Re: Sour Grapes

When this week's theme was announced, I was on vacation, and far away from my computer. I wouldn't be able to actively work on a design, but I could think about what I would do once I got home. While I waited in line for rides, I mentally worked on a flaming Icarus, done in the style of classic automotive flames.

But it was just as well that I wasn't home to submit my design on Friday. When I returned late Friday night, there were already three Icaruses (Icarii?) By the time I finished catching up on my sleep on Saturday, there were an abundance of Zeuses, Medusas, Cerberuses, and cats as Sisyphus and Atlas.

It looked like Greek mythology was well covered, so I decided to look elsewhere for inspiration. One of my favorite books as a child was a collection of Aesop's Fables, hundreds of little stories just waiting to be represented.

I chose the classic fable "The Fox and The Grapes"

"One hot summer's day a Fox was strolling through an orchard till he came to a bunch of Grapes just ripening on a vine which had been trained over a lofty branch. "Just the thing to quench my thirst," quoth he. Drawing back a few paces, he took a run and a jump, and just missed the bunch. Turning around again with a One, Two, Three, he jumped up, but with no greater success. Again and again he tried after the tempting morsel, but at last had to give it up, and walked away with his nose in the air, saying: "I am sure they are sour.
Moral ~ It is easy to despise what you cannot get."

And if I don't win this week, I can always claim I didn't want it anyway.

Hello and welcome to woot! In order to vote in the derby, you need to have made at least one purchase at any main woot site. In order to familiarize yourself with how the derby and shirt.woot in general work, please read the shirt.woot FAQ.

Re: Sour Grapes

There seems to be another fox related Greek tale. One about a fox that cannot be caught and a dog that always catches what he is after.

Spoilers: They're turned to stone and sent up to the stars.

Thank you for that. I don't recall that particular story being in any of the Greek mythology books we had growing up. It was a fun little learning experience looking it up.

I like this. Nice job.

IMO, it might look better a little slimmer and off to the side instead of centered.

Good eye! It was originally planned for off to the side.

I played with different positions for the fox in relation to the grapes. I wanted more distance between the fox and the grapevine, to show how futile his efforts were, But it was also important that his nose be pointing to the grape cluster.

When the positioning finally felt "right" the whole design ended up almost exactly half the width of the template. So when I put it off to the side, it felt too big and off balance.

I tried different positions on the shirt, and it seemed to work really well with the grape cluster right at the breastbone.

Sometimes it doesn't matter what you planned, you gotta do what the art tells you it wants to do.
