Eskimo Deco was a 20th century art and design movement that sought to apply the principles of Art Deco to the conditions of life in the Arctic, particularly among the Eskimo people. The movement reached its zenith of popularity with a full-color cover feature in the May, 1934 issue of Modern Tundra, a magazine that was highly influential in Arctic tastemaker circles despite never actually existing.
Although Art Deco was something of an ephemeral movement, Eskimo Deco was even more short-lived due to the impermanent and perishable nature of characteristic materials, such as ice, snow, muktuk, and dried herring. The brief and abortive movement declined sharply around 1939 when it became clear that public demand could not sustain a market for mansions constructed of walrus blubber.
