On some far away world they tell the story of the water and the sky. The sky looked down and the water looked up. There was no land, there were only stars and fish. And they were reflected between them, and moved in harmonious opposition.
Then came the day the moon rose for the very first time. The water sparkled despite itself, and the sky parted so the moon could pass. The two were no longer alone, and things began to change. The water moved gently and slow, rising and falling, and the sky was sometimes eclipsed in parts. On certain nights the moon was so wide the water and sky could barely see anything else.
Over time the water began to gather in places and there was land. Back, and forth, and back, and forth. The people began to migrate with the water, and their fires made smoke. The smoke began to drift between the water and the sky.
At last the day came when the water would look up and see the moon and the smoke and the sky would look down and see the land and the lights, and the water and sky could no longer see each other. And they wondered, each of them, what became of their sweetest friend. They wondered, and they wished, until their wishes gathered wings and traveled back and forth, uniting them once again.
And that is why there are birds.
