Re: I planned something fancier - but,

Meh is heather gray, like the mood.

I know that tons of you are going to want this t-shirt, but why vote? I mean life's too short, what's the point. Meh.

I'm setting my goals reasonably low, like, I'll try to get it in the derby... oh, wait, I succeeded. Meh.

Wow, I have three entries. Both Meh and Nom are in the dictionary. Fail, on the other hand, I couldn't find.

some points and pointers:
1. heather gray is not a color offered by woot, but this looks like silver anyway.
2. It's a bit off topic, since it's not composed of artistic elements, just drawn out.
3. Maybe update your signature to include links to your entries. This way people can click and see/vote.

Cheers!

I have a shirt catalog, y'all!

Hey, it's my buddy critic, j5!

I really value your opinion and appreciate your taking the time to give it.

To address your points:

I pulled the heather off a Woot-posted template from the artists' resources so I'm a little confused, but silver would be just fine.

[Woops, I followed that useful thread down to the bottom, and found this -- maybe we can get the staff to edit at the top so no other junior wannabes like me make this same mistake. Seems that they used heather gray in 2008, but times change.]

grisca wrote:Remember that there was a change in the available official t-shirt-colours (off the top of my head: no heather grey and orange any more, and silver and slate instead).

Okay, Silver it is! Not that it will be printed, so meh!

Your second point was that it was off topic since it was just drawn out ...I guess I don't understand the rules, [And here I thought other people weren't following them.] or I'm doing a poor job communicating my idea through the picture, or both. The illustration is supposed to show an incomplete stencil of sorts that the word "meh" would have been in, but the painters didn't give a flip so they just freehanded it.

If this is off topic, then all three ideas are, unfortunately. But despite that, I am learning from the experience and the critiques.

Finally, I would like to figure out how to get the Sig line right, but when I just put a link to the thumbnail, it folds and needs to be scrolled, which led to a staffer pm'ing me and asking me to fix it. So I just went in, combined the three thumbnails and sized them down, but they are stored together, which means I can't link up to them individually.

If you feel like critiquing my other two [and I would so appreciate that because I'm not here to win, I'm here to learn -- getting a hundred votes is my next high water mark], here are links to my other two t-shirt designs in this derby:
• Nom, the Abridged Version
  • T-shirt Fail, an epic Fall
  • I planned something fancier, but 'Meh'

Thanks bunches, and remember I like constructive criticism -- I'll just keep constructing it the same way if no one tells me what isn't working and what is. Muchas gracias!

Critique aside I would wear this once a week until it disintegrated.

Although my skill and technique may grow from the critiques, my spirit is lifted by the generous compliments and occasional votes...

oh, wait... I've blown my cultivated perception of apathy ...

    give me sec...

    meh.

I see. From that perspective, it's only marginally off topic, or rather, it's a bit meta-topic, since the letters are the art vs composed of some artistic elements. I'll buy that (not literally).

I see ... I think the secret lies in the (img=100×100) that you slipped in there.

thanks so much! Now I can advertise!

um, good point about the meta-theming. You know, now that I contemplate, I do have a tendency to slip into meta-everything. I'll have to watch myself.

I do appreciate your input, and look forward to more. Any helpful, tidbits on my other two entries? I guess "Fail" qualifies as another "meta-theme" entry. "Nom" was made of cookies, comprised of tiny hand-drawn (not from clip art) chocolate chips! I even resisted the urge to draw ten different chips and then composite them.

I saw your hammock -- I was forced to gamble on Google and learned more than I expected too. Not the t-shirt for me, but often off-color, inside jokes can be very desirable. I suspect you could get a friend to spit his drink if you showed up at a strip club wearing that shirt!

Oh, and nice bananas -- your details were really nice. I know you were half joking, but you executed it well. Nice spacing, good color, spots on the bananas that add the shirt color in to your illustration. I'm sure you're comfortable with your work, and do not really need me to tell you anything, but there's my two cents.

an attempt at quid pro quo. Maybe sometime I can get you to look at my revised Pirate Games for feedback. I would really value your critique, and I think it would help me improve further. Although, ironically, my first entry Feline Orobuoros in the cat!cat!cats! derby is still my most votes (55) to date.

However, I was closer on that one to fulfilling the rules set forth in the j5 (by accident, of course):
to the crit, if I had to do a J5 five, it would probably go like this:
    1. clean lines
    2. simple design
    3. pop culture (or popular theme, if pop-cult is barred)
    4. whimsicle geekery [sic]
    5. animals
I continue to benefit from the time you spend giving me feedback ... Thanks, again.

You're too kind, and I may not be the one to give you the proper help, since I'm not really a designer.

Honestly, the design was a nudge and a wink and I fully expected rejection if not Friday, then at least by Monday. I guess the editors knew it wasn't printing and didn't mind the humor so let it stand? I dunno. Sorry for your Google results.

Wherever they are originating, I think your insights have been, well, insightful. Very matter-of-fact and actionable. You've been paying attention and have a useful point of view. I respect that, a lot.

I tried explaining to someone once about my junior high school basketball coach: she couldn't shoot a basket hardly to save her life; however, she stood at the free throw line beside every single member of our team and talked them each through a perfect shot.

the gift of guiding others toward a successful outcome is not the same as doing it yourself, but in some ways it can have a greater impact on the world, almost certainly a more diverse impact by playing muse to multiples.

    Keep talking, Bubba!

    edit: whoops, double entry.

However, Tangolite, I believe you are mistaken about the use of color in both Curiosity and Steampunk.

If there is additional color in Steampunk, it's just the yellow glow added behind the t-shirt in the comp. Curiosity, on the other hand appears to have multiple shades of gray due to a masterful use of halftones.

    Cheers.
