He is dreaming. It is unlike any dream he’s had in some time. There are no dead knights here, no screams of galactic torment or anguish roaring through his mind, no fire. Instead, he’s in a room he doesn’t recognize, a kitchen, where he is preparing breakfast for two small children sitting just behind him.
The first child, the boy, can barely sit still. He is restless, full of energy, and always whining about one thing or another between frantic bites of food. “This jar of Imperial jam is too hard to open all by myself!” “Can we go to the pod races today, PLEASE?” “Hey, Dad, watch this!” The boy lobs a tiny piece of fruit at a large orb of blue milk sitting on the counter. It explodes, soaking his father’s helmet. The boy giggles. There is a bandage on his right hand.
Beside the boy sits a young girl. She has refused to eat anything on her plate all morning. Instead, she just scowls at him, stubborn and rebellious, then whispers something to the thing she has hidden in her hands. For a moment, he thinks he hears a familiar electronic chirping from between her fingers.
Suddenly, he hears the sound of footsteps coming from the other room. The children jump up from the table and into the doorway to greet a woman dressed in pure light. They take her hands and smile up at a face he dares not look into. He hears her whisper his name.
He wakes up screaming.
