INTERESTING ANIMAL DADS: JACANA EDITION

the jacana is a leggy tropical bird that looks like it’d be a pretty decent shooting guard if it had, you know, human arms and stuff. after the male and female jacanas do their “thing,” the female lays some eggs in his crib and then ditches him to go hook up with other dudes. that’s kinda cold. the male jacana is a dedicated guy, so he protects the unhatched eggs dutifully, even when the baby mama comes back and tries to SMASH HER OWN EGGS which really seems evolutionarily detrimental.

the male jacana is kind of a chump, though, so he’ll just hook up with her again after that goes down. it’s a whole lot of drama. they should make a jacana-based reality show hosted by david attenborough.
