They’ve done studies, you know, to show that kids who doodle during class actually learn better! The theory is that it occupies that part of the brain that might otherwise wander. Or so we used to tell our teachers when they got after us about drawing when we were supposed to be giving them our undivided attention.

It was probably total malarkey. But what in the world is “undivided attention” anyway? Sure, we were capable of stowing our drawing pen and maintaining eye contact through an hour-long physics lecture. But do you think that meant we were concentrating on physics? It didn’t. It meant we were concentrating on maintaining eye contact.

We still doodle, but now it’s in staff meetings. But we don’t do it to help us concentrate. We do it to distract ourselves. Because if we paid any kind of attention to the huge mounds of steaming horse hooey getting shoveled around the conference room during meetings, our involuntarily eye-rolling and sighing would probably get us fired.
