominance.
Re: deep sea reader
really cool design...
Re: deep sea reader
I've been looking at this design all week, but just now got an Incredible Mr. Limpet [my first movie ever] vibe from it - damn I'm old!
