“Ugh, Robort, not this again. We broke up in 2003.”

“And remember how we talked about the fact that our brief time was special in part because it was brief?”

“Vaguely.”

“And remember how you kind of agreed that our recommencing a relationship would probably render it completely un-special?”

“Okay, yes, I remember this stuff. But here’s what I’d say: We had a really great thing. I know it didn’t last. I know it’s not happening again. But my time with you had such a profound impact on my life that maybe - JUST MAYBE - I want to dust off the memories sometimes and reflect on the huge influence that relationship had on my entire world, even if I know there will never be an US again. Maybe I’ll laugh at the good times. Maybe I’ll design a shirt about it. I don’t see anything wrong with that, do you?”

“So I’m not sure why you need to be all patronizing to me about this stuff.”

“I suppose I don’t.”
