Researchers now estimate that human beings began losing the "formality gene" sometime after the release of "Jailhouse Rock".

While the origins of the trend are uncertain, the earliest known cases appeared among populations of factory workers in Europe, before spreading to the western United States sometime in the mid-19th century. Prevalence was especially high among miners and ranchers.

But it wasn't until the 1950s that this mutation became endemic throughout North America and Europe, spreading to Asia through Japan soon after. Today, approximately 65% of people on Earth are now genetically unable to wear a decent pair of trousers or a tailored skirt. Many workplaces, restaurants, and official settings now make accommodations for this genetic need. A further mutation limits those who carry it to sweatpants, leggings, and other elastic-waisted pants. This mutation is especially common in the United States.
